"Taylor Swift has started ‘drawing up plays’ for the Kansas City Chiefs, according to QB Patrick Mahomes."

By: Issy Ronald and Jacob Lev, CNN; September 4th, 2024.

" While Taylor Swift is on the bleachers watching her boyfriend Travis Kelce play for the Kansas City Chiefs, she has already started drawing up plays for the team, according to quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

“She’s really interested in football and she asks a lot of great questions,” Mahomes told NBC’s Chris Simms with a smile in a recent interview. “She started drawing up plays, we might have to put one in.”

Ever since Swift began dating Chiefs tight end Kelce last year, it has placed a spotlight on the NFL, drawing new audiences to the league as two staples of American pop culture collided with another.

Roughly 123.4 million average viewers tuned in to watch the Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl in February – the most for any US television broadcast since the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969.

“I think it’s been cool to see the girls and the women that have really embraced watching football,” Mahomes said. “I know being a girl dad, how cool it is for me to see these little girls – these daughters – and how much they’re loving to spend time with their dad, watching football.

“And then meeting Taylor, realizing how genuine and cool she is. I think that’s been special to me because she’s, like you said, the most famous person in the world, she could not be.”

Even before Swift’s relationship with Kelce, the pop star was a football fan, referencing the Philadelphia Eagles in one of her songs and wearing their sweater while walking around New York City.

Mahomes was also quick to highlight the influence of Chiefs coach Andy Reid on their offensive play, having guided the team to three Super Bowl wins in five years.

“Obviously he’s one of the best coaches of all time, especially of offensive minds,” Mahomes said. “The way he’s able to continue to bring us new plays and bring us new motions and stuff to pique our interest and keep us in every single week of the season is one of a kind.”

Mahomes, Kelce and the Chiefs begin their quest for a famous three-peat Thursday against the Baltimore Ravens at Arrowhead Stadium."

<  ------------- Gonna Be A Biggin'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! " CHIEFS " !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:

https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/news/how-to-watch-baltimore-ravens-vs-kansas-city-...

"How to watch Baltimore Ravens vs Kansas City Chiefs: TV/Live stream info for tonight’s NFL Season Opener."

" The 2024 NFL Season kicks off on tonight at Arrowhead Stadium with a Baltimore Ravens vs Kansas City Chiefs matchup, which will be a rematch of last season’s AFC Championship game. Live coverage begins at 7:00PM ET with an NFL Kickoff Special edition of Football Night in America on NBC and Peacock. Then on Friday, September 6, history will be made as the Green Bay Packers take on the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL’s first-ever game in Brazil. Coverage for that game begins at 7:00 PM ET exclusively on Peacock.

Kansas City Chiefs:

For the second year in a row, the NFL season opens up in Chiefs Kingdom, but this year Kansas City has one mission on its mind: becoming the first team in NFL history to win three straight Super Bowls.

The two-time defending Super Bowl champions have been building a legacy in their kingdom with consistency being a key pillar. The team has won 8 straight AFC West division titles, which is the second-longest streak in NFL history. With Patrick Mahomes as the starter, the Chiefs have reached 6 consecutive AFC Championship games and made four Super Bowls in the last 5 seasons, winning 3 of those 4 appearances.

Mahomes became the fastest player to reach 25,000 passing yards last season. He has a total of 73 wins, 28,140 passing yards, and 219 passing touchdowns which is more than any other QB in the league since 2018.

Will Taylor Swift be at the Baltimore Ravens vs Kansas City Chiefs game?

TE Travis Kelce had a remarkable year on and off the field. He led Kansas City in receiving yards (984), receptions (93), and targets (121), and his girlfriend Taylor Swift was in the audience 13 times last season, watching him shine. The 14-time Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter has no shows scheduled for September so there is a chance that she could be at Thursday’s Baltimore Ravens vs Kansas City Chiefs game.

How to watch Baltimore Ravens vs Kansas City Chiefs:

When: Tonight, Thursday, September 5

Where: Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, MO

Time: Live coverage begins at 7:00 PM ET with Football Night in America

TV: NBC

Live Stream: Peacock

Mahomes can find ‘sweet spot’ with Receivers."

