For Mexicans, mariachi music is usually reserved for special occasions, such as birthdays, Mother’s Day, quinceñeras, weddings, religious holidays, and funerals. (I guess the last day of school qualifies as an appropriate celebration.)
Also, when you’re really, really sad and you just want to drink alone! Mariachi music is the best!
Two of my favorite sad songs: (They are about pain and suffering over a broken heart.)
Maria Dolores Pradera performs “El Día Se Hizo Tarde”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8WWNg1K_XIThe day got late
Maria Dolores Pradera
I waited for you every night
With the same crazy desire
That you would arrive early
To disarm in your mouth
And then you and night would come
And night and you came
To let me pour in your body fantasies
But one day it got late
I thought it was only that
Because night came
And kissed me
Chorus
One day, another day, and another
Showed me without a doubt
That night is better than you
Night is more faithful than dark
My memories
Tossing and turning in bed
After many turns
I found myself at dawn
I jumped to go look for you
Where you usually came
And I saw you. Damn!
The same way, I saw you leave
A breath of love I gave to the wind
(I blew a kiss to you.)
But even the breeze got tired of chasing you
I never knew your reasons
I still don’t know
And even if you don’t believe it.
By God! I still yearn for you.
Sanity abandoned me
When you left my life
Like time to walls
Your love left me in ruins
Chavela Vargas performs Jose Alfredo Jimenez’ “El Ultimo Trago”:

THE LAST DRINK
Jose Alfredo Jimenez
Performed by Chavela Vargas
Drink this bottle with me
and after the last drink we can go
I want to see what your forgetfulness tastes like
without putting your hands in my eyes
tonight I will not beg
tonight you're going to leave for real
it is difficult to have to forget you
without feeling that I no longer want you
The years have not taught me anything
I always fall into the same mistakes
Again toasting with strangers
and to mourn for the same pains
Drink this bottle with me
and after the last drink, you kiss me
expect no witnesses
in case you are embarrassed
And if one day we accidently meet again
do not lean over to talk to me
simply lets shake hands
Let the people gossip if they want
The years have not taught me anything
I always fall into the same mistakes
Again toasting with strangers
and to mourn for the same pains
Drink this little bottle with me
and after the last drink we can go ...
