If you're price point is somewhat reasonable ($85 and up), like in line what bands like even Styx can charge these days, you don't need the band you sell you a ticket.

This just in on Reuters & CBC

http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/05/03/entertainment-us-rollingstones-tickets...

http://www.cbc.ca/news/arts/story/2013/05/02/rolling-stones-lower-ticket-prices....

(Reuters) - Wild horses couldn't drag many of the most die-hard of Rolling Stones fans to the kick-off of the band's North American tour - at least not at prices of up to a whopping $600 a ticket.

Three weeks after tickets went on sale, and a day before the British band take the stage on Friday, the Los Angeles Staples Center was far from sold out for the "50 and Counting" gig.

Secondary ticket sellers StubHub had more than 500 tickets available 24 hours before the May 3 show, Good Seat tickets said they were slashing re-sale prices by 40 percent, and Epic Nation rolled out a 10 percent discount code.

The veteran rock band announced on their official website this week that they were releasing an additional number of tickets at a modest $85, the only price point that quickly sold out for the May 3 concert.

According to the website, some of the $85 seats will be among the best seats in house in the "Tongue Pit," with others spread around the arena. Buyers will be notified of their seat location on the day of the show.

Concert promoters AEG denied they were cutting prices, saying tickets once thought to have an obstructed view had come to light after the tongue and lip shaped stage was set up.

"Seeing (the stage) in this setting for the first time, we were able to determine that seats previously thought to have obstructed views were in fact unobstructed and could immediately be offered to fans for $85 each," AEG said in a statement.

On Thursday, seats at prices ranging from $250 to $600 were still available, according to the AXS website operated by AEG, which owns the Staples Center arena that seats about 19,000 people.

BIGGEST STONES TOUR IN SIX YEARS

Friday's show officially kicks off the band's 17-date North American tour to mark their 50 years in the music business. It's the biggest tour by the Stones in six years and follows a handful of dates in London, Paris and New York at the end of 2012.

Tickets for the London shows in November sold out swiftly despite complaints from fans over similarly high prices.

"Having a $600 price point for prime seats is definitely pushing the envelope," said Gary Bongiovanni, editor-in-chief of Pollstar, a concert industry magazine.

He noted it was a particularly tough sell to core Rolling Stones fans who have seen the band many times.

"It's easy for someone who has seen them to rationalize and say I'm not sure I want to skip my mortgage payment to see them again," he told Reuters.

Nevertheless Bongiovanni expects sales to pick up with the lower prices. "I wouldn't expect a lot of empty seats because they're repricing tickets to whatever it takes," he said.

The band played a more reasonably priced $20 "surprise" gig in Los Angeles last Saturday.

The Rolling Stones last went on the road from 2005 to 2007, playing 144 shows globally and grossing more than $550 million, one of the world's most lucrative tours.

Guitarist Mick Taylor, who played with the Stones from 1969 to 1974, is joining frontman Mick Jagger, guitarists Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood and drummer Charlie Watts, as a guest on the North American tour.

As was the case last year, the set list is expected to focus on classic Stones hits like "Gimme Shelter," "Paint it Black" and "Jumping Jack Flash."

Later this summer, The Rolling Stones will play London's Hyde Park, and for the first time in their career, the Glastonbury music festival in England, both of which are sold out.

================================================================================
============================

It appears that Rolling Stones fans have a price limit, with the cost of tickets purportedly dropping for concerts on the iconic rock band's 50 and Counting tour.

The band kicks off its latest concert series in Los Angeles on Friday, but the priciest tickets for the Staples Center show — which have a face value of up to $600 US per person — remained available for purchase online Thursday.

Some fans have been spreading news online of deals for the top-priced Stones tickets, after some ticket resellers reportedly reduced their prices for a few upcoming shows in California by as much as $200 US per ticket.

Meanwhile, the band's decision to offer $85 tickets for a general admission "Tongue Pit" area next to the stage — a trend adopted by many artists — has proved successful, selling out in many locations.

The instant sellout of the lower-priced tickets prompted the Stones to announce on Wednesday that they'd be offering more of them — with conditions.

The new batch of $85 tickets could land fans in the stage-side pit or another area of the arena. However, the number of new tickets available at each stop will be determined the day of the concert, after the band's staging and production is loaded in. Consequently, the seat locations will only be revealed when a buyer actually picks up his or her tickets the night of the show. The tickets must be bought in pairs.

Interested fans can register for a chance at the new batch of lower-priced tickets via the band's official website or Facebook page. The tickets will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Rolling Stones, who celebrated their 50th anniversary as a band in 2012, have been blasted for the high prices of their shows. So far, the group has announced 17 concert stops across North America for the 50 and Counting tour, followed by three in the U.K., including a stop at the Glastonbury Festival.

Thousands of people are stalking the $85 tickets. They are probably hoping to bait and switch at least some of those folks into paying higher prices.

Rolling Stones face pay cut as poor sales force them to slash US ticket prices

The rock giants are taking desperate measures to ensure full houses for their anniversary US gigs

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2013/may/04/rolling-stones-face-pay-cut-ticket-p...