" Give blood
But you may find that blood is enough
Give blood
And there are some who'll say it's not enough
Give blood
But don't expect to ever see reward
Give blood
You can give it all but still you're asked for more

Give blood
But it could cost more than your dignity
Give blood
Parade your pallor in iniquity
Give blood
They will cry and say they're in our debt
Give blood
But then they'll sigh and they will soon forget

We're heading for the day of blessings, I'm telling ya
It's all building up to something
Something that can only be redeemed with fire

So give love and keep blood between brothers
Give love and keep blood between brothers
Give love and keep blood between brothers
Give love and keep blood between brothers

Give blood
But you may find that blood is not enough
Give blood
And there are some who'll say it's not enough
Give blood
But don't expect to ever see reward
Give blood
You can give it all and still you'll be asked for more

So give love and keep blood between brothers
Give love and keep blood between brothers
Give love and keep blood between brothers
Give love and keep blood between brothers

Give your love and keep blood between brothers
Give your love and keep blood between brothers
Give your love and keep blood between brothers
Give love, give love, give love and keep blood between brothers
Give love, your love, and keep blood between brothers"

" Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift head to US Open final in NYC - with Chiefs star's teammate Patrick Mahomes also in town for Jannik Sinner vs Taylor Fritz."

" Taylor Swift and Brittany Mahomes are back together at the US Open final - three days after sitting apart for the Kansas City Chiefs' opening NFL fixture.

A few weeks after Brittany, 29, liked a Donald Trump posts on Instagram, Taylor, 34, sparked talk a potential rift with her BFF after choosing not to sit together for the Chiefs' win over the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday.

Yet amid fears for their friendship, Swift proved there's no bad blood between them at Flushing Meadow on Sunday.

Both Chiefs WAGs were spotted at the US Open final along with partners Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes, with the four friends in the house for Jannik Sinner's clash against Taylor Fritz at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Brittany and Taylor looked in fine spirits as they watched Sinner, the current world No 1, lock horns with American hopeful Fritz for the last Grand Slam title of the year.

Unusually, the wife of Kansas City's superstar quarterback and his teammate Travis appeared to be wearing matching Gucci outfits on the day.

DailyMail.com revealed at the end of last month that Taylor and Brittany have implemented measures to save their friendship amid mounting speculation that the the latter's support of Trump could cause an explosive feud with the singer.

Fans predicted a huge fallout could be on the cards after Mahomes sparked controversy for liking multiple posts in support of the Republican presidential candidate, 78, ahead of the upcoming election, seemingly going against the views of Swift.

However, a source has exclusively told DailyMail.com that they 'respect that they have different views' and have made a 'pact' to avoid discussing politics.

'Taylor is not going to be written into this anti-Brittany narrative because they have made a pact to not discuss politics,' they said.

'They both know it can tear apart friendships and they respect that they have different views.'

'It was an unspoken rule for everyone to avoid politics at Taylor's home in Rhode Island,' they said. 'The topic was off limits.

'It is not only Taylor who has not spoken out in strong support for either candidate, but Travis as well. They know how much influence they have.'

It has also emerged that Swift and Mahomes chose to sit apart for the Chiefs vs Ravens game this week because they wanted different experiences watching the NFL opener.

The BFFs sat together for multiple games last season and spent time with each other in Amsterdam earlier this year when the pop megastar was on tour.

Yet according to The Sun there is no animosity between them whatsoever. 'They are very good friends and they were so excited to go to the game, but they had different plans as it happens sometimes,' a source was quoted as saying.

'Brittany is a family woman, and Taylor likes to enjoy the game sometimes like it’s a party. They felt like they were in a different vibe for the first game of the season. They did hang out for a bit before and after the game while waiting for Patrick and Travis.

'But Brittany preferred for the first game of the season to be in a suite with family and the kids, in a bit more of a "low key" vibe. Taylor wanted more of a ‘party and drinks vibe’ for the game and enjoy it differently.

