Taylor got the looks, right.
But I'd still would prefer Marianne F to guest on that song.
Just nostalgic wishing, I know. It will never happen.

Thanks for the clip. Nice. But the song itself is dark. It's about death, and/or about the demons in this world that grab hold of us and cause us to fall.

Bitch - Please ponder that he/the singer/the song-writers AIN'T crying; is not going to a funeral/cemetery, in order to avoid being brought down. He/the singer/the song-writers/someone is contemplating the idea that love 'strutting out'. Also he/the singer/the song-writer may - by 'broke me up' - may mean laughing rather than upset/damage.

All Stones lyrics seem, to me, splendidly nuanced and layered and multi-meaninged, and become more so with age.
That's one reason why, to me, it's more than interesting for the RSs to explore 'As Tears Goes By' with Taylor.

There must be ways to find out
Love is the way they say is really strutting out

Hey, hey, hey now
One day I woke up to find
Right in the bed next to mine
Someone that broke me up with a corner of her smile, yeah

Yes broke me up can be ether laughing or crying, I took his meaning as laughing. Smiling can be contagious and if you see someone smiling you smile right back automatically. Someone laughing gets us laughing too even in the darkest hour. Love and laughing in bed with your lover is the opposite of tears and death and a funeral. SWAY can be interpreted as moving from the dark side of death and tears to the bright side of love and laughter. MICK/KEEF swayed from tears to laughter. But the DEMON LIFE I always took literally as the actual demons in life, which in this case is drugs. Drugs that caused death, hence the funeral. Death could be from anything but I assumed someone died from a drug overdose because drugs get you in their grip and sway you from the joy of life to a living hell. Am I diggng too deep here?

Bitch - Thanks for responding, expecially given how badly composed my message had been.
I feel most Stones' lyrics shift gear/attitude/angle each verse, so they're (enjoyably) tricky to really get to grips with. In 'Sway' I've often thought of the 'demon life' - at least the one at the beginning - as a dead person whose life continues to affect one; as if family & friends departed/of the past continue to hold sway.
But you may be right that it's mainly about drugs. Certainly there were a lot of drug and/or death flavours in the Stones' songs around that period.
Sometimes I wonder how they deal with the memories when they return to some ol' tunes.
I personally think there was something pretty poignant about them returning to 'As Tears Go By' and letting a young woman sing it with them and using the song to reflect on the past, on their (joint love for) Marianne, on the beginning of their song-writing, and on watching young folk doing things they did years ago.
Anyway, I'm waffling, but Best Wishes.

Interesting! Never thought of it that way but you could be right about this. Demon life = dead person's spirit. Since this song was written after Brian's death could it be that Brian's spirit was holding onto and influencing MICK/KEEF songwriting, especially since MICK did not attend Bran's funeral? I think KEEF did go. IT JUST HIT ME - SWAY IS ABOUT BRIAN!

Keef didn't go Ellen, just Bill & Charlie, interesting insights, certain drugs like Cocaine, heavy use that is, can lead into the occult, Bowie for one is a testament to that, if you ever read "Backstage passes" Angie Bowie's account of Bowie's coke filled days in Los Angles, it's an eye opener.

As tears go by was lovely, just lovely! And what great guitar playing by keith! Lyrically the song is right up taylor's ally. I'm guessing you guys feel the same way old black folks did back in the 60's when the stones were on stage with the likes of howling wolf. They weren't worthy back then either and you know it you bastards!

At least they had a grounding in that sort of music and were trying to musically evangelise their audiences.

Until last week, Taylor Swift probably wouldnt have known a Rolling Stones song if it jumped up and bit her in the ass.
