Irish Times rave review excerpt:

We think of the Stones as rock’s ever-virile headbanging pensioners –
bad-boy yin to The Beatles’ squeaky-clean yang. To be reminded of their
secret history as purveyors of generationally great social commentary comes as
a bolt from the great beyond on their freewheeling, frisky, and fabulous new album.

But Jagger doesn’t take the preaching too far – whatever Foreign Tongues is,
it isn’t the second coming of Bob Dylan  – but even when he isn’t
flinging mud at the world’s first trillionaire, Foreign Tongues crackles
with irreverence, its cheeky energy amplified by its producer, Andrew Watt.

The Stones are at a point in their lives when it’s traditional for
songwriters to turn mournful and melancholic, to wonder if this is all
there is and whether any of it was ever really worthwhile.
But that sort of wee-hours ennui is of no interest to Jagger and
Richards, rockers who continue to live in the moment and whose
music is defined by inexhaustible quantities of derring-do: they make
growing old sound like the best fun ever, and there’s a sense of long-
distance runners who have burst into one final sprint.

At a stage when other artists obsesses over legacy and the meaning
of it all, they turn away from such weighty themes and do what
they’ve always done. They make the blues sound entirely
immune to the indignities of age. That they purse their lips and
waggle their tongues at Elon Musk is just a bonus.

I wonder whether that bre podcast is a normal audio or a video podcast with more scenes of then from the studio? It would be brilliant...the closest thing to an actual Netflix or DVD docu...but I also take normal audio interviews over nothing lol

I just read that Uncut interview on my library account and Keith made me laugh when talking about his new song on the record because he basically said: oh it's about no one in particular, just to describe his and Mick's strained 80s relationship lol:

"Among the songs recorded at Metropolis, the Stones successfully nailed the slow-burning “Some Of Us”, a Richards number they’d first tried during the Dirty Work sessions.

“It’s not about any one particular person,” laughs Richards. “It’s about sometimes you get somebody with an attitude and they expect to be adored. They take other people for granted. It’s about big heads and small hearts.""

What also got me was Ronnie still talking about Charlie in present tense, it almost made me tear up...

“I was very drawn to the Stones, because I felt like I was in their gang,” says Wood. “When Brian died and I was around the periphery of Hyde Park, this car pulls up amongst all these people. Mick and Charlie get out and they come over to me, and they go, ‘Hello, how you doing? Look, all these people, we’ve got a lot to do. We’ll see you soon.’ I went, ‘Yes, sooner than you think.’ I never forgot that. Charlie remembers me saying that.”

Keith also said loads of nice things about Mick which was real sweet, he once again praised his harp play:

“I’ve been telling him for years what a great harp player he is, but he shrugs it off,” says Richards. “He’s found a unique style, sometimes almost a throwback to Louis Armstrong – who, of course, was a key influence on Little Walter. I’ve always been knocked out by Mick’s playing.”

That part was also touching:

“It’s beautiful,” says Richards. “I loved doing it, taking this old material and just taking it in a different way. The thing is, to do that sort of stuff, you really need our Mick Jagger. That’s the great thing about recording: you got it.”

It’s also very poignant, because it is you and Mick together, and you’re the last surviving original Stones.

“I never think about that when Mick and I are just sort of plunking away,” he admits. “Then I understand later. It’s the connections in the grander scheme of things, isn’t it?”

He shrugs, adjusts his beanie and chuckles to himself.

“What can a poor boy do?”

And this:

Richards sees a less tangible connection between the Stones in 2026 and their earlier selves. “The sense of humour.

There’s a sense of continuity, which is a rare thing in this world. I relish it and treasure it. And you know, although guys are dropping by the wayside, I love Mick’s enthusiasm. He’s my best mate in many ways.”

“Oh, that’s very nice,” says Jagger, when Uncut relays the compliment. “That’s very nice.”

And of course, Keith himself suggesting residencies (yes please, some shows in London and NYC is literally all we're asking for lol!!!):

“I don’t know if tours are possible,” he says. “It’s the travelling that takes it out of you. But I do see the possibility of us doing a residency somewhere. Wherever it is, London, New York, Paris, anywhere. I’ll play Rome! But I don’t see why they shouldn’t be able to throw some shows together in a new format.”

A really great article, unfortunately I can't seem to copy everything at once just smaller parts...

