RIP Mr Movie...

I used to watch "Sneak Previews"w/ Siskel and Ebert on PBS as a kid...

They led me to the wonderful world of cinema with a different view.
They introduced me to the concept of Cult Films as well as Concert movies.

Let's go get drunk2 Thumbs up for you sir...two thumbs up for sure! Let's go get drunk

RIP Roger Ebert.   Sad News.   I used to watch Siskel and Ebert also.  Enjoyed the show, didn't always agree with their opinion.

So weird. I grew up with them and the theatre used in the opening was blocks from the house I grew up in, so us kids in the neighborhood took a lot pride in that.

His site has become a go-to for me lately, as a friend of mine is watching "The Top 100 Greatest Films" and blogging about it, so I've been going to Ebert's site to see what *his* opinion is.

Weirdly, and not be morbid, but Cardinal Fang made me watch "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls," and I grew much more interested in him after that--it gave me a lot of respect for his role as "critic" to know he'd done some time actually making movies himself.

And really, who can't love a guy who titles a book "Your Movie Sucks"?

Luckily, I still have a casette tape of him playing "The Ghost of Christmas Past" on Steve and Garry's (of Disco Demolition fame) "A Christmas Story" one year at the Chicago Broadcasting Museum. He was totally hilarious in it.

RIP.

Too bad. RIP, Mr. Ebert.

I didn't always agree with him, as with every critic; his Blue Velvet review was kinda weird. His biggest concern, if I remember correctly, was Lynch's treatment of Isabella Rossellini's character, as if Rossellini wasn't a professional actress, but his style was simple, direct and often humorous. He never seemed like a pedantic jerk. and he could be flexible in his opinions.

Not to speak too ill, since I enjoyed his TV show years ago, but Ebert over the last decade made a point of trashing films that displayed a liberal political or moral sensibility. His review of Sean Penn's respectable adaptation of All the King's Men, that great anti-corruption novel, helped doom that film at the box office.

Gene Siskel was the better critic, and in his shorter lifespan was demonstrably not a sell-out to conservative takeover of the media (considering that Ebert once championed Bonnie & Clyde for the same reasons he slammed All the King's Men).
