Film tells story of Texas saxophonist who rolled with the Stones

To have read Rolling Stones' guitarist Keith Richards' 2010 memoir "Life" is to have gotten some view of the inner machinations of the Rolling Stones, albeit told by a not-entirely-reliable narrator. Among the takeaways from "Life" is that Richards' favored running buddy for decades wasn't one of his core Stones bandmates, but rather a wild saxophonist from a Texas town near Lubbock.

Bobby Keys died at 70 in 2014. But not before leaving his musical thumbprint all over recordings by the Stones, Marvin Gaye, Eric Clapton, Barbra Streisand, Dr. John, Joe Cocker, three of the four Beatles and scores of others. He was also a regular collaborator with Joe Ely, a kindred drifting spirit from Lubbock.

Keys' remarkable life is the subject of a new documentary, "Every Night's a Saturday Night," which makes its Houston premiere tonight at 14 Pews. The film will include an introduction and post-screening talk-back by Jeffrey Brown, an Austin-based producer whose work includes several music-related documentaries as well as "No No: A Dockumentary," a wonderful film about MLB pitcher Dock Ellis, who -- according to lore -- pitched a no hitter while navigating an LSD trip.

"Every Night's a Saturday Night" traces Keys' path from the little town of Slaton, where he fell under the spell of the music made by Lubbock legend Buddy Holly. Keys was just 16 when Holly died, but he was already treading a path music by then had cut for him to follow, working with teen idol Bobby Vee.

Fans of the Rolling Stones' masterpiece "Exile on Main Street" can hear some of his best-known work. He's also prominently featured on the hit "Brown Sugar."

Keys' story raced upward and fell downward, which made him a natural subject for a film. Before his death he reunited with the Stones for some shows.

He died in late 2014 of cancer.

More information on the film can be found here.

“What rap did that was impressive was to show there are so many tone-deaf people out there,” he says. “All they need is a drum beat and somebody yelling over it and they’re happy. There’s an enormous market for people who can’t tell one note from another.” - Keef

Someone at our FaceBook Page is saying that this has been on DVD for years, as far as I know it was only the book

I searched for a DVD with the same name and couldn't find any... Is it true that it is already released as a DVD?