True but with the footy World Cup on at present I thought he might have been there from the start. I'm sure he will be at some point.  England should at least get to the quarter finals.

As far as I remember from past World Cups and Euros I don't think I've seen Mick at the stadium before the knock out stage^^ he currently seems to be spending time in London, a few days ago he went to the V&A gala (aka the Met Gala of London lol)

They say six "podcasts". I'd be shocked if they added up to more
than an hour. I wouldn't be shocked if they added up to half that.
The Stones have always excelled at "less is more".

ALSO listening party two hours early, Sonic Boom Records, Toronto

In the trailer Ronnie says this album may be better than the last one.

In my opinion HD was their best album in decades so if he's right then FT is gonna be great.

Amazing news! Couldn't be more excited!
In my own opinion, Rough&Twisted is a way betterfirst sing than Ngry and so is In The Stars...I never liked Angry mich, live even less...SSOH is a masterpiece but it's not as good for listening to it on repeat as In The Stars...I'm very curious for Jealous Lover but I already like the snippets way more than Mess it Up which was my least fave on HD (live it was fun tho!)

(via iorr-bye bye johnny via Süddeutsche Zeitung, translation by ChatGPT)

interview by Torsten Gross
19 June 2026
excerpts

SZ: At least your reputation as a sex symbol still seems to matter to
you. You’ll be 83 in July, but in the new song “Jealous Lover” you
sound like a lovesick 20-year-old with that high head voice. How do you do that?

MJ: Actually, the song isn’t about sex, but about relationships in general…

SZ: But the singing style does give it a very sexual charge, doesn’t it?

MJ: That may be true. In that song I switch between head voice and
chest voice, but I do sing quite high at times, that’s correct.
However, it’s not even the song with the highest pitch on the new
album—that would be “Divine Intervention.”

SZ: Once again: How do you do that at 82?

MJ: No idea. But it comes quite easily to me. I just wrote the song
like that… First I recorded it in a consistently high register and then
added a few overdubs in a lower, powerful voice for the chorus to set
it apart from the verse. Afterwards I layered some harmonies on top,
and as a result it automatically became higher and higher. I just kept
going and didn’t think about it; it took quite a long time until
everything was finished. Singing in head voice is generally no
problem for me. Do you know what the problematic part of the song
was?

SZ: The text?

MJ: Exactly. I wrote the choruses pretty quickly, but when it came to
the first verse, I spent a lot of time throwing out lines and tightening
everything up. It was a long process, a struggle to find the right words.

SZ: It is a typical Mick Jagger text. What fascinates you so much
about the dynamics between men and women that you keep making
them the subject of your songs?

MJ: First of all, it is simply a very classic theme. There is hardly any
subject in poetry and pop songs that has been discussed more often.
Above all, jealousy is timeless. That is why I worked with the color
green in this song. Green stands for jealousy, envy. Emeralds,
however, are also green, for example, and symbolize above all love
and hope. These are the images in this song, and that is how I
eventually arrived at the motif of the female praying mantis, which,
as is well known, eats the male—and is also green.

SZ: There are many of these classic Jagger motifs in the album’s
lyrics; however, it seems to me that “Foreign Tongues” is also a
political album. In “Covered In You” you sing: “I wake up sick and
tired of all these autocrats,” you name the “mad mogul Mr. Musk” in
“Mr. Charm,” lament “Lady Liberty don’t look so good” in “Ringing
Hollow,” and “a poisonous cloud, there’s a sickness in the land” in the
single “In The Stars.”

MJ: You have correctly identified all these references, which makes
me happy. Yesterday I spoke with someone who asked me why I no
longer make comments about the social and political situation in my
new songs. That surprised me, since there is quite a lot about it on the album.

SZ: What motivated you to do this?

MJ: Well, we have problems everywhere; we are experiencing major
changes. And not all of them are good. There is uncertainty caused
by wars—the two that we all constantly talk about, and some others,
such as the one in the Congo, which has been going on for 15 years
and actually costs the most human lives of all. Yet most of us hardly
ever think about it because it seems so far away. All of these things affect me.

SZ: The Rolling Stones on “Foreign Tongues” generally don’t sound
like a group over 80 years old, but rather like disciples of the
longevity movement. The album has an almost youthful energy…

MJ: That’s good. Most of these songs are new, and that automatically
gives it a certain dynamism. When you write a new song and play it
for the first time, it simply can’t sound stale, you know. I’m glad
when that is obviously also audible.

