Their 15th UK #1 album.  The same number as The Beatles.

Only Robbie Williams has more with 16.

Also forgot to mention it's #1 in the vinyl albums chart as well.

The two vinyl singles from the album are still doing well in the vinyl singles chart.

Rev's going to like the discussion about "You Know I'm No Good" in the current ep of Speaking in Tongues. Mick explains it was his idea to work from the backbeat of Lowell Fulson's Tramp rather than what Winehouse has on her original.

In Germany it's the 12th #1 and the most sold records of any artist in 1.5 years

Also thanks for the reminder of the new podcast episode! I just watched the interview German Rolling Stone conducted with Mick and the interviewer was literally so fucking annoying omg, suffice to say it wasn't yet another great Mick interview, just some random stuff^^

Also maybe I'm dumb but can someone explain to me how this is happening with the trophies? Do the people from the UK and German charts ask all the artists who could potentially make the #1 spot to hold a trophy so they can take a pic of them just in case, so they'll have it  or was this photoshopped 🤣🤣🤣

Because those pics of Mick and Ronnie are from the 8th from the launch party and that pic of Keith I think from when he did the Zane Lowe interview

They were given the award because they knew that, given the pre-sales figures and the lack of other releases that same week, the #1 spot was guaranteed.

They turned out to be right; *Foreign Tongues* sold more than twice as many copies in its first week as the #2 album—as I’ll show in the next post.

From Music Week:

Rolling Stones extend span of No.1 albums to more than 62 years
by Alan Jones
Friday, Jul 17th 2026 at 5:30PM

The Rolling Stones have the opposition licked, as they stroll to a No.1 debut with 25th studio album, Foreign Tongues, as the UK albums chart celebrates its 70th anniversary.

Racking up first week consumption of 38,016 units (20,891 CDs, 12,825 vinyl albums, 471 cassettes, 2,074 digital downloads and 1,755 sales-equivalent streams), Foreign Tongues is the legendary band’s third consecutive No.1 album, albeit on considerably lower consumption than 2016 blues covers set Blue & Lonesome, which was their first new album in more than a decade, and had first week consumption of 105,830 units; and follow-up Hackney Diamonds, which sprinted to a 72,204 opening frame in 2023.

The Stones were also No.1 in September 2020, when the reissued and expanded 1973 album Goats Head Soup topped on sales of 13,107 units.

Already the oldest band to have a No.1 album, and the one with the longest span of chart-toppers, they lengthen their lead in both categories. Comprising lead vocalist Sir Mick Jagger, who will be 83 a week on Sunday (July 26), fellow founder member Keith Richards (82) and ‘new boy’ Ronnie Wood (79), who didn’t join until 1975, they are the first group to have a No.1 album with an average age of more than 80. Paul McCartney – who plays bass on Foreign Tongues track Covered In You – and Tom Jones are the only solo acts to have an album of new material top the chart as octogenarians.

Twelve of Foreign Tongues’ 14 songs are Jagger/Richard originals, two of which were co-written by producer Andrew Watt, and two more by session musician Matt Clifford, who plays keyboards in their tour band. There’s also a cover of 2007 Amy Winehouse hit, You Know I’m No Good, and Beautiful Delilah, a 1958 song by Chuck Berry, whose Carol, from the same year, was on their first album 62 years ago.

Foreign Tongues extends The Rolling Stones’ span of No.1 albums to more than 62 years, and is arguably their 13th No.1 album, following their eponymous debut (1964), The Rolling Stones No.2 (1965), Aftermath (1966), Let It Bleed (1969), Sticky Fingers (1971), Exile On Main Street (1972), Goats Head Soup (1973), Emotional Rescue (1980), Voodoo Lounge (1994), Blue & Lonesome (2016) and Foreign Tongues (2023).

If chart-topping reissues of Exile On Main Street and Goat’s Head Soup are included alongside their similarly high-achieving originals – Exile On Main Street and Goats Head Soup returned to the summit in 2010 and 2020 respectively, with extra content – their tally of No.1s to 15. However, those same sources don’t credit the only group with more No.1 albums – The Beatles – with a 16th chart-topper for the 2017 return to No.1 of their 1967 album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, even though it too had masses of new material in some of its 50th anniversary editions.

