Pharrell Williams works in a lot of music genres, both as
a performer and a producer. Hip hop, pop, and of most
relevance here, the kind of neo soul practiced by
Jagger colloborator Raphael Saadiq. Pharrel cites
such greats as Curtis Mayfield and Donny Hathaway
among his influences.

(Also relevant: Pharrel is a member of the production
team, the Neptunes, that brought forth the best of
the Sympathy re-mixes).

His newest hit is called Happy, and although its
musically unrelated to Keith's song, I cite it here
because its also quite an upper and because its much
closer than most hits today to the kind of black pop
that the Stones and many of their older fans grew
up on.
