Foreign Tongues a new Exile on main street?

After listening to In the Stars and Rough and twisted my reaction was just the same as I got when listening to Exile on main street for the first time. I thought this is not that good as I hoped but after some time listening I found these two songs were growing on me and they hit me direct with a punch in my gut. Same with Exile. So my immediate feeling is that Foreign Tounges can up there with Exile on my top list.

Hope I'm right in my feeling about this new album but it's hard to tell before you have listened to all the songs!

The feeling though is that it will be a really great album!

My god they are in their late 70's and early 80's and delivers this kind of music still!
Gotta hand it to them, they are the greatest rock and roll band. Classic rock and roll will never be the same without them around!

Funny for me it was the exact opposite 😅 I absolutely LOVED Rough and Twisted from the very first note and I really enjoy In the Stars, not as much as Rough and Twisted, but it's a catchy tune that lifts the mood ...meanwhile I still remember when listening to Exile for the first time in its entirety in like 2018 and I was comfused as to why everyone said it's the greatest album of all time...I didn't get it...it only started to grow on me bit by bit while listening to it on my daily walks during the pandemic, only then did I understand its full greatness

Also I'm not sure whether I know Beautiful Delilah, I definitely gotta listen to it, the Chuck Berry vwrsion and the early days Stones cover, it will be very interesting to see how they changed it up now 60 years later Cheesy

I'm most happy that the Boys are making new music.  Time will tell if it's as good as Exile.   I don't think it has to be.

Topping the mighty Exile is a tall order.  We'll just have to sit tight until July and hope for the best.  I'm digging the first two songs anyway.

Just as one cannot compare Picasso's Rose period to his Blue period,
you cannot compare the works of 5+ debaucherous lads in their late 20's to 3 sober  gentlemen in their early 80's.

Wait!! The album hasn't come out yet and you're already comparing it? Did I miss something? Is the album already circulating?

The elephant in the room......I must ask...when was that??

I can honestly say that I only recall hearing albums for the first time for only 2 albums.

@Voo...you'll be happy to know that DISCPLINE was one of those times....(the nite before they played at the pier in 1982...DALE ESO AMIGO!!!!!)

The other time was when I heard the very first note of U2's Achtung Baby and knew I was about to hear greatness.

Anyone else have a good "actual"  first listen story to tell??

Some Girls came out on my 16th birthday, bought it on my way home after my last o'level exam. Smoked something good  and lay on my bed listening to greatness - although my main memory is focusing in on Charles drumming - truly magnificent!!

The Stones are not required to be sober at this age and time.

They are making new music, which is awesome.

Thanks all of you for replies on my post!

Well after being thinking about Foreign Tongues as a possible new "Exile" I now have listened to this new album and it's growing on me just as Exile did way back then!

I didn't really compare the albums when I wrote the post I just did react to the singles that had been released. For me now Foreign Tounges is a great album.

What I reacted negatively to at first is that it's rather too compressed but after listening to it on rather low volume I really enjoy it. So my conclusion is that this is a great album!

You're mentioning an interesting fact here, because I too noticed that when actually turning down certain songs they are much more enjoyablw on the ears 😅 but apart from that, the album is brilliant, I've barely listened to anything else for a whole week now and listened to the whole album at least once every day (today I didn't get a listen so far cause I had to focus at work unfortunately)

I mean, yes, undoubtedly Exile is a masterpiece...and for me #2 behind Let it Bleed on the list of their very best albums, FT isn't better than Exile...but as my #5 it comes pretty close to it...

however I think we as fans also love to ascribe a tad more meaning and nostalgia to certain albums, especially Exile, considering the conditions it was made under, which is fucking iconic in some way but also from a nowadays point of view very insane (regarding the huge amount of heavy drugs consumed or the way Keith and Anita treated Marlon seeing how they were literally both drug addicts)

I must admit Ronnie, I can't rank albums.  Its hard for me to put one above the other.  I got really into the band in 1980. Therefore all their albums before that were new to me and I didnt have the problem of being influenced by the critics who reviewed them at the time.

For example, I love Between the Buttons and TSMR.  I found out later they got panned in the UK by the critics (Sgt Pepper copy being a common theme for Satanic Majesties).

But I thought they were both great. Backstreet Girl is one of my all time favourite Stones songs.  I also think Bill's In Another Land is great along with the other songs on there.

I have therefore been able to use my own ears to judge every album since and all I can say is there are no real duff albums... Just a few that are not to their high standard but are still good nonetheless.

This person here on IG came up with pretty interesting rating criteria! I think it's also very important to take into account how often and much you'd replay the album (which is all the timr atm with FT 😅)

Pretty fun album.

Some very different sounds.  Reminds me of Undercover in that regard -- pushing some boundaries.  Mr. Charm?  Never Want to Lose You?  Even Covered In You.  Different.  Each get in my ear.  That's good Stones.

Others are just very comfortable -- Rough and Twisted, In the Stars, Beautiful Delilah, Back In Your Life

Only a couple I don't like - at least not yet.
Jealous Lover is tough - like Mick's falsetto usually.  But not this time.
Side Effects sounds like a PSA.  Right up with Indian Girl and Blinded By Love as worst idea ever.

Pretty impressive for 2026
