The hypochondriacs at IORR are doing their best to ruin the vibe in the fandom. The longer their Chick Little porn goes on the dumber it gets. Now they’re chattering that it’s good the Stones aren’t coming to the States because … Trump (seriously).
There’s a lot of acreage between doom and cope, but a lot of them haven’t found it yet. Even that widely dispersed Rolling Stone piece was speculative garbage.
We know/accept, from public appearances, generally reliable insiders, and a couple of official comments, only a few things, and only one of them is certain about the future: (1) The Stones were offered a summer stadium tour in Europe and turned it down because it didn’t appeal to Keith. (2) We have it on good information that Mick isn’t interested in residencies, or hasn’t been when offered them in the past. (3) We have seen every member of the band out and about recently, ambulatory and making pop-up performance appearances. (4) We know there is an album on the way.
Summing it up: They’re healthy, they’re still active musically, they have a brand to promote, but they won’t be doing it with a large summer stadium tour in Europe.
There’s no cause for doom. History, including recent history, tells us the band does its own thing on its own schedule and will pop back up with something that will catch us off guard.
The rep’s comment that the band will be back on stage when they’re good and ready sounds like PR noise to me, a neutral statement that means nothing, though it actually sounds oddly defensive in tone. I doubt that’s what the band told him to say, at least not in those words.
They might be back, they might not. Odds are very good (because they love to play, they’re healthy enough to be on stage, and they have something to sell) that they’ll be back in some form or fashion.
But if you skim what’s going on at IORR, you see a perverse human tendency to doom over nothing. Patti must have cancer! Trump’s mean tweets about celebrities ruined the touring market in Europe! Mick had dinner with jet setters at Epstein’s pad, with their clothes on! Keith’s knuckles! Bring back Mick Taylor, call Waddy!
Anything will do, psychologically, except the ambiguity of not being in control of the future. The Stones are fine. Be excited while we still have time. Don’t watch the pot come to a boil.
