Bo Diddley has, Robert Cray and my favorite John Lee Hooker among other black men too like Buddy Guy but never Chuck Berry who would fit perfect like  Corona and a lime.

Besides Hail Hail.

Is it all ego?

How do you know he's never been invited?

Muddy Waters was invited to a Stones gig in 1981? What one was that?

'Hail Hail Rock n' Roll' was a film about Chuck Berry, not about the Stones. Chuck wasn't a guest. He was the main attraction.

What's this bit about "other black men"? That's some peculiar wording there. And maybe some peculiar thinking on your part.

You needs to check ya head before posting, boyo.

I think its because of a KEEF-Chuck rivalry that has been going on for many years now. Chuck did or said something KEEF didnt like and even though KEEF admires him, its a personality clash.

That was a Stones gig? First I've heard of it.

Odd that their entire rhythm section was missing.

As were Mick, Keith and Ronnie for the first few songs.

It was nice of the Stones to 'invite' Chuck to the taping of 'Hail Hail', though - especially as it was his own gig.
Pity four out of the five of them forgot to turn up, though. Smiley

During the 1997-98 tour, the Stones did several live telecasts in various countries.

For much of the tour, they opened the b-stage part of the show with Chuck's "Little Queenie".

Yet for most of the televised shows, this song was dropped (usually replaced by something like 'IORR')

The story that went around at the time was that Chuck wanted a lot of money in performing rights for his songs being broadcast.

Since 1998, I think the only time they've performed a Chuck Berry song in concert was when they did 'Little Queenie' at the Echoplex warm up gig in LA in April last year.

Speaks volumes.

Interesting way to spell "come" , "cum" is usually reserved for more pornish speak. On to the topic at hand.  I would love to see Chuck guest also Jerry Lee, Willie Nelson.

So its all about the money? I cant say Im surprised but if Chuck had legal rights to some money, he should of been paid. But the Stones have covered lots of songs thru the years, and has every or any other artist been compensated?  Just wondering if it is only Chuck making an issue or if he has a valid point.

I think it was more a question of HOW much he wanted paid. Whoever's songs they were covering (and Chuck wasnt the only one as they were covering 'Like A Rolling Stone' and 'Little Red Rooster' etc around that time) would have meant royalties being paid, but as I understand it Chuck's demands for his songs being aired were deemed excessive.

So in most cases, they just didnt play them.

So Chuck was being greedy and nobody else cared? This may explain why the Stones aren't doing many cover songs lately. The Stones have so many of their own great songs they don't need to "cover" anyone else's songs anyway.

Another factor - directly related to money - was likely the royalty suit filed by Johnnie Johnson years ago to claim songwriting credits from Chuck. I recall this started following Keith's analysis of Johniie's contributions to Chuck's early work in Hail Hail.  Keith may have even been deposed (or testified) on Johnnie's behalf. Settled out of court? No idea - somebody on this board I'm sure knows.

Perhaps Keith is afraid of Chuck since taking a fist to the face:

I'm pretty sure Keith has alluded to that being an issue between them in recent years.

Chuck has never guested with the Stones...

but Johnnie Johnson has.....

well, Stevie was the opening act throughout the entire '72 tour.

Towards the end of the tour, as you know,  the two bands - the Stones and Wonderlove - worked up a medley of Uptight and Satisfaction which they played together as an encore on some shows.

there's a difference between playing a song live and broadcasting it live… if it's not under your own publishing and it's broadcast or sold in any way, you pay royalties to the publisher, if you just play it, no one need worry, since there's no publishing in just playing live… i'm just clarifying what Gazza said, seems people get this confused.
Many, many artists early on in rock and roll and country got tricked into signing away publishing rights.
It's a big deal, for those who hold onto them. But in this case, Chuck Berry has been known to want too much.
There's really no regulation as far as I know when it comes to publishing. I always wondered why there wasn't an industry standard, but then again it's a bunch of lawyers and suits and then whacked out artists, no one can expect any sanity or sense.

I'm not sure you are correct about playing live under U.S. copyright law.  I'll look into it.