SZ: How does Andrew Watt manage to push all these graying rock
legends to peak performance?

MJ: He is very good at organizing a production like that, almost like
a real football coach. He simply makes sure that it works. First, I
set up a plan with Andy: “All right, we’re going into the studio for
four to five weeks. We work five days a week and have a clearly
defined goal each day.” Everything is decided in advance.

SZ: In earlier years, recording sessions of the Rolling Stones were
not infrequently a highly explosive, very unpredictable affair. What
you are describing now sounds quite organized, almost bureaucratically disciplined.

MJ: That’s basically how it is too. Everything is indeed running much
more concentrated than it used to be … we always know exactly
which songs we need to record and when. Afterwards, Andy keeps
track during the overdub sessions of the sheer amount of material
that has been created in this way, which parts from the live sessions
are kept and which need to be re-recorded. He is in control of the
situation at all times.

SZ: In preparing for this interview, numerous people in my circle
were surprised that you are in such good shape given the vast
amounts of drugs you are said to have taken.

MJ: (laughs loudly)

SZ: But in reality, it is the case that you have been living an
extremely disciplined life for decades and doing an incredible amount
of sports, right?

MJ: Yes, that’s true, of course.

SZ: Nevertheless, with the song “Side Effects” there is now a nod
from the past; it’s about drugs and pills and their side effects.

MJ: The idea came from Keith—he brought in a verse and then we
developed it together and wrote the next two parts of the song. “Side
Effects” is meant to be amusing to a certain degree; it’s intended
humorously. There are a few songs of this kind on the album, such as
“Mr. Charm,” which is also a humorous song.

SZ: I still have to ask this question, of course: Will you play a new
Stones tour? Recently there were a lot of rumors about canceled concerts.

MJ: We are working on something. However, I don’t think there will
be any concerts this year, so I can rule that out. Hopefully next year.
I would love to go on tour again.

(via iorr-bye bye johnny via Spiegel, translation by ChatGPT)

interview by Andreas Borcholte and Philipp Oehmke
19.06.2026
excerpts

SPIEGEL: Mr. Jagger, how is a Rolling Stones song actually created nowadays?

Jagger: Of course, it has changed over the years. In the past, Keith
and I still had to come together in the studio for that and sat there
with our guitars in front of those old tape recorders with the large
tape reels. Today, we sit alone at home and compose on our own.

SPIEGEL: Do you start with the music or with a text?

Jagger: Neither. Hard to explain — take the song “Jealous Lover”
from the new album, for example: I was at my house in France,
where I have a small studio. Or rather, a room with lots of
instruments. I was fooling around on the electric piano, and this
chorus came to me. I have a little rhythm machine, and I switched
on the beat “Hip-Hop 3.”

SPIEGEL: Hip-Hop 3?

Jagger: Yes, Hip-Hop 3. Very simple. When you’re composing, you
don’t want complicated beats. When you’re just starting a song, you
need a beat that helps you. I knew Hip-Hop 3 would work here. It
goes like this (sings): Dub-du-du-bak. So I write the chorus, then
the first verse, rack my brains over whether the song needs another building block...

SPIEGEL: Sounds amazingly easy.

Jagger: Wait! Haha. After that it gets difficult. I like the music, but
now I have to get the lyrics right and spend a lot of time constructing them.

SPIEGEL: But you know beforehand what the song will be about, or
do you just write freely?

Jagger: I have an idea. Here it’s about a jealous person. A jealous
woman. I know about that. But of course it can’t only be about that,
that would be too simple, the lyrics need another twist. So I write a
third part, something like: But I can’t live without you or (now he
sings): All of this doesn’t make a difference because I can’t live
without you. That turns the lyrics into more than just a complaint
about jealousy.

SPIEGEL: When you’re satisfied, do you send the song to the producer?

Jagger: No. Keith.

SPIEGEL: You send it to Keith Richards.

Jagger: I can’t send it to Keith because Keith isn’t online. He doesn’t
have email. I have to drive over to him and play it for him.

SPIEGEL: So what are the chances that Keith will like the song too?
Put differently, do you drive there nervously?

Jagger: If it’s good, he’ll like it. You know, after 65 years I simply
know what Keith likes. However, I still haven’t fully understood what
he doesn’t like. That’s a bit erratic.

SPIEGEL: Is Keith allowed to write lyrics as well?

