Is he insulting Hank Williams or Honky Tonk music in general? Honky Tonk Woman - he wrote that beloved song which is played in honky tonks every day and night in the US, so maybe he has to get away from it all because it's a bad thing? Oh please, it's so bad I'm taking a break from it all. Yeah we were locked down for Covid, when we were living in a Ghost Town!
Well, I've got to take a break from it all
'Cause the wind and the wilderness calls
And I just need some peace from the storms
I got to take a break from it all
And I got to take a break for a while
Where there ain't another human for a hundred miles
I hate being enclosed by the walls
And I got to take a break from it all
I'll be dancing on diamonds, I'll be skating on glass
I'll be chopping up wood, I'll be splitting the halves
An old AM radio is all that I've got
It just plays Hank Williams and some bad honky-tonk
'Cause I got to take a break from it all
And I got to break away from it all
From thе city and the suburbs and sprawl
And the small-town chatter and thе know it alls
To a place where no one can call
It just sounds to me that he (the protagonist in the song) has simply
placed himself in self-exile to sort his mind and
think about the next path in his personal journey.
Many of us have been there, myself included.
Nearly everyday I said, "what the hell am I doing here??"
I was a city kid in the boonies of upstate NY...but then I remembered,
I was there to "get away from it all" and to think about my next move in life.
I dont think the line in the song is a dig at Hank Williams or Honky-tonk music,
but rather a dig at the awful, predictive playlist on the only AM radio station he gets clearly.
The real question to think about is what exactly is the "it" in "I've got to take a break from IT all"...
Here is some food for thought....It's all a trilogy....
Do you think its merely coincidence that Whole Wide World plays just before Dreamy Skies??
Read those lyrics then read the lyrics of DS....WWW is the prequel to DS....
Was it a woman who was the reason to take a break from it all??
Well, now in Mess It Up, he's back in the groove and runs into the BITCH that caused him
to go into exile in the first place to clear his head and "take a break from it all"...
But he's refusing to mess himself up again because of her.... (who hasn't been there?!?)
