Just came across this today.
Another concert that should be released rather than the retreads being pushed lately.

I watched Gimme Shelter a few nights ago. I'd read and heard about Altamont (I was born in 1971 so it was before my time) but never seen the footage. I couldn't believe it when someone called in defending the Hells Angels killing Meredith Hunter. Seriously? You'd already disarmed the dude. Sure, he was still fighting but there was a lot more of you guys than him. How the hell could it be necessary to not only beat the shit out of him but also knife him?

Btw, is there another link for this? Some of us don't have a facebook account.

Oh, believe me you can believe that, that "DUDE" would defend the Angels. It was Sonny Barger, head honcho for the Oakland chapter; shit! He virtually gave birth to the Angels.
Everybody connected to Altamont was to blame, greed, promotion, egos, lunatic hippies, and Angels. Who honestly believed that  would work? That Dick Carter makes me even madder, as swans around the stage telling Cutler to keep promoting, "Dick Carter's Altamont Speedway".

I'm not so sure Hunter was fully disarmed:

At this point, footage from the documentary shows Hunter (seen in the film in a lime-green suit) drawing what appears to be a long-barreled black .22 caliber revolver from his jacket and pointing it in the air. The film shows what might be an orange flash at the end of the pistol in one frame. Due to the film's low fidelity, it is impossible to determine whether the flash is a gunshot, a reflection, or a film defect. The Angels did not report any discharged cartridges in Hunter's pistol. The film then shows Hells Angel Alan Passaro, armed with a knife, running at Hunter from the side, parrying the gun with his left hand and stabbing him with his right.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Meredith_Hunter

...

...

If the Wikipedia article is correct, Hunter still had the gun in his hand as Passaro stabbed him.
Passaro's "parrying" of the gun implies that Hunter still had control of the gun, but was simply deflected so as to protect Passaro.

I'm not a legal professional, but if I found myself in the same circumstances as Passaro's, I would want to kill someone waving a gun in a crowd before he killed me or anyone else.

Your last point about what to do when confronted with an armed gunman, spot on. Look at the Leytenstone tube station incident just days ago. Yes I know that was a knife, but same deal. Jump the fucker, 3,4 people, beat the crap out of them.
No! Apparantely we should 1. Stand back.
2. Throw people; ya know women, children in front of us. And,
3. Film the whole sorry episode on a cell phone.
Maybe, just maybe, that Angel saved more lives than he took. Passaro's behaviour after the stabbing is what sullies his defense, That's the layman's view. The common sense view, in my Luddite's opinion.

Yeah I saw the footage in Gimme Shelter. It's really impossible to say from the blurry film. And everyone knows nowadays that eyewitness accounts are notoriously unreliable.

Ah, I didn't know who that was on the phone. See what I mean about it being before my time? There's so much context I miss because of that.

With that said, I've long heard that up until Altamont a lot of people thought the Hell's Angels were being maligned by the establishment. They were bad boys but most of the hippies didn't think they were that bad. You have to recall that this was a time when a lot of the older generation were sure that hippies stoned on pot were extremely dangerous.

It's sad.  The guy went to a concert with his girlfriend.  He just wanted to listen to some music and enjoy himself.  He didn't deserve that.  Who ever thought of hiring the Hell's Angels as "security" was an idiot!

Did anyone ever get charged with the crime?  I mean there is actual video of the incident!  You can see the perpetrators on camera!

By the time Passaro was identified as the killer he was already doing time for another misdemenour. So; added porridge. But although I am not taking sides, as I said yesterday, if he was going just to enjoy a concert, why go dressed as a Harlem pimp, brandishing a weapon. You pull a piece, you open a door, and you must accept whatever dreadful consequences come through. But yes, Alan Passaro was charged with the murder, but he only got added time because it was seen as self defense. That's when the Angels took out a contract on the Stones.
In his book , ' YCAGWYW' Sam Cutler alleges he met with certain Angels in the aftermath, promised to pay their court expenses, and then without handing over any lolly, did a quick bunk back to Johnny Old.

Who's idea was the Angels for security? The Grateful Dead, and particularly Rock (Scum) Scully. Who promptly laid it all back in the Stones laps.

Exactly! Pimp, or for our British contingent; ponce attire( I mean; lime green in 1969, out in the middle of fuck knows where), with a shooter? Oh! Poor Meredith my arse. I guess the US constitution guarantees all citizens to bear arms, but I thought it was all about peace, love, and " sure man, it's cool, ya know, we's the luuuuv generation, so my girl's your girl." Oh bollocks! We were just as self centred, self satisfied, and greedy in the 60s as we are now. WHY DID HE TAKE A GUN? Oh! I know I can already see the replies, you racist pig, blah, blah blah. Altamont was the death of the 60s, yeah sure! JFK, Cuban missiles, Vietnam, Pol Pot, Kent State, MLK, RFK, in the UK, the beginings of football hooligans. The euphemistically titled 'The Troubles' in Ulster. Biafra. NASA, complete waste of money, and a scam, civilian space agency be fucked; it's military, the fireworks and whatnot are for the sheople. One could on all day. Altamont the death of the 60s, cobblers! I mean Manson, a fucking hippy. Hippy shit! So, the pimp, pulls a gun, an Angel stabs him. Whenever a disaster at rock concert occurs since then have the Who, Pearl Jam, Great White, etc copped that amount of flak as the Stones and their crew did then? NO! We just cannot  fucking behave, and truly care about our fellow man. Take heed A.E Hotchner you wanker.
