1995 ‘Voodoo Lounge’ European Tour overview

Barely five weeks after flying home from Down Under, the Stones were on the road again with a three-month trek around Europe, beginning and ending in The Netherlands, to round off the Voodoo Lounge tour. Whilst most of the shows took place in stadiums and fields in front of audiences as large as 90,000 spectators, the band also played four intimate indoor shows in clubs and theatres in Amsterdam (two nights), Paris and London which were filmed for a TV documentary special and live album, both of which came out late in the year (with some track differences in each) as ‘Stripped’. It was an exciting release which was influenced by the in-vogue ‘Unplugged’ format that had been successfully employed by MTV and featured several deep cuts and covers which weren’t played at any of the stadium shows. Both the TV special and album included material recorded at EMI Toshiba Studios in Tokyo in March and the album also featured more stripped-down material recorded in a Lisbon studio in late July. Some versions of the ‘Stripped’ album also included interactive content although this format quickly became obsolete. Whilst the TV special was never released on home video or DVD format, in 2016 Eagle Rock released a superb DVD/Blu-ray box set which included an expanded version of the original documentary plus 3 full concerts from the first Amsterdam show, Paris and London. Along with 2003’s ‘Four Flicks’ DVD, it’s probably the most essential video document of the entire second half of the band’s career.

The European tour saw the Stones play outdoor concerts in 16 European countries including, for the first time, Hungary, and Luxembourg (in the case of the latter, their concert in the tiny duchy was attended by an audience which was equal to about 10% of its entire population). The format of the stadium shows were similar to those earlier on the tour, with the Stones usually playing around 23 songs per night. Bob Dylan’s ‘Like a Rolling Stone’ (jokingly introduced each night as ‘a song he wrote for us’) was premiered at the club shows in Amsterdam but remained in the set for the rest of the tour and was released as the lead single from ‘Stripped’. In Montpelier, Dylan was actually the opening act and joined the Stones onstage to perform it. ‘Connection’ also returned to the setlist after a mere 28-year absence and featured occasionally in Keith’s mini-set.
