Really, fellas - an extended version of this could be the "Miss You" of the lockdown, which means the era-defining song.  Sometimes the fans are right, so...

5 weeks away, yet its already available to stream?

WTF.

I think its a very good track. Not sensational but no-one seriously expects something of the level of 'Sympathy for the Devil' or 'Gimme Shelter' from a bunch of septuagenarians - better than I would have expected from the band at this stage of the game and certainly superior to the two new songs that were on 'Grrr' .

Sounds very much like a Mick song but obviously there's the usual Stones influences.  I like his voice - I didnt care for the way it was going a decade or so ago (see 'Watching the river flow' and some of the 'Exile' reissue tracks) but this is more like it. And the harp playing is stellar - shades of 'Love is Strong'. They all sound in top form.

Lyrically? Well it reads like it could have been recorded in the last couple of weeks although that's obviously not the case - unless he re-wrote it a bit and overdubbed things.

Rolling Stones Drop New Song, ‘Living in a Ghost Town’
Surprise release is their first original song in eight years

By ANDY GREENE

The Rolling Stones have released the brand-new song “Living in a Ghost Town” to tide fans over until they’re able to reschedule the upcoming leg of their No Filter tour.

It’s their first original composition since “Doom and Gloom” and “One More Shot” came out on their 2012 compilation album GRRR!, although they did put out the blues cover collection Blues & Lonesome in 2016.

In a new interview with Zane Lowe of Apple Music, Jagger said he wrote the song with Keith Richards over a year ago. “It wasn’t written for now, but it was just one of those odd things,” he said. “It was written about being in a place which was full of life but is now bereft of life so to speak…I was just jamming on the guitar and wrote it really quickly in like 10 minutes.”

He changed some of the lyrics to reflect the times. “Keith Richards and I both had the idea that we should release it,” he said. “But I said, ‘Well I’ve got to rewrite it.’ Some of it is not going to work and some of it was a bit weird and a bit too dark. So I slightly rewrote it. I didn’t have to rewrite very much, to be honest. It’s very much how I originally did it.”

The Stones have been slowly picking away at a new album for the past few years. Richards told Lowe that this song was recorded at a Los Angeles studio in early 2019. “It’s sort of eerie when suddenly it’s coming to life,” he said. “I mean the ghost comes to life… I had said to Don [Was] about a month or so ago, ‘Hey, this is a time for the ghost town track.’ And then Mick called me and said the same thing and that great minds think alike.”

The band hasn’t released an album of new material since 2005’s A Bigger Bang. “I don’t just want it to be a good album, I want it to be great,” Jagger said. “I’m very hard on myself. If I write something or if I write something with Keith Richards or whatever, it’s going to be great. It can’t just be good.”

The Stones’ focus in the past two decades has been on touring. Their 2019 No Filter North American stadium tour was an enormous success and they planned on repeating it this summer in markets they missed, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced them to postpone everything until some undetermined point in the future.

“We don’t know when the next tour outside’s going to be,” Jagger told Lowe. “You would imagine that playing outside would be more healthy than playing inside, one would imagine, but you don’t know. And people are saying, ‘Well are you going to be playing in a stadium that’s 40,000 people? You’re going to have 20,000 people in there,’ for instance. But this is all in the realm of conjecture.”

The one bit of good Stones news in the middle of all this, however, is that Jagger and Richards have plenty of extra time on their hands now. “We’ve got another five or six tracks and there’s a lot of sort of soul feel about it for some reason without anybody intending to,” Richards said. “Obviously right now we’ve got nothing else to do but write some more songs, right?”

Need some more listens but any time Mick is on harp, I'm happy.

It is high time that they use a new producer. The same sound for 25 years is getting a little old. I get that Mick and Keith are the main forces there, but they need a change.

The Rolling Stones have released their first new single in eight years, Living In A Ghost Town.

The sparse blues track references the coronavirus crisis, with Sir Mick Jagger singing: "Life was so beautiful, now we all got locked down / Feel like a ghost, living in a ghost town."

In a statement, the band said the track was initially recorded a year ago in LA but was "finished in lockdown".

"We thought would resonate through the times we're living in," Sir Mick said.

Speaking to Beats 1 Radio, the singer revealed the track had been written "in 10 minutes" during a jam session last February.

"It wasn't written for now but it was written about being in a place which was full of life, and then now that's all bereft of life, so to speak," he told Zane Lowe.

"And when I went back to what I'd written originally lyrically, it was all full of plague terms and things like that.

"Keith Richards and I both had the idea that we should release it. But I said, 'Well I've got to rewrite it - some of it is not going to work and some of it was a bit weird and a bit too dark'."

Richards said the song had been completed "via satellite" before being released on Thursday.

"It's sort of eerie when suddenly it's coming to life," he said. "We sort of did it from outer space. But I actually liked the way it turned out.

Living In A Ghost Town is the first original song the band have released since two new tracks - Doom and Gloom and One More Shot - featured on their 2012 Greatest Hits album Grrr!

Before that, their last album of new material was 2005's A Bigger Bang.

"Yeah, it was so long," Sir Mick told Beats 1. "And I think one of the problems I personally have with it is that it's suddenly that you want it to be really good.

"So I don't just want it to be a good album, I want it to be great. You know? Yes, I'm very hard on myself. If I write something or if I write something with Keith Richards or whatever, it's going to be great. It can't just be good."

he Stones were last seen on the One World: Together At Home concert last weekend, playing together from four separate locations - although drummer Charlie Watts did not appear to have a drum kit in his house.

Instead, he banged on flight cases and the arm of a sofa for their rendition of You Can't Always Get What You Want.

Reflecting on the current situation, Sir Mick said he was "very aware of how lucky I am."

"A lot of people lost their jobs and it's not your fault. It's circumstances completely out of your control. It's not as though I did a bad job or I screwed up on my job and got fired," he said.

"And also the less money you have, the more worries you have. So for lots of people, it's really tough.

"It's been a horrible time for everyone. But some people worse than others."

Except he didn't. That's just newspapers being lazy so that their regular readers know who he is referring to.

Staggering to think that the Stones have released newly recorded music in seven different decades.

There can't be too many acts in the history of popular music who can claim that - Sinatra is the only one that I can think of off the top of my head (1930's - 1990's)

It's infinitely more remarkable when it's done by a band

As a solo artist Sinatra es 1940's - 1990's, his first album was in 1946, his first recording in 1939 but with the Harry James Orchestra

so... in short...

the Stones rules you bastards

I heard it a couple a hours ago and didn't like it at all. Then I gave myself some time and tried again with a heart full of good will. It sounds even blander.

If a band with three songwriters spends years without releasing anything new and chooses Living In a Ghost Town as an opportunity to show they are still producing good stuff, well...  I can only hope it's one of next album's fillers.

I totally agree with Bruno on this one.

Sounds hastily put together, both the video and the song.
