I think its simply a case of the two vocals on '100 years ago' being recorded a few months apart (the demo is probably Nov/Dec 72 and the final overdubs were done May-June 1973). Its not uncommon for lyrics to have a few rewrites or tweaks done before they're finished.

Glyn Johns' mixes of 'Silver Train' 'Dancing with Mr D' and 'Heartbreaker' also have a few minor lyric changes, so they appear to be different takes (at least in parts).

I believe this may be the first time in 22 years of this message board that someone has used the expression temps perdu in a post.  Well done.

Shoddy journalism by Zoe Ball. She interviewed Mick and Jimmy Page, and both said Ronnie Wood's basement, yet she says: "your basement" to Keith.

Wouldn't mind hearing more of these.

After listening the whole new stuff, including those remixes, let me tell ya... If I was the one to select GHS in 10 tracks, I would select the 10 of the original version (really) but "Can you hear the music?" would be the one in the Japanese version

The original GHS is perfect

Let me get this right. Someone actually spent time composing an article explaining why a song that says the world 'fucker' about 50 times in the space of three minutes DIDN'T get radio airplay?

Keith is also claiming now that he wrote the riff of 'Satisfaction' in London, after spending 55 years telling every interviewer that it happened in a hotel in Florida.

The EU edition apparently doesn't have the two Scarlet remixes, or the extra Glyn Johns tracks, on CD 2.

These are two extra Glyn mixes, replacing the pointless remixes of Scarlet taking up space on the US release. (Actually, one of the Scarlet remixes is worth hearing but not essential.)  So the Japan release has four Glyn mixes.

Again, when Glyn did these mixes is a mystery, as they're not noted in his autobiography among the other scattered Stones track work post-Sticky Fingers that he mentions.

From Gazza:

"Today the Rolling Stones hit No1 on the UK album chart with Goats Head Soup 2020, making it their 13th Number One album and setting a new record as the first band in UK chart history to hit the top of the charts with an album across six different decades! It’s only rock’n’roll but I like it

Number one album in six different decades (had ‘Forty Licks’  sold about 12 more copies of in it’s first week, it would have been seven !)"

The instrumental Dancing With Mr. D gives me a raging erection.

Known or unverified outtakes from this era include :

After Muddy & Charlie
Brown Leaves
Criss Cross

English Rose
Fast Talking, Slow Walking

First Thing
Four and In
Give Us A Break
Jamaica
Man-Eating Woman
Miami
Separately

Short & Curlies *
Through The Lonely Nights **
Tops ***

Waiting On A Friend ***

Windmill

You Should Have Seen Her Ass

Zabadoo

* later re-recorded for 'IORR'
** released as b-side of 'IORR' single in 1974
*** reworked/overdubbed and released on 'Tattoo You'

Of the clips above, only 'Criss Cross' sounds like a finished take. There may of course be uncirculating finished versions of some of the others although no doubt the album that gets released will feature a bit of historical revisionism as well as a few overdubs.

Some updates on those outtake song titles

"Four And In" later became 'Dancing with Mr D' (maybe its the instrumental thats on the new release?). Its actually re-titled 'Dancing with Mr Dee' on the master reel tape boxes.

The working title for 'Winter' seems to be 'First Thing Sans Keith' (he doesn't play on this track, after all)

'Through the lonely nights' was originally called 'Through the Lonely Hours' and '100 Years' was the first title for '100 Years Ago'

Yes, what I meant was I wouldnt mind hearing the full album remixed by Glyn, as opposed by a few songs

Most of these remixes appear to also have minor vocal or lyrical changes from the original releases, so they appear to be (at least partially) different takes.

Gripes about the overpricing of the super deluxe packaging aside (which is standard practice now I guess), I think based purely on musical content, this is the best of the four re-issues they've put out so far.  The first three albums they reissued were my favourite three Stones albums anyway and were hard to improve on, but this one elevates GHS up another notch.

Great music! It's all really good. The redo's, the updates, the new stuff just fabulous. I think I hear some 2020 Keith backing vocals in there. Crushing it at the pool!

My memory was a bit off.  Its hard to keep track as the Stones released so many albums that decade.  Grin

It was actually 'A Bigger Bang' that was outsold by about 11 copies by James Blunt's 'Back to Bedlam' - an album which had been already out for about a year and which went back to the top spot.

EMI made the stupid mistake of releasing 'Forty Licks' the same week as the 'ELV1S: 30 No. 1 Hits' - a record which subsequently went five times platinum in the UK. Had they put it out a week earlier, it would have probably pipped Paul Weller's newly issued 'Illumination' (a Gold album) to the top spot.
