SupaRevy -  Cheer up you twat. Which, come to thunk of it, is probably a more likely gist (of numerous gists and nuances) in the lyric of 'Doom & Gloom' than the one you claim. It always suprises me when 'folk' assume one message within a Jogger lyric. 'Emotional Rescue', to my ears, seems to be gathering assorted perspectives (love, cynicism, belief, ambivalence, humour...) and characters (lovers, weepers, genders...) together.  It's 'Stop Breaking Down' one moment, then it's Smokey, then it's gawd knows how many other thingles.

You didn't say that the 'Doom & Gloom' lyric began with 'I had a dream last night' and I think you added he word 'so' in there somewhere and other stuff. You'd prob have to be Siggy F to (try to) definitively work out what the (differently angled and charactered) verses are 'saying'. It's interesting that it's a 'dream', not a 'nightmare', as people wake from nightmares because they can't be resolved, whereas 'MJ''s dream ends bloodily but ok. So maybe essential ne message is that the mind can combat/sidestep misery.
Anyway, could you not muse a while and then write a more fullsome thesis on 'Doom & Gloom'... rather than just use a couple of lines from an interesting and groovy tune, that at the very least challenges you to think and dance, as a means of moaning about a band who could root you silly for as little as 85 greenies?
Talking of Sigmund F, and particularly in relationship to the psychology of critics and criticism -
have you read and taken on board his 'Theory Of Small Differences'?
I'm fascinated/ interested/amused by theories on the dates of the Ruling Stains' 'glory days' and I'm slightly taken aback by some's desire for Taylor to be all-over-everything. I'm just confident they'll (M, K, E and C) in confidentally do whatever seems best and they'll do it in the best trousers and with a very lovely thumppity-thump.

Don't know how I typed "(M, L, E and C)". I meant "(M, K, R and C)".

Sorry, my keyboard just went arse-o'er-tit, technically.
M, K, R and C are the correct initials of the band members.

This is not a parody of TomL's multiple messages and SupaRevy's existential pain.

Demand to see this band is still high. They could sell out multiple shows in minutes if tickets were moderately priced. In the end, if promoters and/or scalpers take a bath, that's not our business. That's just ... business.

I'm excited for Philly.

A Letter to the Rolling Stones Regarding Their Absurdly Expensive New Tour
By Rae Alexandra Wed., May 1 2013

...
"These fools are going to give us so much money!" "Wait, $650 for a ticket is a lot?"

Dear Rolling Stones,

As we're sure you're aware, a little ripple of joy went through crowds of music fans the world over recently when you announced you were about to tour again. We were a little perturbed to find out that Mick Jagger has started dancing in front of a mirror in preparation, but that's by the by. (Seriously Mick, my conservative great aunt could do an awesome re-creation of your strut at this point -- what are you studying, exactly?)

You probably didn't see us complaining about your ticket prices in early April, when tickets for your Oakland and San Jose shows on May 5 and May 8, respectively, went on sale, but we were pretty disgusted with you then, as we're sure many of your fans were.
Well, now we've just had it confirmed from an article on Business Insider that this tour is "one of the most expensive ever". Those Business Insider people calculated that the cheapest average ticket price for the Stones on this tour was $806. The average price, in America, for one of your tickets this time around is $1260, they say. That isn't just inflated -- it's some week-in-the-sun-vacation kind of money. And its especially interesting considering that your last tour raked in $558 million, making it the second highest-grossing concert tour of all time.

The article said that the cheapest face price for a ticket to see a Stones concert on the current tour is $143. We know that's for some shitty nosebleed seat that reduces you all to a pile of geriatric dots, and we know, of course, that that's before any pocket-rape handling fees have been thrown in. Are you aware that venues of the size you're playing routinely charge $30-50 for a parking space for the evening? Are you in touch with the real world at all at this point? Or how much the average American makes in a year?

As we said, we know the deal these days. We know that due to rampant downloading, no one makes money selling records anymore. The cost of concert tickets and merch prices have gone through the roof to pick up the financial slack. We get it. But we also get that the average person can't afford to go to as many concerts as they used to, and that bums us out. You guys just made things infinitely worse.

We've always understood how you Rolling Stones were with your cash (we all know how you moved to France in the '70s because you didn't feel like paying high British taxes anymore) but you are all -- as you would say in your own country -- more than taking the piss at this point.

Your fortunes were made pre-downloading. You were making loads of money from music for decades before the shit hit the fan. You are all multi-millionaires, several times over because of it. So you can't use that as an excuse.

We also aren't particularly interested in hearing about how, because this is a shorter tour, you need to make money faster. How is your own unwillingness to do more dates the fault of the fans? Why should we have to pay more for you to do less?