'There are absolutely zero tensions between them, they love and respect each other a lot, they were just wanting a different kind of vibe for the first game of the season at home.'

Mahomes shared a selfie from the field with her daughter Sterling before the game, while Swift was filmed throughout the game in the stands with Kelce's friends and his parents, Ed and Donna.

Taylor and Travis jetted to New York for the weekend after the game and were pictured at a Brooklyn pizza joint on Friday night."

<  -------------- "Shareef [ Emperor Xi ] don't like it"  .......  Better Start Drinking Early Tonight!!!!!!!!!:

https://www.reuters.com/world/german-warships-pass-through-taiwan-strait-this-mo...

"German warships to pass through Taiwan Strait this month, Spiegel says."

"FRANKFURT, Sept 7 (Reuters) - Two German warships are set to pass through the sensitive Taiwan Strait in the middle of this month, becoming the first German naval vessels to do so in 22 years, Spiegel magazine reported on Saturday.

Reuters reported last month that the warships were awaiting orders from Berlin to sail the Strait, prompting a rebuke to Germany from Beijing.

Spiegel cited unspecified sources as saying Beijing would not be formally notified of the German ships' passage to emphasise that Berlin views the trip as normal.

Germany's defence ministry declined to comment.

While the United States and other nations, including Canada, have sent warships through the strait in recent weeks, it would be the German navy's first passage since 2002.

China claims sovereignty over democratically governed Taiwan and says it has jurisdiction over the nearly 180-km (110-mile) wide waterway in-between. Taiwan strongly objects to China’s sovereignty claims and says only the island’s people can decide their future.

The Taiwan Strait is a major trade route through which about half of global container ships pass, and both the United States and Taiwan say it is an international waterway.

The commander of the German naval task group, Rear Admiral Axel Schulz, told Reuters last month that such a passage would demonstrate Germany's commitment to a rules-based order and the peaceful solution of territorial conflicts.

The two German vessels are taking part in exercises in the region with France, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and the United States.

Sailings through the waterway by foreign warships are regularly condemned, opens new tab by Beijing, which says they "undermine peace and stability" in the region.

Germany, for which both China and Taiwan are major trade partners, has joined other Western nations in expanding its military presence in the region in response to Beijing's growing territorial ambitions."

" Now the king told the boogie men
"You have to let that raga drop"
The oil down the desert way
Has been shaken to the top
The Sheik he drove his Cadillac
He went a-cruisin' down the ville
The Muezzin was a-standin'
On the radiator grille, ow

Shareef don't like it
Rockin' the Casbah, rock the Casbah
The Shareef don't like it
Rockin' the Casbah, rock the Casbah

By order of the prophet
We'll ban that boogie sound
Degenerate the faithful
With that crazy Casbah sound
But the Bedouin they brought out an electric camel drum
The local guitar picker got his guitar pickin' thumb
As soon as the Shareef had cleared the square
They began to wail

Shareef don't like it
Rockin' the Casbah, rock the Casbah
Shareef don't like it
Rockin' the Casbah, rock the Casbah

Now, over at the temple
Oh, they really pack 'em in
The in-crowd say it's cool
To dig this chanting thing
But as the wind changed direction
And the temple band took five
The crowd caught a whiff
Of that crazy Casbah jive

Shareef don't like it
Rockin' the Casbah, rock the Casbah
Shareef don't like it
Rockin' the Casbah, rock the Casbah

The king called up his jet fighters
He said, "You better earn your pay
Drop your bombs between the minarets
Down the Casbah way"
As soon as the Shareef was chauffeured outta there
The jet pilots tuned to the cockpit radio blare
Soon as the Shareef was outta their hair
The jet pilots wail

Shareef don't like it
Rockin' the Casbah, rock the Casbah
Shareef don't like it
Rockin' the Casbah, rock the Casbah

Shareef don't like it, he thinks it's not kosher
Rockin' the Casbah, rock the Casbah
Shareef don't like it, fundamentally can't take it
Rockin' the Casbah, Rock the Casbah

Shareef don't like it, you know he really hates it
Rockin' the Casbah, rock the Casbah
Shareef don't like it, really, really hates it"

"Opinion  Ukraine is bleeding out. It cannot fight forever."

