The way you use (and pay) for the Internet will never be the same: JR Ball

By JR Ball, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune
on January 15, 2014

A ruling by a U.S. appeals court on Tuesday effectively killed the notion of "net neutrality," clearing the way for Internet service providers to change the way they charge for broadband access.

The ramifications may not be immediate -- and the Federal Communications Commission and the Obama administration may appeal the ruling to the Supreme Court -- but by tossing out "Open Internet" rules the court is clearing the way for ISPs, like Cox Communications, to 1) charge high broadband content companies, such as Netflix, Google, YouTube and Hulu, higher fees to deliver content faster and 2) introduce tiered pricing options for consumers, similar to what currently exists with cable and satellite television packages.

This much is a near certainty: Consumers will pay more for Internet access. How much more depends upon on how much broadband access you want and how fast you want it delivered?

Another potential move will be for ISPs to throttle, or slow down, the delivery speed of video from companies like Netflix, encouraging users to subscribe to the ISP's own on-demand video service, which will almost certainly be delivered faster but cost more.

The most shocking part of Tuesday's (Jan. 14) decision was the court declaring that net neutrality -- and similar restrictions -- aren’t needed, in part, because consumers have a choice in which ISP they use. I'm not sure where these judges live, but, in most cities, Internet access is far from a free market environment, including East Baton Rouge Parish. If anything, we're closer to an oligopoly where Cox is the dominant licensed provider in the parish, though AT&T and smaller companies do provide Internet access to a small percentage of the local market. Clearly the court isn't paying attention to what's happening with the ever-escalating cost for cable and satellite service.

The ruling is a major victory for Cox and other ISPs scrambling for new revenue streams in an era when increasing numbers of young people are junking cable and satellite service for Internet-based, on-demand video and entertainment outlets. Right now, companies like Cox only make money from Internet-only customers through access plans. This opens the door for ISPs to also charge customers based on the amount data they consume.

For example, delivering e-mail requires uses little data and will likely remain as part of a basic package. However, Cox, and others, could charge more for users to enjoy data-heavy services, such as Netflix and YouTube, which, according to the Wall Street Journal, accounts for nearly half the data being consumed over broadband networks by North American consumers. Other popular heavy-data services include BitTorrent, iTunes, Amazon video, Facebook and Hulu.

Moreover, consumers will undoubtedly face higher subscription fees if ISPs begin asking companies like Netflix, which, reports the Wall Street Journal, accounts for 32% of peak Internet traffic in North America, to subsidize the cost of delivering its service to customers.

If there's a silver lining it's that Web companies, such as Google, will accelerate investments in building out their own telecom infrastructure. For example, Baton Rouge, several years ago, was one of hundreds of cities that competed to win Google Fiber service. Kansas City was ultimately selected and Google has since announced plans to expand into Austin and Provo, Utah.

For now, expect companies like Verizon, Cox, AT&T and other ISPs to proclaim their collective commitment to keeping an open Internet. Yet, based on what we've seen with cable and satellite service, don't expect these pledges to last forever -- or for long. Frankly, there's too much potential revenue at stake.

Until then, enjoy the Internet world as you now know it; like everything else involving technology, dramatic change is right around the corner.

TimeWarner here in Texas has already starting different tiers...I pay the second highest amount for 3MBPS service.
I used to pay 38 for >1MPBS and now pay 80...all for internet as I don't have TV.

Isn't that what this guy is talking about essentially?

His article mentions that cable/satellite providers already offered tiered services,
but seems like they want to charge again by "throttling" the speeds of services offered by Netflix, YouTube, etc. and making us pay again for different levels of service.

At least that's how I read it.

Wait til ObamaNet.

You will have to purchase Internet access even if you don't want it, or pay a penalty!

But if you have an ISP and like your ISP, you can keep them....

I'm for this.  People with money are more intelligent than people who are poor - this may act as a filter with respect to people with low IQs, and return a certain level intelligence to the national debate.  Retards love the internet, and have been abusing it for well over a decade now with the thoughts and "opinions."  See, e.g., RO.  I ask some of you: How are we supposed to progress as a nation or culture if we let socialist-based access to media forums form a deluded sense of value and worth in idiots?

Holy piss!  2000 posts!  I didn't even notice I was so close.

I think I could break those down by the drug I was inspired and/or addled by.  Create some kind of pie graph, with different colors for each drug.

Well, where I live, I have a free internet signal that is free to use thank god.

And I think more of those free hot spots are coming around more and more.

There will sill be no tax on the internet.

The internet should be the wild wild west.

Fuck paying 30/40 dollars a month when you can get it for free.

Which (give it time) the internet will be for free.

Hot wifi singles are popping all over the place.

I'm telling you, this economic intelligence filtering that is being proposed may work.  It's no substitute for genetic IQ filtering, but society isn't there yet.  Soon.

But it's what we have.  Sure there will be anomalies.  For example, Telecaster has an IQ of around 100, but that hack is bust.  He is broke.  Skint.  Ragged as a roach.  He doesn't have a styrofoam cup to piss in.  He couldn't buy a donut hole.  He's so poor, he goes to KFC to lick other people's fingers.  He's so poor the ducks throw bread at him.  He can barely subsist in a free enterprise market-based Capitalist-American system.

JB, on the other hand, is loaded.  Fucking loaded, man.  He's got more ducets (The Large Green $$$$) than Goliath and Nebuchardnezzar together.  The finest jewelry, flex-checkered suits, custom embroidered poofery, square footage, lawn animals, multiple cars, Italian vestibules, the whole bit.  He could by and sell all of us.  Yet, judging from his semi-literate posts, he had an IQ of around 90-95.

So, its not perfect, but we should see some improvement in content when this new law moderates alleged First Amendment rights.  Sadly, for some of you, the law will be a farewell/swan song (see, e.g., Telecaster).

I think wifi is secure for banking if you type the right URL code in the address bar though...

Then, you will see a lock image there or somewhere...

It's still secure after the Target Stores scare scam thing or whatever...
