(yes, this is speculation -- reasoned speculation)

"Fully Finished Studio Outtakes" kicks off the 60th anniversary celebrations

Vols 1-2-3 is a wonderful gift from the Stones to their hardcore fans

Well-connected sources say there will be two more such gifts,
Vols 4-5-6 and vols 7-8-9

If you were the cynical sort, you could call these albums bribes to
keep the hardcore fans onside during the inevitable "60 greatest songs"
hype coming this Christmas.

So yes, I think that the decision has been made that an official new
studio album will NOT be part of what is planned for the 60th.

And I think it is a fair exchange. Nine albums of raw Stones that we
all can enjoy instead of one album of polished Stones that many if
not most of us would have been largely indifferent to. 

Brilliant way to handle this situation.

Here's another way to think about it...

"Fully Finished Studio Outtakes" proves beyond the shadow of a doubt
what i have long contended: That the Stones could have put out a
fine new album any time they wanted.

Popular opinion on the fan forums support this: "Why didn't they just finish
some of these tracks and put out a new album?" It is the moan of the day.

But if you take out the moan-tone, it is THE proper question.

And the answer is something else i've long contended: That if the Stones
would have put out a new album of originals, no matter how good it was,
it would have damaged them commercially, in terms of ticket and
merchandise sales.

A new album by a major touring legacy band is currently viewed by the market
as subtracting from their appeal, not adding to it. If it has a classic sound,
its been-there done-that. If its current-sounding, its trendy. Either way, its
not gonna sell very much...

So the proper marketing move is to more-or-less stand pat on your recording
history. Have fun with it. Exploit it. Tour it. Take victory laps. Do whatever
smaller recording projects you feel like, but mostly just enjoy your legendary
status. After sixty years, you've certainly earned it.

More possible evidence that this is indeed an official release:


1) The artwork says "Black Frisco Records, 8-1-7 nishi-shinjuku shinjuku-ku tokyo 163 japan"

That is the exact address of ISO Records which has done numerous official David Bowie releases,
in association with Sony and Columbia

"Black Frisco Records" was never heard-of before now


2) Keith posts "new music on the horizon" and a few days later we get this


3) Does anybody really believe that the Stones could not have crushed this release
if they wanted to? If it was stolen or hacked.

Its a nice thought but I doubt they have that spirit of generosity.

What it does suggest is that they do (or at some point did) have plans for a career spanning boxed set of unreleased material, as several of these songs appear to have had work done on them years after they were originally recorded.

Leaks and thefts do happen. The Voodoo Brew and Voodoo Stew box sets (8-discs worth) came from material leaked by Ronnie's stepson.  I remember getting a very low generation tape of the original c90 of Dirty Work outtakes in early 1987 and the guy who sent them to me told me that HE got them from a guy in LA who was given the tape by none other than Ronnie himself! Don Was has had material stolen and leaked. The previously unheard of Steel Wheels Monitor Mixes that were first circulated on this site in 2006 or 2007 were passed on to us by Chuch Magee's widow.


The Bigger Bang alternate mixes that I circulated a few years ago came about when I downloaded them off a guy on soulseek - they were in mp3 format so when I messaged him and asked him if he had the flac files he told me he hadnt and explained how he got them - he worked for a company who in the summer of 2005 were using Sterling Sound Studios in New York as a storage facility. He happened to be browsing one day, saw a folder marked 'Rolling Stones', found the files and downloaded them (unfortunately he had a HD crash and the lossless files got lost, so mp3 is all that exists). He assumed these versions were in circulation until I told him otherwise.

I guess whoever 'liberated' these were very good at keeping their mouths shut and their powder dry until they were able to arrange to have them mass produced for profit.

I'm thinking: keep the original thread for the music, and use this one for
the things that seem a bit strange...

1) I had been googling "fully finished studio outtakes" and the hits had been steadily growing,
but now, although google says 4770 results, it actually only gives 34 results, ending on page 4

2) an ebay listing sold 102 copies of the digipack (out of a total run supposedly of 500),
but if you search the item number, it now shows no such item, even under "sold" listings.
(i'm not sure how i found it -- it was probably one of the now-purged google results)

so it does qualify as a bit strange when both google and ebay are disappearing this thing...

Saw that. Only a rumour though. Two different bands, however but an intriguing propsect

so at least this seller (100% positive feedback) is expecting more copies -- which
is intriguing

including ones manufactured in europe

PS I see that the "Mayflower" label has issued quite a few Stones boots over the years

So is this just a boot of a boot? Or is something else going on?

Without any proof, but knowing Jagger, I've always thought that at least some
Stones boots were surreptitiously part of the Stones business model. But these new
"finished outtakes" might be taking this concept to a whole new level

i have a better way now to see when a new copy appears for sale. it shows
zero/none now, but 10stella49 has sold 78 copies today that have appeared

bv/iorr is allowing substantial discussion of buying and sharing this item
and pinning it on his main forum, not just restricting it to his trader pages.

ebay update:

1) swedish and italian sellers of the orig "made in japan" ones still sold out/MIA

2) briefly a seller from the seychelles(!) showed up with 7 copies of what appeared
to be the same as the swedish/italian one, but listed as "as good as new",
whatever that means. For only 30 + 10 shipping. all gone now. But nice to '
see a third continent getting in on the action.

3) the japanese seller still has the expensive "made in europe" ones, but now says:
"I can deal with this item till March 15, MONDAY!!" Does this mean that Stones Inc
is about to take some kind of action?

Maybe. Or maybe the seller is just trying to hype sales.

sorry, i was speaking loosely. I thought it would be clearer that way. Apparently not. To be precise:
-- the ones from japan i called "made in europe" actually say "made in EU"
-- the ones from europe i called "made in japan" actually just give a Tokyo record company address

and just to add to the weirdness, the ones that say "made in EU" include an obi, which i think
is only used by japanese manufacturers