"Supporting Ukraine “as long as it takes” does not match the reality of this conflict."

By:  David Ignatius

"KYIV — The terrible cost of Russia’s continuing assault on Ukraine is viscerally clear at a military rehabilitation center on the outskirts of this city. Soldiers there describe how their bodies were shattered on the front lines. And they’re the lucky ones who survived.

Alexei was trying to hold his position at Pokrovsk, the scene of some of this year’s heaviest fighting, when a drone dropped a grenade near him. His left leg and right hand were nearly severed, attached by thin threads of tissue but now mended. Nikolai lost his left leg in Kharkiv, another Russian target. He waited 18 hours to be evacuated because of drone attacks. Dima lost both legs when his vehicle was hit by a drone in Pokrovsk. The four soldiers traveling with him were killed.

I met these wounded soldiers at a recovery center funded by a Ukrainian businessman named Victor Pinchuk, one of 15 similar facilities he has established around the country. Like soldiers everywhere, they’re kids, with sleeves of tattoos and T-shirts promoting heavy metal bands. But they got old in a hurry. Talking with a half-dozen of them Friday, I heard the same grim account of what’s at stake in this war. As Alexei put it: “We don’t have a choice. If we stop fighting, we’ll stop existing.”

Listening to their stories, you realize that Ukraine is bleeding out. Its will to fight is as strong as ever, but its army is exhausted by a ceaseless drone war that’s unlike anything in the history of combat. The Biden administration’s rubric of support — “as long as it takes” — simply doesn’t match the reality of this conflict. Ukraine doesn’t have enough soldiers to fight an indefinite war of attrition. It needs to escalate to be strong enough to reach a decent settlement.

That’s the lesson I took from a visit here to attend a conference sponsored by Pinchuk’s group YES, which stands for Yalta European Strategy. It was founded 20 years ago to encourage Ukraine’s integration with the West. Now it’s trying to prevent the country’s destruction. The title of the meeting was “The Necessity to Win.” But the underlying message was that, without more firepower, Ukraine might be forced to settle on Vladimir Putin’s terms to halt his brutal onslaught.

The YES gathering was unlike any conference I’ve attended. It was a Davos-like meeting of prominent politicians and diplomats, featuring a passionate address by President Volodymyr Zelensky. But on the wall behind the speakers was a grim display of snapshots of dozens of dead soldiers — some bright-eyed, others haggard, all of them gone. And the most powerful presentations weren’t from the big shots but from soldiers who had come in from the front.

“We are tired,” said a drone unit commander named Serhii Varakin, who has been fighting Russian aggression in eastern Ukraine for more than eight years. His face, ringed with fatigue, was a portrait of the stress of relentless combat. The conference’s most emotional moment came when this hardened warrior told the audience: “I should have had a family, wonderful children, taking pictures by the barbecue, but now I take pictures on the front line.” The prolonged applause brought tears to Varakin’s eyes.

During a break from the conference, I visited a Ukrainian friend named Sergiy Koshman, a free-wheeling intellectual from Kharkiv and onetime civil society activist. Now he’s working to design weapons. At our last meeting, a few months after Russia’s full-scale invasion, he had described an almost giddy sense of national solidarity, with young activists talking about a mountaintop festival to defy Russian threats of using tactical nuclear weapons. But that mood has changed.

“We thought that once we showed solidarity, Russia would back off,” he told me. “Now it seems the war could last for decades.” He described a “radicalization” of intellectual life, in which the core principle had become: “We have to kill as many Russians as possible and find innovative ways to do it.” The war has transformed the country. “It’s so kinetic, when ballistic missiles are raining down on you daily. It’s a different reality.”

