Been waiting for your review Gazza!

Good to hear you enjoyed yourself.  Also great to hear that your experience with the Stones current playing lines up pretty well with everyone else's reviews throughout the US tour.  They are indeed playing at a better level.

I myself agree with you that the band is playing at a level better than the ABB tour--a few others have also said the same thing. I do wonder if that is truly the case or is that something we fans say every time they go out on tour?  They always seem to be "better" than the last time they were out.  It sure is a mystery because this time around they surely ARE playing at a better level than before.

For example, over the weekend I happened to watch this clip from the Rio show from 2006 (?) and was a little put off with what I heard.  I can't recall at the time being that disturbed by it but only by comparing it to the performance from this tour do I see just how limp this performance is--even with Mick flailing about like a fish out of water.  So glad he's turned it down on this tour.

Spot on Gary!!

Yeah, the show was a little disappointing, song choice as well as length wise, but also quality wise for me. Keith was struggling on many songs (just see how he fumbles through the intro of SMU) and even Mick seemed to have some problems: out of breath, timing problems etc. He sounded a bit like he had a cold, maybe he did. But Ronnie was really sharp, so it's a well deserved 'well done Ronnie' from me!

I had hoped Mick would have at least mentioned Brian's name, but well, that's also typically Mick right. Mick Taylor was great on MR as expected. I hate how they under-use him too, probably also typically Jagger. I wonder if Taylor'll join for the Euro leg too in the fall, we'll see.

Anyway, I adjusted my expectations and didn't go for a high quality Stones show (though would have been nice), as I think they basically have sucked live since the new millennium.

I also was disappointed with the sound level: I could barely hear them sometimes, being further away to the side. Mind you, no fault of their own, but Hyde Park residents conditions to BST apparently.

I agree with Gaz about the organisation of the thing: just horrible. And don't get me started about trying to get something to eat: lack of choices, not enough vendors, waiting 60 minutes for a cheeseburger, just silly. Toilets were fine though.
Also I drank free water all afternoon as it was insanely hot and they gave away cups and refilled peoples bottles, very nice guys too.

And getting to Hyde Park and seeing Bernard just strolling around the grounds was so funny. I ran yelling after him like a groupie, lol, but he was gracious as ever, taking his time for photos.

The meetings at the Monkey Bar before and the St. Giles hotel after were sublime of course. I had a real blast, thanks everyone!

Oh and if you have nothing better to do, just watch my video snippets here:

The Rolling Stones Return to Hyde Park After 44 Years
Band recreates atmosphere of famed 1969 shows in stage set

The Rolling Stones returned to Hyde Park on Saturday, 44 years after their celebrated performances at the central London location, to a crowd of 65,000. The Sun reports that the band wanted to recreate the experience of the 1969 performance by installing two 70-foot tall model oak trees onstage, to mimic the woodlands the band played in decades ago. A video montage played footage from the 1969 performance on big screens just before the band took the stage.

"When Mick and the band looked out from the stage back in the Sixties, all they could see was a sea of people and a load of trees," a source told The Sun.

100 Greatest Artists: The Rolling Stones

"It's like a cross between Wimbledon and a pantomime forest," Mick Jagger said from the stage.

The Rolling Stones' 1969 shows at the park were their first with Mick Taylor in the lineup; Brian Jones had died just two days earlier and had been out of the band for about a month.

The Rolling Stones were joined by Gary Clark Jr. for the bluesy crooner "Bitch," and later by the Voice Chamber and London Youth Choir for the choral introduction to "You Can't Always Get What You Want," followed by "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction."

The performance was part of London's Barclaycard British Summer Time celebration, a new two-week festival that opened on Friday with Jon Bon Jovi. Other performers included Tribes, Palma Violets and the Vaccines.

Great review Gazza. Not sure about Mick's frock, but as far as I could see it was cheaply made and not the original one from 1969.

Just listened to one of the bootlegs and I think they did good. A few bum notes from Keith, but what's new ? ! I thought Mick sounded a little out of Breath, but he was running about more than on the arena stage. At almost 70 he is incredible by any standard. He certainly had a better gig than I did. Don't really know what happened.....Drunk ? I don't think so. I think the heat /sun got to me as I felt seriously weird after the 1st number. Annoyed about the tier one restricted view , I went on a ............er , kind of rampage down to the front and ended up getting punched for my efforts. I f*cking deserved it to be honest. Flairville thought I'd lost my mind ! I think I had for a while.....came back to my original position with Ben, SV and her husband, but I spent the rest of the gig "detached". It wasn't drink. I've done shows sober, merry and wrecked and always enjoy them. Cooled off as we got moving out of the venue and came round.......my worst ever gig. Passed out on Sunday and spent half the day lying down and drinking water.....bad. Next week I'm bringing a hat, shorts and more water !

Chalking this one down to experience.

The underuse of Mick Taylor though continues to be a real head scratcher. One song on electric and then bringing him back to play a barely audible acoustic guitar on the final song?
Whats that all about? Its the musical equivalent of having the chance to cast someone like Jenna Jameson in your own porn movie and then reducing her to a clothed part where she just flashes a bit of cleavage.
'Midnight Rambler' is the highlight every night.

Splendid review. But please expatiate somewhat, Stray. A stupefying jab to the very centre of the gizzard, was it? A head-lock followed by repeated pummeling around the cheery chops? A single but fierce one in the gentleman's purse?
Any further details would be nice for the record.

None of the hard-RO-hitters seemed noticeable at Tim Ries' show tonight. Bernard was really splendid on Wide Hearses and Selina Sillanpää, from Finland, delighted on both No Expectations and a violin-driven Bro Shugah. Sweet summer night. Happy days.

Luckily a glancing ,limp wristed effort. I just looked at the guy until he explained why he thought I was out of order. He kind of apologised , so I did. No harm done. Careful with the heat next week !

60 hours or so after the event, as afew thoughts regarding saturday's show. (I don't need to recount the pre-show events - the photos speak for themselves).

So Keith fluffed the opening few notes of the opening song, so what? Few in the large crowd would have noticed & the reality is, any "mistakes" made by the band were negligible.
There was a, largely, fantastic atmosphere to be witnessed on saturday night. The festival crowd, full of mainly young people, who i would hazard a guess, were Stones show virgins, were "up for it".
The Stones, playing out of their 20,000 seater enormo-dome, comfort zone, responded in spades to the hordes of teenagers & twenty-somethings singing back at them.

'Gimme Shelter' seemed to be the biggest favourite amongst the crowd, where i was standing. The masses went insane.

Jagger's grin throughout told a truth.
He was clearly enjoying himself. Maybe, just maybe, he now realises that there's a whole new generation of Stones fans out there worth entertaining.

I for one, and i expect i'm in the minority of the 'hardcore fanbase' when i say this, hope they play more festivals & events where young fans get to see & hear they're heroes.

However, as per usual with field shows:- poor facilities. Criminal pricing of refreshments & stewards with limited knowledge of anything but navel-gazing.

Much respect to St John Ambulance volunteers & medics, who were on scene within seconds, everytime a festival goer, 'went down'.

A combination of hot weather too much booze and Mary Jane.....Mad dogs and Englishmen.