To muddy the waters still further, when BMRB became the UK’s first official chart compilers in 1969, the chart was carried by both Record Retailer and Record Mirror – the former being renamed Music Week in 1972, the latter consumer magazine being folded into Music Week in 1991. With earlier deadlines, Music Week initially ran the album chart a week in arrears of Record Mirror. They caught up in October 1969, which meant missing a week’s chart. The missing chart was the one in which supergroup Blind Faith’s eponymous only album was dethroned by The Rolling Stones’ compilation Through The Past Darkly (Big Hits Volume 2). It was published in Record Mirror, but Music Week simply skipped that week and showed positions which were really from two weeks prior as ‘last week’ for continuity purposes.

The only group to have new No.1 albums in six different decades (1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2010s, 2020s), The Rolling Stones have indisputably had 12 No.1 studio albums, the most by any group, surpassing The Beatles’ tally of 11. Ahead of them are solo star Taylor Swift (13). Robbie Williams also has 12 (excluding his Better Man soundtrack, on which multiple other singers take lead, and XXV, which includes re-recordings and re-ocrhestrations).

With The Rolling Stones replacing 67-year-old Madonna’s Confessions II (1-9, 7,758 sales) at the top, we have the oldest pair of consecutive No.1 artists in the chart’s history.

01 38,016 The Rolling Stones - Foreign Tongues [20,891 CDs, 12,825 vinyl, 471 cassettes, 2,074 downloads, 1,755 streaming]

02 16,380 My Chemical Romance - Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys

03 16,350 Olivia Rodrigo - you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love

04 16,090 Michael Jackson - The Essential

How is the streaming calculated, per single stream per person or via IP address?? Because I'm pretty sure that I alone have been listening to the full album at least 25 times so far (some songs probably 35-40 times), so 1755 streams is basically nothing wtf?
Also the 471 cassettes xD

But yeah that about the presale numbers makes sense, thanks for the explanation!

The figure of 1,755 streams equates to 1.7–1.8 million plays for the album and its tracks in the UK; that might seem like a lot, but it is virtually nothing in today's market.

To put it in perspective, the album is #1 on the overall chart and #1 in sales, yet it ranks #93 in streaming—it is even outperformed by *40 Licks*, which had higher streaming numbers and sits at #69.

You are so right about me being happy about "tramp" and more so
about just how many tracks Mick has acknowledged as being "soul"
or "soul influenced" or "starting out as a soul tune"

and of course more than his words, the music/songs on this
fucking album! i had vivid imaginings of what it might sound like,
but this is beyond my dreams -- iorr.org's stalwart Mathijs,
who started out as a severe critic of r&t/stars (too lacking in Keith),
has come around so thoroughly that he now calls Foreign Tongues
the birth of a new stones era, equivalent to Beggars Banquet or
Some Girls...

God I hope so. And with Keith making the point over and over
again about how he's thrilled "the band's rhythm section, Darryl
and Steve" are finally on record, and with all due respect to Mick's
desire to perform and all the fans who want shows, if the Stones'
next move turns out to be going back into the studio with the same
attitude and approach, fine by me...

ALSO
...

AI says that the Stones will earn upwards of half a million $US
from this concert event. (optimistically approaching low millions if
merch performs well and includes strong physical crossover, plus
major promo value. Exact figures aren't public, and Roblox/artist
splits aren't disclosed. This could rise with ongoing item sales post event)

Millions of people playing this... I know I'm old, but I've hated video
games all my life. Seems like Psychosis on Main Street to me.*

* but lol as soon as the event started playing "mr charm"
and "in the stars", instantly i became less judgmental

What about the US album charts? I didn't see anything about this yet Oo also streaming really is a world of its own it seems, totally weird to me that people would rather listen to the old stuff when there is new music out by the Stones 😅

Also people on IORR being utterly ridiculous again about Keith 🙄 none of those blind twats realised that Keith was having a cold in the Billboard interview, instead they claim he seemed mentally checked out and therefore mustn't be interested in the Stones anymore 🙄 imo it was an interesting interview and he seemed as engaged as ever, even if understandably a little less energetic and funny as e.g. in the Apple interview, since he OBVIOUSLY was having a cold, but god forbid Keith Richards behaves like a mere mortal and dares being sick at the incredibly young age of 82 🙄

It will probably end up on another version of FT.

