Rolling Stones legend Keith Richards and Louisiana legends Deacon John and Carol Fran headline the winners of the 2012 Slim Harpo Music Awards, named in honor of one of Louisiana's most noteworthy blues musicians.
"The awards are given to musicians who expand the awareness of one of Louisiana's most prolific, but under-recognized, artists," said Johnny Palazzotto, creator of the Slim Harpo awards along with surviving members of Slip Harpo's family. "The musicians who are recognized each typify the category in which they are being recognized."
This year's award winners are:
2012 SHMA Legends: J. D. Miller, the renowned producer of many of Slim Harpo's recordings and author of "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels" and Carol Fran, affectionately known as the Queen of Louisiana rhythm and blues.
2012 SHMA Ambassador: Keith Richards, Rolling Stones guitarist and songwriter, who names Slim Harpo's "Blues Hangover" the No. 4 song on his Top 10 list.
2012 Pioneers: New Orleans favorite son, Deacon John Moore, Baton Rouge's harmonica man, Oscar "Harpo" Davis.
Nick Spitzer, the 2009 SHMA Ambassador award winner and host/producer of American Routes on 200 radio stations nationwide will serve as Master of Ceremonies. Offbeat Magazine is the media sponsor of the event.
A special treat for the evening includes red beans and rice soul food from Shirley Neal, matriarch of the Neal blues family from Baton Rouge.
The awards will be presented Monday, April 23, at the Manship Theatre / Shaw Center for the Performing Arts in Baton Rouge. Cocktails begin at 6 p.m., with the awards at 7 p.m., and a blues jam session from 8 - 10 p.m. Tickets are available online through
