Mott reached succes with "all the Young dudes" a song David Bowie composed, the band was abou to bereakup and David saved giving the songf for them

Mott were a "footnote"? Uhm, mate - they were a tremendous band, and a huge deal in the mid-'70s. Check out any album. I think you'll be very turned on.

And Dale Griffin (aka Buffin) was a monster drummer; he worked for many years as a BBC music engineer who's work can be heard on hundreds of bands 'BBC Sessions' recordings - which recordings are often thought by the bands themselves to be better than their contemporary official albums/singles.