This cultural mood was vividly embodied by a soldier named Yarnya Chornohus. She’s a poet
when she isn’t at the front, and she was a striking presence onstage: movie-star beautiful, with a snake tattooed on her right arm, the fangs open at her wrist, and the Ukrainian military emblem on her left arm. She said she had instructed her daughter to be ready to fight someday. As a poet, she said, she had learned the power of her verse comes from her experience of war.

A recurring theme of the conference was that President Joe Biden should remove current limits on Ukraine’s use of American ATACMS long-range missiles to strike deep into Russia. A procession of speakers said Biden should stop worrying about the danger of Russian escalation — and implied he was weak for even considering the issue. That strikes me as wrong; a primary responsibility of any American president is to avoid war with a nuclear superpower.

But I came away from the conference thinking the United States should take more risks to help Ukraine. It matters how this war ends. If Putin prevails, it will harm the interests of America and Europe for decades.

“I have no announcement to make” on the ATACMS issue, national security adviser Jake Sullivan said in a video interview with the group. That’s fine with me. Don’t announce anything. Leave Putin guessing. But if Russia’s surge continues, Putin’s bases within ATACMS range should be legitimate targets. He’s the one crossing the “red line” every day he continues his unprovoked aggression.

Zelensky, clad as always in a green combat shirt, said the proper range for U.S.-supplied weapons should be “long enough to act as a game changer and make Russia seek peace.” He’ll meet Biden in a week in New York to make that plea in person. I hope Biden says yes, privately.

If Zelensky is wise, he’ll bring along Oleksander Budko, a wounded veteran who spoke to the YES group. Though he lost both of his legs in combat, the boyishly handsome Budko was recently chosen as “Ukraine’s most desirable man” on a national television show. That’s the spirit that sustains Ukraine in this dark moment, and it’s moving to see.

But it’s not sentimentality that underlies deeper American support for Ukraine, but U.S. national interest."

" China’s $6.5 Trillion Loss Should Have Xi Jinping Looking In The Mirror."

By: William Pesek

" When Chinese stocks lose an amount roughly equivalent to Japan’s entire market, it might be time for President Xi Jinping to do something about it. And preferably something new.

The $6.5 trillion that’s been erased from mainland bourses since a 2021 peak is an epically large price to pay for Beijing’s policies these last few years. From Covid-19 lockdowns to tech company crackdowns to glacial efforts to stabilize a crashing property market, Xi’s Communist Party hasn’t done Asia’s biggest economy any favors.

Or, for that matter, investors keen to harness Chinese growth. Among major economies, there’s no reform trade more tantalizing than China’s. If only Team Xi would kick it into a higher gear.

If successful, a pivot from state-enterprise dominance to a model that prioritizes private-sector innovation will be one of history’s most lucrative narratives for investors. Yet it remains too big an “if” for comfort in the Xi era.

At the moment, much of the chatter is about the need for greater stimulus from Xi’s government and the People’s Bank of China. As deflationary forces intensify, calls for fiscal pump-priming and monetary easing are growing in volume.

Admittedly, bigger efforts to boost gross domestic product might gain more traction than the untold billions of dollars authorities and state-backed funds have spent putting a floor under stocks in Shanghai and Shenzhen.

Yet none of these efforts would reap greater dividends than Xi getting serious about the reforms he’s promised for more than a decade now.

Stimulus and massive stock buying are mere Band-Aids. You’d think that Xi’s inner circle would notice by now that China’s big losses are in stark contrast with spectacular equity booms from New York to Tokyo. But then, Beijing officialdom might have to entertain the possibility that Xiconomics is falling flat with the biggest of the global big money.

Xi, it’s often said, is China’s most powerful leader since Mao Zedong. But sadly, he too often prioritizes deepening his control over the party and municipalities rather than economic modernization.

Yes, yes, we were all wrong 25 years ago about China becoming more western, more tolerant of free speech and increasingly transparent. Those ideas that the internet, World Trade Organization rules and capitalist euphoria would have Xi’s party on the run? We were so quaint back then.

