Don Henley Responds to Robert Plant: ‘I Am Never Bored’
by Dave Lifton May 24, 2014

Don Henley has responded to Robert Plant‘s recent interpretation of why the Eagles reunited 20 years ago. In a new interview, he refutes the claim that it was out of boredom and gets in a solid jab of his own.

“I am never bored,” he told the New Zealand Herald. “The truth is, we enjoy doing it. It is hard work, especially for gentlemen of our age but the fact is it’s a fantastic job and it’s a wonderful way to make a living and see the world and get to travel and we take our kids with us.”

Earlier this month, Plant shot down yet another call for a Led Zeppelin reunion by referencing one of the most highly publicized reunion tours in rock history. “Do you know why the Eagles said they’d reunite when ‘hell freezes over,’ but they did it anyway and keep touring?” he said. “It’s not because they were paid a fortune. It’s not about the money. It’s because they’re bored. I’m not bored.”

Regardless of Plant’s thoughts on the matter, count Henley in as one of those who would gladly pony up for a reunion of the legends, with whom, the interviewer notes, they shared similarly bad reviews in their time. “I really wish [Led Zeppelin] would get back together because they were one of the greatest bands of all time. I think maybe Robert is worried about hitting those notes. He may not be able to unbutton his shirt any more.”

Earlier this week, the Eagles announced that they will bring their ‘History of the Eagles’ tour to Australia and New Zealand in February and March 2015. The March 21 date in Auckland will be their first performance in New Zealand in 20 years.

“What rap did that was impressive was to show there are so many tone-deaf people out there,” he says. “All they need is a drum beat and somebody yelling over it and they’re happy. There’s an enormous market for people who can’t tell one note from another.” - Keef

Plant has always had my respect for moving on, not resting on past glories and resisting the temptation for easy money (and lots of it)

Me too...even with the LZ samples he threw in for that 80's hit...I have always said the same about ABBA...for a band that so many folks love...and the fact that they refuse to put aside their differences every time they are offered 1 BILLION dollars for a world tour...says alot!!
They move on, rebranding their stuff with stage/film...but it works!

Be fair to Plant.
There's too much baggage associated with Zeppelin for him, likely.
Let's see...

Zep prepares to tour the States in Fall of '75--In August 1975, Plant and his wife are involved in a brutal car wreck which nearly cripples him for life and cracks her head open.

Zep tours the States in '77, a long, bitter, chaotic, turbulent tour full of bad vibes and toxic hangers-on--only for Plant to find out toward the end that his young son has died of a mysterious, still unknown ailment while he was thousands of miles away playing the same old songs.

In the meantime, Punk has risen up and Led Zeppelin are among the groups seen as increasingly passe. Jimmy Page has fallen deep into Heroin addiction, leaving his playing sloppy and a mere shadow of itself. Bonham falls deeper into drink and his skills as a drummer decline due to age, exhaustion, alcoholism and poor health.

By 1980, it's Plant and Jones holding the band together, carrying an increasingly strung out Page and an ailing Bonham. Note how little Jimmy contributes to In Through the Out Door as compared to the other records--he could barely play in '79-80.

To make matters worse, Presence and (especially) In Through the Out Door are seen as disappointments, lesser offerings--Led Zeppelin's star is beginning to wane as the '70s come to a close.

Plant has very bad feelings about touring in 1980 and doesn't really want to, and he is coaxed to against his intuition by Peter Grant.

The band sets off on successful a European tour in the summer of 1980 and all members feel revitalized and refreshed and look forward to the future.

Plans are made for a Fall 1980 USA tour, possibly extending into 1981. And then suddenly, less than a month before the start, Robert's best friend in the whole world, John Bonham, is suddenly found dead.

Given all that baggage and water under the bridge, would you really want to revisit that?

Obviously I can't see in Plant's head and know whether the "ghosts of Zeppelin tours past" are to blame, or if he just isn't interested in that music anymore.

Plus, the first two things that you mention, his car wreck in 75, his son dying in 77, didn't happen because of anything Zeppelin did.  Arguably, those things would have happened regardless of what band he was playing in.  Why blame the band?

I will give you that Bonham's death may be right.
The inability to recapture the Zeppelin thing without his best mate certainly stands to reason.
Yet his collaborations with Page in the 90s, and the O2 show seem to argue against that.

Too bad.  I thought the O2 was a pretty neat show, and Plant sure seemed to be enjoying himself.  I missed them in the 70s - would like to see them get it together.

Several interesting points...but the one you leave out that is so clear to me is how much Led Zep as a band feared the Rumours era Fleetwood Mac...that's what did it

With this new lawsuit with STH, there seems to be a good discussion of either who ripped off who first....or did folks pick pieces to make it their own?

1959 Davy Graham

1968 Johnny Rivers

Later in 1968 Spirit

Is it just me , but I think if at about age 65 I am worth about $150,000,000 with an income stream of 2 to 5 million a year, and someone gave me the opportunity to increase my net worth even by 5 times, what difference does it make? I would do whatever I felt like doing irregardless of how much money I would net.
The argument I usually here is... leave more to your kids to which I say...BS, he would need to learn how to manage his money and not waste it....anything over $10,000,0000 gets left to charity

really?

Plant was the weak link in Led Zeppelin, vocally and lyrically.
Good on him for not doing the cheesy re-union thing, and trying to maintain some dignity. He doesn't need the cash, and maybe isn't into it. Why play himself false?

I was lucky enough to see LZ nine times between '69 and '79, owing to my advanced age...I think they owe a couple more generations of fans another few shows, my nieces and nephews and friends kids want to see them live BIG TIME! Go out and play Bonnaroo, Glastonbury and a few more festivals where you can play in front of 250,000  people or more in one day and give the fans what they are craving. Plant wouldn't be able to sell his elevator music if he hadn't been a member of LZ...Wink

mr leatherpurse face doesn't want to take part on the reuinion cos of his fiasco at the 02 arena - i mean, do you call that singing? i'm 34, been singing in an ac/dc cover band since 18, and still can reach my highs all while still having the same voice bon scott had prior to his death and brian johnson in his first 5 years in the band. of course my voice gave up a year ago and i underwent vocal coaching and phonoaudiologist sessions and got it back - something he didn't do since japan in 72 and kept going and sounding more and more like a tool.
me? i've got it all back. plus i know i'll live longer cos i was forced to quit the five packs a day for no pack or a single cig at all. then again considering i drank, snorted coke since 12, shot junk from 16 to 26 and probably had every drug you can imagine in this world in large amounts - i'm clean now, been six months off blow - and for you tourists here in brazil, good for you cos now they've decided to really keep their customers happy and are selling fishscale - then again i might not last that long, what with my emphysema and all that shit. then again i'm jobless, my family is undergoing money problems and my father's schizophrenia is worsening day after day, i couldn't give a crap if i were to fall dead right now.