Jagger: He occasionally writes lyrics. On this album, the idea for
“Side Effects” comes from him, as does the lyric of the song he also
sings, “Some of Us.” He wrote that almost entirely on his own; only
a few lines are from me.

SPIEGEL: How do your sketches then become proper songs?

Jagger: First I record demos for all the songs, together with Matt
Clifford. I’ve been doing that with him for decades; he’s the
keyboardist in our live band …

SPIEGEL: And he also arranged, for example, the UEFA Champions League anthem …

Jagger: Exactly, I make the demos with him and then see where the
problems lie in the songs. Sometimes I then notice: “I need another
section there, this still isn’t enough.” In principle: write rather too
much material than too little. Later you can always cut, remove
things, or move them to another place. Now it’s about the
arrangement and the groove. How fast should the song be? What
beat does it need? Only then do I go into the studio with Steve …

SPIEGEL: Steve Jordan, your new drummer, successor to Charlie
Watts, who died in 2021 …

Jagger: … and I first work only with him to find out: can the groove
be improved even further? Does this groove even work? For me,
everything revolves around the groove.

SPIEGEL: What do you mean by groove in a Stones song?

Jagger: Groove means that it’s first and foremost about the drums
and about how I imagine the bass line and how the rhythm of the
lyrics fits into that groove. I then sing the entire lyrics to Steve, only
to him. No guitar, no piano, nothing. I just sing. And I immediately
notice whether the groove he’s playing, or the bass drum, works.*

(*my comment: "Jesus Christ, make Steve a Stone already!")

Jagger: The whole thing is extremely rhythmic. Everything I sing is rhythm.
That’s why it has to match the drums exactly. Of course, the guitars
also have to fit later. But the foundation is the drums and the voice.
Only after that do the guitar riffs come in.

SPIEGEL: Tell Keith Richards that.

Jagger: Yes, yes, I know. But in the end he would even agree with
me. Because he can’t develop a riff unless that groove is there. He
has to hear it first. The groove determines what the riff ultimately sounds like.

SPIEGEL: That means you build the frameworks of the songs, and
only later does Keith Richards join in? Is that okay for him?

Jagger: Keith can help. Besides, he already knew all the songs; I had
previously played them for him in New York, at his home.

SPIEGEL: He lives in New York?

Jagger: A bit outside.

SPIEGEL: You’re said to have a house nearby there as well. So you
pack your guitar and go there?

Jagger: With my guitar, and I also bring the beatbox.

SPIEGEL: And Keith Richards sits down and listens.

Jagger: Yes, and he also plays a few things that I should listen to.

SPIEGEL: Can one imagine that as a nice situation?

Jagger: To be honest, it’s pretty exhausting. There are a lot of songs.
And I have to play them all live. With some of them I have to write
down the chord changes beforehand. I could never possibly
memorize them all. There are too many.

SPIEGEL: When you then go into the studio to record the songs, do
you all play together? Or does everyone come individually and record
their instrument alone, as is common with many bands, also so that
you don’t have to keep seeing each other all the time?

Jagger: We usually record everything live with the whole band first.
That’s always how we’ve done it. Then we see which parts we want
to keep—and everything else is later added or overdubbed, i.e. re-
recorded. I almost never keep the actual vocal from these live
recordings. I often call out changes in between or give instructions.
Also, it’s much too loud in the studio—the drums, the whole band.
You can’t really record a good lead vocal like that. I haven’t done
that for 40 years.

SPIEGEL: Do you still enjoy going to the studio together?

Jagger: It is our workplace.

SPIEGEL: In London?

Jagger: And also in L.A. The studio is nowadays a huge electronic
tool. For over 50 years we have been working in the studio; of course
the technology has become increasingly sophisticated. And above all:
faster. In the past, people spent nights turning the huge reels of tape
machines to the right position. Nevertheless, we still use equipment
from the fifties. Those are extremely popular with these young
producers. You can hardly find them anymore. You have to track
them down at auctions in Denmark or something like that.

SPIEGEL: Do you let a young producer tell you what to do?

Jagger: Of course. I listen to it and then say: “That’s complete
nonsense. No, that’s wrong, you’re not doing that correctly – you’re
completely off.” We joke about it now. We don’t have arguments
anymore, we have jokes.

SPIEGEL: When you watch the old film footage—for example from
the documentary "Cocksucker Blues” from the Stones’ 1972 US tour,
which was never officially released because of its drug and sex scenes?