Perhaps the best bookend here may be then-U.S. President Bill Clinton’s October 1997 trip to Beijing. China’s leader at the time, Jiang Zemin, had the confidence to do a live press conference with Clinton in Beijing, televised around the globe.

It seemed like a game-changer moment. International economists and journalists — myself included — were convinced it signaled a new, more open and swashbuckling China. In 2002, Jiang passed that baton to Hu Jintao, who largely kept China on autopilot until 2012, when Xi rose to power.

Early on, Xi talked a great game of letting market forces play a “decisive” role in Beijing decision making. But then, reform ambitions seemed to fall away. Many blame the market crash of 2015, an event that had Xi’s party reverting to a defensive crouch.

In May 2015, epochal change seemed on path. That was when Xi unveiled his audacious “Made in China 2025” scheme. It aimed to morph the economy into a high-tech Mecca for semiconductors, renewable energy, electric vehicles, biotechnology, aerospace, artificial intelligence, robotics and green infrastructure.

But two months later, a mini-crisis arrived. Between July and August of 2015, Shanghai stocks plunged more than 30% in three weeks. The slow pace of upgrades — and vague details about regaining reformist momentum— irked investors, who fled en masse.

The chaos saw Beijing pivot to old-economy tactics: cutting interest rates, shelving initial public offerings, suspending trading in thousands of listed companies, capital controls, increased leverage and letting mainlanders use apartments as collateral to buy shares.

Once the dust settled, Xi’s team throttled back on plans for structural change. Fast forward nine years, Made in China 2025 remain a work in progress, at best. And foreign investors’ ability to bet on Chinese shares has far outpaced moves to build a more dynamic economic system and better capital markets.

The slow pace of increasing liquidity and transparency, strengthening corporate governance, building a trusted credit rating system, devising robust hedging tools and reining in a sprawling state sector is now dawning on investors. So much so that Chinese stocks have lost the combined gross domestic product of the United Kingdom and France.

The lesson here is that Xi must treat the underlying causes of China’s economic funk, not just the symptoms. As Japan taught us, throwing money at an economy traumatized by plunging property values and deflationary pressures isn’t enough.

Given China’s weak price dynamics, some well-targeted stimulus is understandable. But it’s far more important that Beijing go big on leveling playing fields, recalibrating growth engines and building a trusted market infrastructure. And with household demand lagging, it’s time Beijing created robust social safety nets to prod consumers to spend more and save less.

If not, China’s doddering may lead to even bigger stock losses that revive debates about whether the place really is “uninvestable.” Xi has the power to change the narrative -– and stop the bleeding. With any luck, this latest bout of market turmoil reminds Team Xi that time isn’t on Beijing’s side."

" JD Souther, Who Wrote Hits for the Eagles, Dies at 78."

"A central figure in the Southern California rock scene of the 1970s, he later had a regular role on the TV show “Nashville.”

By:  Clay Risen

" JD Souther, who crafted many of the biggest hits to come out of the Southern California country-rock scene of the 1970s, including for the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor, and who later played a wizened music industry veteran — in other words, a version of himself — on the hit television show “Nashville,” died on Tuesday at his home in Sandia Park, N.M., in the hills east of Albuquerque. He was 78.

His death was announced on his website. A cause was not provided.

Beginning in the late 1960s, Mr. Souther was part of a coterie of musicians around Los Angeles who found themselves circling the same sort of peaceful, easy, country-inflected rock sound. They played at the same venues — among them the Troubadour, the famous West Hollywood nightclub — and lived and partied in the same canyons in the Hollywood Hills.

Mr. Souther played with or wrote for most of them. Though he was brought up on jazz and classical music, he easily mastered the country-rock vernacular on songs like “Faithless Love” and “White Rhythm and Blues,” for Ms. Ronstadt; “The Heart of the Matter,” which he wrote with Don Henley; and “Her Town Too,” a collaboration with Mr. Taylor that they sang as a duet.

