Stocked that Criss Cross is finally being officially released and becoming ’cannon’

It was always one of my favourite outtakes!!!!

The other being ‘through the lonely nights’ although that was a bside

'Criss Cross' now available on streaming services.

It sounds great. Its a longer version than what we've heard on bootlegs and sounds cleaned up somewhat but Mick's original vocal has mercifully been left as it was.

Here's the song without the 'external' noises that are in the promo video

Interestingly the song is credited to Jagger-Richards-Taylor.

Looks like Mick T's efforts at finally getting the credits that he's long deserved are starting to pay off.

Producer: Jimmy Miller
Associated  Performer, Keyboards: Billy Preston
Associated  Performer, Timbales: Jim Keltner
Associated  Performer, Bass (vocal): Bill Wyman
Associated  Performer, Drums: Charlie Watts
Associated  Performer, Guitar: Keith Richards
Associated  Performer, Vocals: Mick Jagger
Associated  Performer, Guitar: Mick Taylor
Studio  Personnel, Engineer: Andy Johns
Composer  Lyricist: Keith Richards
Composer  Lyricist: Mick Jagger
Composer  Lyricist: Mick Taylor

No credits for sax, bizarrely enough. And Bill as the only credited backing vocalist?  Grin

That clip of 'Scarlet' reminds me a bit of 'Dancing In The Light'.

Primal Scream's song 'Rocks' has long been regarded as aping 'Rocks Off' somewhat but I've always believed that they stole the hook from the chorus of  'Criss Cross' which would have been available on bootlegs back then. Check it out from around 0:35 and see what you think

Coincidentally, they'd worked with Jimmy Miller on their previous album to this one

Now it makes sense. I had never put this together, but I thought Criss Cross reminded me of something. I wonder if Jailbird is also based on something specific rather than just influenced by the Stones because that has always reminded me of something but I couldn't pin it down.

The original running order for GHS was supposed to run like this :

Side 1:
Dancing With Mr. D.
Through The Lonely Nights
Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)
Angie

Side 2:
Silver Train
Hide Your Love
Crisscross
Can You Hear The Music
Star Star

It was pretty late in the day that the third song on each side were replaced by 'Coming Down Again' and 'Winter'.

'Through The Lonely Nights' of course ended up being released as the b-side to 'Its only rock n roll' a year later.

Staggering to think that 'Winter' - by far the best song on the album IMO and one of the greatest things they've ever done - almost didn't make the cut.

I wonder if there was a bit of internal politics going on as one of the two songs that got dropped had Taylor getting a songwriting credit. 'Winter' is a song that Keith doesn't even play on (maybe thats why it almost missed out) and it ended up replacing a song that Taylor co-wrote.

This kind of thing was certainly an issue in later years when Woody was co-writing songs that ending up  either on b-sides or having the meaningless 'Inspiration by ..' credit included.

To say I'm excited about this is an understatement. That 4-LP set is quite intriguing with Brussels Affair included. That's going to be an early Christmas present.

Andy Johns mixed the original album. So basically he was in competition that summer with his older brother?

The i-tunes version of this release lists 'track 11' and 'track 12' at the end of disc 2

So maybe those two tracks you mention will be available as a download but only available as a physical release in Japan?

I read Glyn Johns' book.  My memory is that Glyn had a rough experience on GHS and departed to work on someone else's album, drafting his brother/apprentice Andy to attempt the mixes.

Ah, that explains it, thanks.

Christ, that must have been a wild period. Those sessions pretty much almost finished Jimmy Miller off as well. He never worked with them again after it.

At least Glyn was back on board for the next two studio albums.