They could have just released it as a single.  Maybe they still will.

Tbh I was thinking about this yesterday because Bad Luck Hideaway, thematically, seems to be the perfect counterpart to Rough and Twisted, lyrics wise I mean because in R&T it's about driving to some fucked up, run-down place with dirty water and disgusting food, and BLH seems to describe this run-down place further...so thematically, those songs would be very fitting as album opener and closer

However FT also is the continuation of HD which had also a cover version of a song of one of Mick and Keith's childhood heroes, played only by Mick and Keith as the album closer...so maybe for the sake of continuity, since this apparently is supposed to be a trilogy, Andy (I bet it was Andy) decided that FT should end in the same way with a cover of one of their childhood heroes, played by only Mick and Keith

Plus yes, you're obviously right about the further special edition they might release approx somewhen before Christmas 😅

There appears to be some kind of Rolling Stones theme at the cricket at Lord's today.

A blue tongue and lips logo on the advertising boards and the another asking spectators to Move Like Jagger during breaks in play.

No Stones appear to be present. Mick will be at the WC final anyway.

Alert Board Moderator about this Post!

To this point, I have taken at face value Mick's and Andrew's statements
about just how central Keith's efforts are to the fabric of Foreign
Tongues. I know from my own ears how guitar-driven all these
wonderful tracks are, and in my mind I have assigned much of the
DRIVE, and much of the little touches, the embroidery, to Keith,
as that has always been his forte...

But do I have the technical knowledge to back up my opinion? No.
Does iorr-monkeyman2000? You be the judge...

"Up until Hackney Diamonds, in most cases, Keith would go over
a track a few times and add details here and there, like on his solo
albums. There's almost none of that on Foreign Tongues, if any.
The lack of overdubbing by Keith can either be him being not that
interested or the way they recorded the album. My guess is it's the
latter. They ran through the tracks - most of which were already quite
prepared by Mick - and what you hear from Keith is what he thought
of in the short amount of preparation time.

Sometimes he provides a great riff - like on Mr. Charm - or beautiful
playing and complementing like on Ringing Hollow. It's mostly when
the chord changes are like something he'd write as well. But if it's a
chorus clearly written by Mick or Andrew, he just lays back and plays
some descending single note line or some thirds or whatever, and he
let's Mick or Andrew belt out the chords like on Divine Intervention or
Covered in You. This is most evident in the tracks with the poppy and
glossy choruses that don't really connect to the verses (this already
started with Angry). On Covered in You, it's especially clear that Keith
didn't know what to do with the track other than playing his signature
blues bend every few measures and some muted single notes here
and there.

Of course, it could also be that an overenthusiastic Andrew and Mick
already took up so much space in the guitar department on some of the
choruses, that Keith thought he needed to leave it be. Either way, I
think it's a shame, because Keith clearly shows on the album that he
can indeed still play very nicely and that he can still drive a song.
I would enjoy Foreign Tongues much more than I already do if Keith
was a bit more present with overdubs, or even if he played some of
the power chord driven choruses and not Mick or Andrew. Because
even a power chord on his Les Paul can be magic from Keith.

Btw, this is not new. Often, when they play a new song or a cover
live, Keith doesn't bother to play the more complicated chord changes
and just resolves to some single lines. Have you ever heard him play
the chords to the bridge in Sweet Sounds or belt out the chords to
the chorus of Angry live? How he plays a chorus, is most times a
good measurement of how involved he was in writing it."

provocative London Times photo, they didnt need to pose this way

ALSO via georgelicks...

#7 on the Billboard 200

"The Rolling Stones extend their record for the most top 10s on the
Billboard 200 albums chart as the band’s latest studio project, Foreign
Tongues, debuts at No. 7, marking the legendary act’s 39th top 10.
After the Stones, Barbra Streisand ranks second with 34 Billboard 200
top 10s, followed by Frank Sinatra with 33."