He also played a central role in the formation of the Eagles, encouraging Ms. Ronstadt, his girlfriend at the time, to hire his friend Glenn Frey as part of her backup band. After Mr. Henley joined, he and Mr. Frey decided to form their own group, along with two other members of Ms. Ronstadt’s ensemble, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner.

Mr. Souther was almost the fifth Eagle: He joined the quartet for an afternoon tryout at the Troubadour, but he decided that the band was already perfect, and that he’d rather write for them.

A string of songs followed, many of them hits and most of them written with Mr. Henley and Mr. Frey, including “The Best of My Love,” “Victim of Love,” “Heartache Tonight” and “New Kid in Town.”

“There was definitely a period of time where people would occasionally say to me, ‘Doesn’t it piss you off that the Eagles have these big hits off your songs?’” he told the website Creative Independent in 2019. “I would usually start saying, ‘Would you like to see the checks?’”

Early on, he played in a band with Mr. Frey called Longbranch Pennywhistle, and later in the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band, with Chris Hillman of the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers and Richie Furay of Buffalo Springfield and Poco. All along he maintained a solo career, and he finally had a hit of his own with “You’re Only Lonely,” the title track of his 1979 album, which reached No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

It was a banner year for him: The Eagles’ final No. 1 hit, “Heartache Tonight,” which he wrote with Mr. Henley, Mr. Frey and Bob Seger, peaked that fall.

Afterward, Mr. Souther largely retired from music. The Los Angeles scene was moving away from his style of music, as was the industry in general.

“I had done what I wanted to do musically,” he told Rolling Stone in 2012. “And I just thought to myself, ‘All the men in my family worked until they died, and I’m going to take a few years off and build a great house and have a life.’”

By the late 1980s, he had taken up acting: He had a small role as a piano player in Steven Spielberg’s 1989 film, “Always,” and he played an environmental activist in several episodes of the TV show “Thirtysomething.”

He also returned to recording and performing, this time with a jazzy style that brought him back to his roots. He recorded four studio albums and a live record; his most recent album, “Tenderness,” was released in 2015. He had been scheduled to perform with the singer-songwriter Karla Bonoff in Folsom, Calif., and Napa, Calif., later this month, and he also had a series of solo concert dates booked into 2025.

In recent years he was better known, at least to younger fans, for his screen presence. In 2012 he joined the cast of “Nashville,” playing a veteran music producer, Watty White — a character that drew heavily on his own experiences in the industry. He appeared during the first season, and his character was popular enough that the showrunners brought him back for the fifth season.

John David Souther was born on Nov. 2, 1945, in Detroit, though when he was very young his family moved first to Dallas, and then to Amarillo, Texas, where he grew up.

His father, John Souther, sang for a big band under the stage name Johnny Warren, a job that kept him constantly on the road. His mother, Loty (Finley) Souther, eventually protested, and after the family moved to her home state, Texas, Mr. Souther ran a music store.

The store became a cradle for JD’s musical career, the place where he was exposed to a wide variety of styles and performers in between helping his father sweep the floors and stock the record bins. He took up the violin when he was 8 and then the clarinet, tenor saxophone and drums.

He briefly attended Amarillo College but left to pursue music with his first band, the Cinders. He moved to New York, then Florida, and finally Los Angeles, where he met Ms. Ronstadt and Mr. Frey.

He married Alexandra Sliwin in 1969; they divorced in 1972. In addition to Ms. Ronstadt, he later dated Stevie Nicks and the singer-songwriter Judee Sill, who is said to have written her song “Jesus Was a Cross Maker” about him.

Another marriage, to Sarah Nicholson, also ended in divorce. Survivors include two sisters, Susan Burt and Shari Smeaton.

Mr. Souther moved to Nashville in 2001 and later to rural New Mexico. He insisted he was happy that his songs were more famous than he was.

“I like the fact that I don’t get made up before I go out of the house or check to be sure my hair looks great,” he told Variety in 2010. “I don’t really want to be stopped when I’m in the grocery store and have somebody pay a bunch of attention to me. It’ll be nice if that happens, but it’s not what I want.”
