Opening Acts?

With a stadium tour, there has to be opening acts. I haven't heard any name dropping except that Mick Taylor will NOT be along. Who will we be surprised with this time round? I hope they dig up some good acts! I know this thread is going to turn into a joke very quickly, so let me begin with "Justin Bieber"!

Yes, typically stadium shows have opening acts. McCartney didn't last time I saw him....(at least not that I remember, Sweetcharmedlife, help me out...) so the Stones just may follow in his footsteps.

The re-united Replacements will be on tour at the same time. A couple cities might get a big surprise (Kieth loves them).

Macca's shows are 50% longer than the Stones in fairness. Like Springsteen, he doesnt really need an opening act.

I'd imagine they'll have openers as they did last summer in Europe and (I think) in Australia.

I know that Mick Jones' band 'Justice Tonight' had been approached to be an opener on the last US tour - but in the end, the Stones decided not to have support acts at all.

Did the Justice Tonight project ever make it to the States? I'd think anything with Mick Jones would be a great opening act - Carbon/Silicon would be great, and there's even talk of Mick keeping Big Audio Dynamite going from their re-union tour a couple years ago.

TeddyB says both Jagger and Richards are both fans of Jonesy; BAD would be perfect openers - set up the Stones with their huge, funky pulse and nasty guitar; also some name recognition from the party-happy '80s.

It was actually TeddyB who told me about them being approached by the Stones...lol

Big Audio Dynamite - that takes me back. Saw them in '86. Good gig even though the sound marred it a bit.

From what I've seen and heard from the 2011 tour, the sound was great, but yeah I've heard the sound at some '80s gigs could be a bit dodgy, as they were in the midst of inventing a genre unto itself and didn't really know what they were doing!

Don't mean to highjack this thread, but Gazza - you gotta see this: hysterically funny story from Mick followed by a harrowing "Sightsee MC" (written with Joe Strummer), while the UK riots were happening in '11.

Hijacking, sorry.  This one rocks.  I had tickets to see them in Boston the year that the second BAD album was out - and they cancelled.

HIJACKED!!
don't know any bigger fan of B.A.D. or B.A.D.II...pretty sure I have seen every US tour they ever did...even saw the infamous show in Hyde park with Boy George ...first eveidence of the smack habit for Mr O'Dowd...those kids at SXSW (or was it Bonnoroo?) a few years back didn't know what they were even looking at...sad.

I don't think they would be great for the stadium circuit...but maybe Justice Tonight...I know Jonesy can do it...saw both night at Shea in 82...those were my 3rd and 4th Clash shows that summer/fall...good times.

Opening bands...good question...Are the Winos busy?? They can play with Keith coming out for one or two songs...

maybe some of these great Stones cover bands...under contract not to play anything from the Stones actual set...THAT would be a GREAT SHOW!!!

Macca never has opening acts. Indoors or out. Can't see the 'Mats being a supporting act. They're already out on their own tour. I'll be seeing them a week from today.

David Jo and Sylvain are still out there writing great new songs and carrying on the NY Dolls brilliant legacy. But the Glimmer Sisters might be a bit intimidated, just like they were in '73!

Right on, man! Where you seeing them? SF, LA? It's gonna be killer, they're playing so tightly these days but still unpredictable and loads of fun.

I wouldn't rule them out for a show or two with the Stones though; when their US dates end in early May, they only have three gigs booked in Europe so far (two in London, one in Amsterdam), ya never know. Plus, remember, Keith asked them to open for him and the Winos for his birthday show at the old Meadowlands back in '89, and they were on tour then as well - started the tour opening for Tom Petty, then headlining.
But enjoy the 'Mats' show, mate (and please report back afterwards; bastids still haven't announced any Twin Cities gigs yet, grrrrrrr).

Big Country opened some shows on the Voodoo Lounge tour; odd choice for an opening act, apples & oranges type bands, but I reckon from the level of intensity Big Country always played at , the Stones might have been seen as positively coasting at those gigs.
