Mick Jagger in Jackson? Tongues are wagging about the rocker in the capital city, but that may just be lip service.
“We have no knowledge of that,” Ward Emling, director of the Mississippi Film Office, said Tuesday from New York City, where he was on vacation following an official visit there last week. “There’s no reason for him to have been in Jackson, so I don’t know what that’s all about.
“I’ll be back and I’ll start looking for Mick Jagger when I get home,” he promised.
Film Office deputy director Nina Parikh said, “He is indeed one of the producers on (the James Brown biopic) “Get On Up” but we have no reason to believe he is in town currently.”
Actual news reports put Jagger at Giorgio’s at the Standard, Hollywood, Saturday and at HBO’s Emmy Awards after-party Sunday in Los Angeles.
Can’t get no satisfaction tracking down the rumors, either.
The scuttlebutt about the Rolling Stones front man and founding member man seems to center in Fondren, after a few Facebook posts sent folks scurrying to try to spot the star.
There is that kernel of possibility behind the buzz, with Jagger’s Jagged Films producing “Get On Up,” which will be directed by Tate Taylor (”The Help”). A report on wroq.com said it’ll feature the rock star in an unspecified role.
Shooting on film is set to begin in Natchez and Jackson in early November. A late August Mick Jagger tweet said, “So glad the Jagged Films/Imagine biopic of James Brown GET ON UP is going to be shooting this October, starring Chad Boseman.”
Paul Wolf, publisher of the online and print magazine Find It In Fondren, chased down a Facebook post that Jagger was at last Wednesday’s Lisa Marie Presley concert at Duling Hall, to no avail.
“I think the rumors started floating around. You know, it’s like the telephone game — one person starts it one way and then by the time you get to the end, the Stones were here, they did this full concert at the coliseum and nobody got to go. It’s that kind of deal.
“The place was packed so full I don’t know how he could have slipped in the door anywhere,” Wolf said. “He could have had sunglasses and a hat I guess, but I did not notice anybody that looked vaguely familiar or odd, or thin and wrinkly. I did not see Mick Jagger or anybody that closely resembled him.”
Concert promoter Arden Barnett said he heard the same “severe rumors” but Jagger “was not there,” at the Presley show that edged close to a sellout. “I have not seen Mick Jagger. ... I have talked to no credible source on this,” he said, laughing as he added, “my friends are not credible, at least when it comes to Mick Jagger sightings.” Sure would like to know some sort of potential time period for Jagger in Jackson, though, “so I could book a bad-a-- concert around it and hopefully we would have a guest artist show up. The word was, we were going to have that at Lisa Marie Presley, but negative, Ghost Rider.”
Jim Wilkirson, executive director of Fondren Renaissance Foundation can “definitely say” that Jagger was not at Symphony at Sunset at the Cedars last Thursday either, “and he did not sing.” The concert’s Highland Fling slant included a British music theme, though. “It would have been the perfect time. We had Beatles music and 007, but he didn’t show,” Wilkirson said, laughing. “It would have been the perfect surprise” to spontaneously add a Rolling Stones number to the evening “but I wasn’t able to pull that one out of my back pocket.”
Blake Wing tweeted on Saturday, “Mick Jagger is legitimately in the tall condo next to my house. In Jackson. In Mississippi.”
Opera singer Lester Senter Wilson, who lives in a tall condominium building in Fondren, said she hasn’t seen Jagger, “but would love to.”
A Facebook post mentioned he’d been to Walker’s Drive-In, but Brady Davis there said, “Nobody’s seen him.” But he also offered the tantalizing, “I have not seen him here yet.”
Restaurateur Jeff Good posted the provocative “Sooo ... Mick Jagger in Jackson? Jogging on Meadowbook? True or false?” on Facebook Saturday.
Good was at a swim meet when he overheard person’s outburst, while looking at their phone, “Oh my God, Mick Jagger’s jogging on Meadowbrook!”
“You know me, I’m going to go ahead and have some fun,” Good said.
So did others, with quips about the 70-year-old rock star on the run, the risk of a sink hole or curb on the Jackson street, and even an offering from someone who had been jogging on Meadowbrook that morning, “maybe that’s how bad I looked. hahaha!”