Jagger: When I see that, I seem like a different person to myself.

SPIEGEL: Really?

Jagger: It’s a different person. It’s another facet of you, but of course
it’s still you. And one mustn’t forget, it is also a filmed version of
me, even if it is a so-called documentary film. And I am playing Mick
Jagger in it. A public persona.

SPIEGEL: On the new album, you cover “You Know I’m No Good” by
Amy Winehouse, who broke down under her public persona.

Jagger: We thought for a long time about what we should cover. At
first we considered
something from earlier times, Aretha Franklin,
but also more obscure soul tracks*.

(*my comment: "exactly as I speculated.")

Jagger: In the end, we worked our way forward through the eras
and thought: hey, we’re in England, Amy is English, and this song
would work as a groove track. “You Know I’m No Good” is a song
that lives entirely from its groove, a kind of soul piece that is
reminiscent of the seventies. Even if it of course sounds more
modern. When I listened to Amy’s original again, I thought:
wow, that’s a pretty complicated beat, not even easy to dance to.
That’s how I came up with the idea of using a different beat, one of
the first I ever heard, from this blues singer Lowell Fulson.
That’s more of a Stones beat than an Amy beat.

SPIEGEL: You said you would have liked to go on tour this summer.
But Keith didn’t want to?

Jagger: I would love to go on tour as soon as possible. We were
actually supposed to this summer. Now everything depends on Keith.
He’s fine, but he didn’t want to go on tour. It was too much for him.
I can’t force him.

Thanks for shaing those interviews, Rev! Especially the Spiegel one was great
I thought it was very endearing that Mick said: oh Keith doesn't have email so I have no other choice than go visit him to play the songs live to him, as if he couldn't just send it to Jane Rose 😅 nah it's really beautiful to hear that they're still working like that, playing their songs to each other in private first, I love that

Also about that album play party...I doubt Mick or Keith will be there...by members of the Stones they probably mean Chanel and Matt (who're living in London) and maybe if very lucky Ronnie, he seems like the guy who'd have fun with an event like thaf...if England is doing well in the World Cup, Mick will be in the US during that time^^

Most of the stuff will probably be pre-recorded on a giant screen anyway.  That will be the extent of the Glimmers involvement.

Yeah that would make sense...maybe throw in some more studio video footage they haven't released yet and later also will be used for promo...

I don't think this is connected to that listening party BUT in that one interview Mick said regarding to touring that they are working on something but no tour this year and hopefully next year but the "working on something" part to me didn't sound like they are already planning residencies (altho they better should venue-wise) but rather that they might surprise us with a Racket style show...NYC again would be my best bet since Mick will very likely soon go to the US anyway for the football and Keith is there anyway (plus Steve too)...

if you can access spotify, the extended version...

https://open.spotify.com/episode/06zzEZ2bD8nQNWBqLlrVzX

on the extended version, Keith hypes Darryl and Steve, calling them
the Stones' rhythm section...

I'm gonna disagree and make another wild guess. With people
traveling from Japan and Australia (and probably, soon, other
contest-countries), I'm guessing the contest winners (along with
the world's media) will experience in person the new official line-up,
all five Stones, including Darryl and Steve, which will be HUGE
worldwide news (imagine the photos!), timed for when the publicity
will benefit Foreign Tongues the most.

Based on my observations, we will be following the Some Girls/Emotional Rescue blueprint. This is outstanding.
I am ready for some Foreign leaks!

One review I saw is this album is better than your momma...

We did it! Great work!

I disagree about this, Rev...I doubt they give a fuck about stuff like that and it's not worth much publicity, no matter where the winner comes from, I mean in the end it's someone from London or so^^ I much rather guess there will be a Racket style show in NYC around release day (because Micj said they are working on something), that creates WAY more publicity and is way more exciting for journalists than reporting about some guy from like Surrey winning something that's not even explicitly labelled as an M&G

Also that interview with Keith was fun, he's always hilarious to listen to...love that he named Rambler as his fave most Stones-like song, I agree 💜 it's the Stones in an nutshell...also when he said their secret of still going after all these years is his bond with Mick...10000% that...no other band has that special kind of magic and connection that those two have together and basically all their bandmates and collaborators have stated so throughout the years

If Darryl and Stever were to be made full members, shouldn't the same apply to Chuck?