Could it be the tour too far for the Rolling Stones? Insiders are even speculating that the band will have to renegotiate the huge guaranteed fees for their American tour, which opened on Friday, as ticket prices are radically reduced in light of poor sales. A perfect storm of management hubris, fan indifference and technology change is threatening to turn the tour into a disaster.

Last week the band said it was dropping the price of thousands of premium seats – "flexing" in industry parlance – rather than play to half-empty arenas. The situation was so dire, one insider revealed, that the band's own allotment of tickets was released because of a lack of requests.

"Total disaster. Too expensive and no vibe on the shows … it's a terrible way to go out," a source said. He added that the band could hardly refuse if their reputed $20m fees for the tour were revised. "What's the band gonna do? Say we're not going to play if you touch our gross?"

In the UK, by contrast, tickets for the groups's two Hyde Park shows, priced from £95-£300, quickly sold out, although £750-plus hotel package tickets remain. The , and they are also headlining the Glastonbury festival.

Although there was widespread grumbling about ticket prices after the Stones played in London and New York last year, it is since this tour reached the US west coast and heartlands such as Chicago that outright hostility has emerged towards the band and its promoter, the giant AEG Entertainment.

"I have to give them respect for what they have done, but now they seem like an embarrassment," fan Cameron Bowman told the San Francisco Chronicle recently. "Seriously, how much more money do they need? I feel like they are in Donald Trump or Gordon Gekko territory – just money for money's sake."

By setting prices at $170 (£110) for a cheap seat, $635 for a top seat or up to $2,000 for a VIP ticket, the band alienated blue-collar fans who have kept their tours profitable through the decades. Their 2005 tour grossed £350m.

This year is a different story. The Stones are playing in arenas holding from 10,000 to 15,000 people, not stadiums. In theory that should be more profitable – if fans will pay more for a closer view.

But the plan has backfired. The band has no new material to tour behind and its new management has allowed ticket prices, not the show, to become the story. By contrast, bands such as Fleetwood Mac and Tom Petty are selling out, but their tickets are a fraction of the price.

Playing in only a few cities – Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Toronto, Boston and Philadelphia – means it is less expensive to tour. But that plan relies on hardcore fans willing to travel – and they may not want to sit in an upper tier that's within their budget but is farther from the stage. So they are sitting out the tour.

"They did everything backwards," said one tour veteran. "It was a last-minute decision to celebrate their 50th anniversary. A bit more thought should have gone into it because now they are up against all this summer competition."

The Stones have a history of pushing the boundaries of ticket prices; they were one of the first bands to adopt multi-tiered pricing. But now legitimate secondary ticket sellers such as StubHub.com allow artists to see exactly what people are willing to pay to see their show.

The escalation in prices is partly testing the top of the market and partly an effort to squeeze touts out of the business. But touts may be a necessary evil. They took the risk in buying tickets for resale and priced that into their business. Now the Stones are taking on that risk, they also take the chance of getting burned.

"Price does matter," said Gary Bongiovanni, editor of the concert industry publication Pollstar. "The market is speaking."

I don't want to see these headlines about "our" band, but the shit has finally hit the fan and they've only got themselves to blame.

Even if they had priced at the level of their old rival Paul McCartney, it could have been so different. ......"50 years at the top", "Stones as popular as ever","hottest tickets in years" headlines would have been a better way to go out imho.

It's only rock n roll apparently !

They have started dumping tongue packages  and hot seats onto Secondary sellers by the look of it, rather than reduce them to a cheaper ($600 !) price for fans. Bastards.

" Last week the band said it was dropping the price of thousands of premium seats – "flexing" in industry parlance – rather than play to half-empty arenas. The situation was so dire, one insider revealed, that the band's own allotment of tickets was released because of a lack of requests.

Although there was widespread grumbling about ticket prices after the Stones played in London and New York last year, it is since this tour reached the US west coast and heartlands such as Chicago that outright hostility has emerged towards the band and its promoter, the giant AEG Entertainment. I predicted this & they deserve it. But does it mean they will do many more shows to get money? Or say "stuff it" and bugger off to their various mansions after these shows?

Who can they rip off? All the economies are fucked.

Except one.

Australia.

$800 tickets anyone?

Great Article   .................... Thanks Edith   :

" In the current pricing model, brokers are still getting $750 for a $600 ticket, Meglen points out, and more than $1,000 for the best seats, but the band is capturing a larger percentage of face value. “We flex $450 [tickets] up to $600 on the on-sale,” he says. “When every single one of them doesn’t sell, you have to rescale some of them, there’s nothing wrong with that.”

Meglen says more than 20,000 $600 tickets sold in Los Angeles across the four shows. “Did we hit a point where we ran out of people that would buy at $600? Yeah,” he says. “But why can’t we do the ‘market value’ thing? Why do we have to let the market value proposition live with the scalpers? Why should, in my estimation, $3 million go to the brokers, instead of the artists, in every one of these markets?”

They should attach this article to any announcements for the Washington, DC onsale.

Their is an easy way to stop scalping. Make it illegal to sell any tickets above face value. Scalping over.

More Craigslist stings for the local PD and less actual crime fighting.

When I was "converting" some of my "extras" for lesser events into Stones tickets, it would have been a hassle to bundle them with a $1,000 limo ride but not outside the realm of possibility.
