1973 WINTER TOUR

Western Springs Stadium, Auckland, NZ – 11th February 1973 – Last tour with Nicky Hopkins

Winter Tour 1973 Overview

The Stones spent the final month of 1972 recording tracks for ‘Goats Head Soup’ in Jamaica before breaking for Christmas. Mick Jagger’s plans for a quiet seasonal break with his wife ended on 23rd December when a devastating earthquake struck Bianca’s home city of Managua and the shocked couple flew to the Nicaraguan capital where they managed to find her mother amongst the ruins as well as help distribute typhoid injections and medical supplies to the survivors.  A hastily arranged benefit concert at the Los Angeles Forum was duly set up for January 18th ahead of a ‘winter tour’ which was scheduled to take in shows in Hawaii, Japan, Hong Kong, New Zealand, and Australia.

Unfortunately, the Far East part of the tour had to be cancelled as Jagger’s previous drug conviction resulted in him being denied a visa to enter Japan. Initially the band were also denied work permits to visit Australia (feel free to insert your own ironic joke about Australia and English convicts) although this was rescinded a few days later.  Nevertheless, this resulted in a three-week gap in the tour schedule, part of which the band spent back in Los Angeles working on more recording sessions before flying down under to play ten shows, all of which took place outdoors in the middle of the scorching antipodean summer in a mix of tennis, rugby, cricket and horseracing venues.

The 14 shows performed in January-February find the band still on top form and recordings of all of the shows circulate (most of them complete) in varying quality from poor audience to excellent soundboard recordings.  Whilst the early part of the tour in the US contains the more interesting setlists, the band were probably peaking by the time they hit the home straight in Sydney and (especially) Perth.

Number of shows – 14

Number of shows in circulation - 14

Recommended shows – the soundboard recordings from Perth and both Sydney and the audience recording of the first Honolulu show.

Personnel – Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Mick Taylor, Charlie Watts, and Bill Wyman with Nicky Hopkins (piano), Bobby Keys (sax), Jim Price (trumpet/trombone) and occasionally Ian Stewart (piano)
