2003 European ‘Licks’ tour overview

Early June saw the Stones kick off a 47 date, four-month trek around Europe with theatre, stadium and arena shows in Munich. The ‘small, medium and large’ format would also subsequently be used in Paris, Stockholm, Rotterdam (although the theatre show would be in nearby Utrecht) and London.  The British Isles leg of the tour would also see additional arena shows in London, plus Glasgow, Manchester, and Dublin – the eleven shows there would be their biggest tour on home soil since the 70’s.  In late July, halfway through the tour, the Stones returned to Toronto to play an all-day multi artist S.A.R.S benefit aimed at helping the city recover from the recent pandemic.  With 475,000 people in attendance, this would be the largest ticketed event in history. The full day’s line up was televised with highlights later being released on an official DVD.  It’s a decent enough gig, although it’s probably best remembered for the crowd bottling guest star Justin Timberlake, much to Keith’s visible annoyance. Back in Europe, Mick’s laryngitis flared up again leading to a few shows having to be rescheduled at short notice. After this happened in August, as a precautionary measure, the Stones would never play full length shows on successive nights again.  This was a very strong tour leg with the UK and Ireland arena dates being especially good.   The European tour ended in Zurich in early October, but that wasn’t quite the end of the Licks tour as a few weeks later the Stones finally made it to Hong Kong (having had to cancel shows there in March) to play two dates at the city’s Harbour Festival.

The excellent ‘Four Flicks’ DVD box set, released in late 2003, includes 16 of the 19 songs played at the first Twickenham show, plus 19 of the 22 songs performed at the Olympia Theatre in Paris as well as a couple of numbers from the theatre show in Munich. The ‘Live Licks’ CD also includes several tracks from Twickenham and Olympia. The ‘Toronto Rocks’ DVD features six of the sixteen songs played at the SARS Benefit show. Finally, the 2022 DVD released of ‘Licked Live In NYC’ includes three bonus tracks from the Amsterdam show on 19th August.  There is also a great unofficial pro shot of the Munich theatre show, which is strongly recommended.
