NEW YORK -- "Usually I'm working in this room," observed Keith Richards Tuesday night, while holding court downtown at the renowned Electric Lady Studios. "Tonight I guess I'm working the room."
The rock legend and Rolling Stone (pictured here on tour with the Stones in May) was giving remarks at a listening event for Crosseyed Heart, his first solo album in more than two decades, which is due Sept. 18.
Greeting a packed room of several dozen, including colleagues and some media folk, Richards, 71, was all smiles. He asked the crowd to "see what you think," and quipped, "If you like it enough, go out and buy it."
Produced by Richards and longtime collaborator Steve Jordan (also in attendance), the 15 tracks include muscular rockers and a few more delicately bluesy numbers, as well as a wistful cover of the folk standard Goodnight Irene.
Richards' penetrating, groove-driven guitar work is a prominent feature, of course; the various other instruments he plays include electric sitar and Farfisa organ.
Guests on the album include Norah Jones, Aaron and Ivan Neville and the Harlem Gospel Choir.
