Part 4: North American Fall Tour

2006 North American ‘A Bigger Bang’ Fall Tour Overview

The Stones had a two week break before the next leg of the tour. During this time off, Keith filmed a quite marvellous cameo as Jack Sparrow’s dad in the latest movie in the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ franchise before joining his bandmates in Foxborough, Massachusetts for a  9 week, 21-show run of shows in North America. It’s pretty evident from listening to many of these shows that the band were running on fumes and needed a longer break, Keith especially. Presumably for medical reasons, he wasn’t singing and playing guitar at the same time. It was also evident that their promoter Michael Cohl had milked the US market for all it was worth. Some markets were getting their third or fourth visit of the Bigger Bang tour and ticket sales in some places were sluggish to the extent that for the first time they were offering ‘2 for 1’ offers to fill seats.  Thirteen months after selling the venue out, one has to question the logic of booking an ageing band into a half empty Chicago’s Soldier Field in mid-October in temperatures which were more suited to an Arctic expedition than an outdoor concert.  By contrast, for the first time the Stones visited some more remote parts of the Midwest and Canada for the first time, where sales were very good.  Mick’s voice problems again caused some postponements in late October, including one of the two Beacon Theatre shows in New York that were being filmed for Martin Scorsese’s ‘Shine A Light’ movie.  It wasn’t an easy tour for Mick. He flew back to England to visit his dying father, arrived back in Las Vegas to be told that he had passed away and then went on stage a few hours later. What a trooper.

Most of the show at Zilker Park in Austin on 22nd October was included in the official ‘Biggest Bang’ DVD released in June 2007. Whilst it has been subject to some guitar overdubs (by the band’s guitar techs! Tut, tut!) it’s a very good gig and the go-to show from this tour leg. It also includes wonderful one-off covers of songs by a pair of Texas legends – Waylon Jennings’ ‘Bob Wills Is Still The King’ and Buddy Holly’s ‘Learning The Game’ – the latter featuring one of the best lead vocals of Keith’s career.  The boxed set also features a duet with Dave Matthews in Seattle and with Bonnie Raitt in Vancouver.

The ‘Shine A Light’ movie comes from the second Beacon Theatre show on 1st November. Extra songs from this show and the first night were featured on the CD and DVD release. With Scorsese’s track record of making great rock concert movies (see ‘The Last Waltz’) and his excellent use of the Stones’ music in several of his other iconic masterpieces like ‘Mean Streets’, ‘Goodfellas’ and ‘The Departed’, hopes were high when this collaboration was announced. Personally, I found it to be a missed opportunity and in some places incredibly contrived (the decision to fill the front rows with specially hired young women who could barely hide their disinterest plus the ludicrous and mercifully brief sub plot which suggested the show had no setlist). Whilst it must have been great to have been in attendance, the performance was decent but not one of the band’s better nights musically and the guest artists ranged from mediocre (Jack White – to be fair, the song didn’t suit him) to the surprisingly decent (Christina Aguilera) to the utterly magnificent (a show stealing performance by Buddy Guy on ‘Champagne & Reefer’). Significantly, whilst the Stones dusted off some rarities for these shows including ‘Far Away Eyes’ and ‘I’m Free’, neither concert featured a single song from the album that they were touring behind.

Recommended shows - Aside from the official releases - Louisville, Atlantic City and Los Angeles.

Number of shows – 21

Number in circulation – 17.   Missing are Missoula, both Regina and Nampa. All locations that were possibly a little too far out of the way for the tapers! From the first Beacon Theatre show (29th October) only the officially released songs are in circulation. Only about a third of the final concert in Vancouver circulates.

Personnel – Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ron Wood with Darryl Jones (bass), Chuck Leavell (keyboards), Bernard Fowler and Lisa Fischer (backing vocals & percussion),  Blondie Chaplin (backing vocals, percussion & occasional guitar), Bobby Keys (tenor sax) and The New West Horns – Tim Ries (sax , Michael Davis (trombone) and Kent Smith (trumpet).
