Remember the day well. The times are a bit foggy. I was teaching in New Jersey when I got a loudspeaker call to come to the office. There they told me to call my wife at her job. I figure it was something serious. It was! My dedicated wife – not a fan btw – told me the Stones were playing on a truck in NYC and had announced concert tickets were going on sale.
That put me in panic mode. Not only did I want to go, but I wanted to see multiple shows. I got class coverage and went to the bank for money. Then, as school was ending, I grabbed a kid who I knew was Stones fan as much as an 8th grader could be. Promised to take him to a show if he waited on line with me. He was all for it. We drove to his house, asked his mom if I could drag her son to NY with me, and took off hoping not to hit much traffic.
Made good time, the line wasn’t bad, ended up with 2 tickets each for 4 shows. Took the student and my wife to one. Friends to the others. Couldn’t have worked out better. Seats were about halfway up. Not great, but not in the heavens. Student became a lifelong Stones fan and we still keep in touch. Actually met for a show in Philly many years later. I owed my wife big time. She’s still not a fan, but puts up with my Stones insanity after all these years!
Great shows. The lotus flower opening, Billy Preston on keyboards, Ron Wood first timer, encores with Clapton and Carlos Santana. Actually taped one performance on cassette, but the shows were bootlegged by a lot of people and readily available. Only regret is that I missed the Stones driving down 8th Avenue? playing “Brown Sugar” on the back of a flatboard truck. But you can’t always get . . .