We're not saying you're not a great band. We believe you still put on a great show. You are bonafide legends. But ticket prices this high from a band already sitting on so much cold, hard cash says one thing and one thing only -- you guys no longer have any concept of the value of a dollar, so you don't care how much strain you're putting on your own fans, or what kind of precedent you are setting.

We wish your fans weren't so dedicated, Rolling Stones. We wish you were going to arrive at half-empty arenas every night and see the error of your ways. That won't happen because music fans -- Rolling Stones fans -- are dedicated to what they love.

I saw you in 1990, Rolling Stones, in the U.K.'s Cardiff Arms Park. My parents literally had to talk me into going because I was 12 and you weren't Guns 'N' Roses. My parents were able to drag me along because the tickets were, if memory serves, £20 (about $30) and they considered it an investment worth making. The concert opened my eyes to what an incredible band you were, and I was grateful to have gone in the end. It's a shame that reluctant kids won't get the same musical education I was fortunate enough to enjoy, because of bands like you making it impossible.

In short, Rolling Stones, you just turned rock 'n' roll into an elitist past-time. Here's hoping your inflated bank balances help you live with that.

That's simply not true. The tickets may be grossly and offensively expensive, but they're absolutely not as high as that. The rest of this article and others like it are pretty accurate though - although I'm a bit bemused by how many writers (and Stones fans on facebook) seem to have only now just discovered that they've 'turned rock n roll into an elitist pastime'. Theyve been doing that now for the last 10-15 years.

Or it could be I was right a year ago when this whole 50 and Counting thing was floated, when I said that if it wasn't
a joke, it was Mick's deliberate plan to bring this ridiculously vapid reactionary charade to an end asap, without
his fingerprints being all over the murder weapon.

Makes no sense. When Stones' greed is always debated, Jagger bears the brunt of the flak (or gets the lions share of the plaudits for those idiots who think high tour grosses are some kind of badge of honour) every time by being stereotyped as the cold-hearted, money-obsessed businessman. Wanting to see an end to the performing life cycle of the band? That bit is believable. Ending it in embarrassing fashion? Not when you possess one of the biggest egoes in showbusiness, it isn't.

The existing  rebuttal ( from April 3 2013, Chicago Tribune article

Q: I’ve heard from many people today who say they would like to go to the shows but can’t afford a ticket (ranging from $85 to $600). What do you say to them?

Jagger:
If you really can’t afford a ticket, it’s sad. I feel bad about that
. But there are seats at different prices. We have some cheap ones that are quite good, too. There’s a price for everybody I think.

Who is this "everyone" Sir Mick speaks of?? Does anybody know him/her?

Well there's a price for everyone now.

Only because there happened to be less mugs willing to pony up a week's salary for a great seat, let alone for a nosebleed.

Probably several thousand tickets will be released in the $85 category, whereas originally it was a smokescreen to make the price range look fairer, when in reality the amount of tickets in the cheapest category was small (although not as small as the ones in December. I think there must have been about 4 tickets per show at $95. )

There is another fundamental problem I see here (which is indirectly linked to the high ticket prices): the marketing arm of the corporation is utter rubbish. If they want to charge these prices and play the corporate game, then they should be out there selling it. They didn't take advantage of the Exile rerelease success and just threw out Some Girls (probably for some contractual reason) as a side show later on instead of really building on Exile and possibly putting out a new album after it. Then with the first 50 and Counting shows and the movie, there was very little prime time marketing in the U.S. Same thing this time around. They may be going for the premium brand route but my best guess is that they can't be tossed to market this at the level that it's required.

I can see the tarp being rolled out for the upper levels and the $85 tickets becoming sweeter and sweeter! Watching the secondary sites in the next few days will be fascinating for me and the Stones greed will probably result in a lot of fans getting in for reasonable(ish) prices. I hope thousands do!

The upper decks are overflowing and it would take a herculean effort on the part of the band and venue to move thousands of people downstairs.

Maybe they should build the stage a little higher and move people upstairs?

Put the tarps on the lower deck? stu watching how stupid we are LOL

Marketing? There is not a single person from the most casual music consumers or the most dedicated fans who doesn't know this is happening.

I could give a shit if half the place is tarped - as long as I get to see them I'm happy. Eff everything else. For me it's still about the music - especially Emotional Rescue!!!

You'll give a shit when this mass apathy dissuades them from touring again afterwards!

They may be going for the premium brand route but my best guess is that they can't be tossed to market this at the level that it's required.

they also announced the shows FAR too late.

What was it - a month in advance?

That's insanely stupid if youre banking on tens of thousands of people making snap decisions on whether or not to fork out for the highest priced tickets in history.

And now they've left themselves with next to no time to repair the mess.