I can agree to some extent with what this person on IORR wrote, namely that I think that it has everything to do with the way they recorded the album in just 5 weeks, I'm pretty positive that Mick even mentioned in one of his 500 interviews that they didn't even do that many overdubs so it makes complete sense...

however....I disagree with what he said about the way Keith is playing a song live because I have the proof on video from the 2022 tour...Keith plays live however the fuck he wants and feels at that very moment, e.g. in Munich, he chose to barely play at all during the solo parts on Slipping Away, like he plucked maybe 3 notes and I didn't even notice this until last week when I literally rewatched my video, and I'm sure we all can agree this has nothing to do with how involved Keith was on Slipping Away because he wrote that whole thing...

then in Vienna, he played the most beautiful guitar solo EVER on this very same song, mentally I'm still standing in the Pit in the stadium in Vienna, watching and listening to Keith play this solo because it was so fucking beautiful and this is how I KNOW for a fact that Keith played the solo on Side Effects because he made the guitar sing the very same way 💜💜

(Unfortunately I obly recorded the 2nd part of the song in Vienna cause my phone slipped and I accidentally deleted the band introduction and Keith starting to play which was very tragic cause Mick introduced Keith as "my hawara" which in Austrian slang means "best friend" which was sweet...fun fact in Viennese slang it also means "lover" lol)

Also another thing about this playing live...Keith/ the guitars are barely even there on Mess it Up in favour of this fucking synthesiser, so he barely did anything on the record version of this song and even got into a little fight about the entire song with Mick because he didn't want it on HD in the first place, then Ronnie had to mediate lol...

Meanwhile, when they played it live in 2024, Keith played on it nicely and the song sounded SO much better live than on record due to the guitars:

just watched the World Cup halftime, thought it was, as far as
halftime shows go, an excellent tight, appropriately surreal 11 minutes.
The only misfire I thought was the Coldplay-plus-kids closer. Should
have ended with Shakira-plus-kids, as that's one of her specialties

Interestingly, except for Coldplay...
Madonna -- Andrew Watt is a producer on her new album
BTS -- Andrew Watt is the mastermind behind BTS member Jung Kook's
biggest solo hits. The performed BTS song includes the lyric "rock and
roll, rolling on like a rolling stone"
Justin Bieber -- Andrew Watt's close friend and collaborator
Shakira -- In 2021, Shakira posted about a recording session with
Andrew Watt, describing it as making "real music"
Burna Boy -- no collaboration with Andrew Watt, only with Mick Jagger

I think I need my hearing checked...I cannot hear Chad Smith on the bass drum in Beautiful Delilah unless i adjust some audio settings...I know its meant to be subtle, but really...a guest appearance for this???...

I've been traveling alot lately and I was away when the album dropped.
I love most of what I hear so far...
Which songs were leftovers from the HD sessions?

As this was released in summer, this would make it eligible for 2027 Grammy's, we shall see what will happen

Why DON'T the Stones wants us to hear Bad Luck Hideaway?...this is a killer duet with Mick and Keith......very strange

It will probably end up on another version of FT.

They could have just released it as a single.  Maybe they still will.

Just a guess...not having heard the track myself...if it is a blues or country track, it may just disqualify the
album from the Best Rock album category for a Grammy.

By my personal reckoning...(no hating please)
We have:

R&T...a a Hard Blues song....arguably could be a rock song...or not.

Ringing Hollow...a Country Honk song that the Stones do heavenly, as they have always done

Beautiful Delilah...another Blues/Americana song

That's 14 songs with 3 non-rockers....11 rockers in total.
If there were another "non-rocker"...that would place it below the 75% threshold as required by
the Grammy's present definition of a "Rock Album"...For albums containing greater than 75% playing time of new rock, hard rock or metal recordings.

75% of 14 = 10.5
75% of 15 = 11.25

I am not sure if a later-released bonus single would apply to this rule.
This is all just a guess....I'm no expert...I just play one on the interwebs.
