CSULB Choir Gets What They Want – On Stage With The Rolling Stones

2013-04-25 ·  By  Editor

The CSULB Cole Conservatory Chamber Choir ail sing with Rolling Stones at the opening of their 50 And Counting tour at The Staples Center.

The Rolling Stones are in the midst of their 50th Anniversary Tour, and as they roll into Southern California for their Friday, May 3 performance at the Staples Center, they’ll be joined on stage for the iconic “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” by 26 members of the CSULB Cole Conservatory Chamber Choir. Dr. Jonathan Talberg, Director of Choral, Vocal and Opera Studies, is preparing the choir and will conduct them on stage with the Stones.

“If I had a dollar for every time I’ve said, ‘You can’t always get what you want’ to students over my 20-year teaching career I’d be a rich man,” said Talberg. “Now, amazingly, we get to sing it with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and the boys. I’ve always wanted to do a rock-n-roll concert with the choirs. I just can’t believe our first one is with one of the greatest bands of all time. It’s too bad we can’t go to the after party; we have to sing the Mozart REQUIEM the next day!”

This isn’t the first non-traditional appearance the Chamber Choir has made this year. In March, the Choir joined composer Eric Whitacre on the stage along with two other Southern California area choirs to perform with singers from more than 30 other countries via Skype. The performance was part of one of the extremely popular TED Talks, and the two You Tube videos of Whitacre’s talk and the combined live and internet choir performance have received more than 380,000 views.

Its amazing that the stage configuration is such that it may lead to seating availability spring up at the 11th hour at far ends of the arena.  Uncanny.

Bit unfair on those fans who dont live local to where the show is as they're maybe flying in and booking a hotel without a guaranteed ticket.

Probably worth the risk, though. Worse case scenario - you dont get an $85 ticket, but for a bit more you should be able to get one off a scalper near show time for less than face value. And, as you were prepared for an $85 ticket possibly being a nosebleed, paying a bit more for a nosebleed (or better) may not be so horrendous.

Still a circle jerk, though.

I don't give a fuck about the accents that the choir may or may not have. That's the last thing on my mind.

Says Lefsetz:

"It's a disaster.

And it's hiding in plain sight. All you've got to do is go to their site and see what's available, your jaw will drop.

Enthralled with the ancient British rockers, the mainstream press has completely dropped the ball on this story. So busy reporting last weekend's club gig, the sycophantic reporters refuse to do any...reporting. To see that the bottom just dropped out of the Stones business.

Yes, go to http://www.rollingstones.com

And click to "Get Tickets."

Then pull up May 3rd's gig at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, America's number two market, home to more poseurs than anywhere but the Cote d'Azur.

First you'll be stunned how seamlessly AXS works. We've been told for eons that Ticketmaster is an unbeatable champion. But AXS is faster, easier and just an all-around better experience.

So pick the May 3rd gig. If you can't navigate to this page, stop reading this now, you're too ignorant to get the points I'm going to be making anyway.

Select 2 seats. Don't allow for splits. There are frequently single seats available in good sections for the most desirable gigs.

Select "Best seat at any price level."

Then click on "Find Tickets."

Whew!

You can sit right down front!

But it gets better!

You can still get 8 seats together in desirable sections!

Which means...

Sales are horrific.

It's even worse for the May 20th gig. You can still get 8 seats together right down front!

How did this happen?

GREED!

Let me tell you how this works. AEG pays the Stones whether they sell out or they don't, whether anybody shows up or the hall is empty.

This is a far cry from the way business was done in the years the Stones became the "World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band."

Used to be there was a guarantee, and then a split after break even.

But then Michael Cohl revolutionized the business.

And then Bob Sillerman rolled up the promoters and the acts had a field day, raping big time promoters for huge guarantees.

And the small shows got squeezed out, only the big ones counted in the mind of the public. And the Internet burgeoned. And suddenly, scalping became rampant. Even via the eBay company StubHub, never mind by individuals speculating.

And the game was rigged. There were so many pre-sales and holdbacks that demand seemed to outstrip supply in all cases. So resale prices went through the roof!

And until 2008, everybody was loaded with cash, the rich still are, they want to go to the show not to see it, but to say they were there.

And Mick Jagger is pissed these people have more money than he does. He wants to fly private and vacation without the hoi polloi, so he needs to rip you off, he needs to get all that money!

That's what the inflated ticket prices are all about. Making sure scalpers don't get the markup.

But this time around, prices are so damn high the public is balking, which surprises even me, because this truly looks like the last tour. But what we've learned here is the mania surrounding recent Stones shows has been created by the press, there's just not that much demand, people cared more about Miley Cyrus and Beanie Babies. Yes, parents care more about their kids than decrepit rockers.

The initial shows last fall did well. Because of the mainstream press around the marketing angle of fifty years...

But just like the Cream comeback was an event in London and a dud in New York City, the bloom is off the rose, there's no story, people just don't care.

Do they care for $100?

A lot more.

Then again, the Stones have been doing weak business for eons. You could always get a ticket.

So where does this leave us?

In the land of Kid Rock. Where everybody scales back, where we have a reset, where even the execs take less.

Because what once was is no longer.

The Stones have jumped the shark.

And that means most of the other classic rock acts have too.

Furthermore, if you think the Stones are phenomenal in concert, you haven't seen them, or are used to the Grateful Dead. They lock on occasionally, otherwise, it's rough.

So if you're against paperless ticketing, you're a weasel. That's what delivered $600 tickets, fear that the scalpers would take too much of the profit.

And if you're against airline style variable pricing, you're part of the problem too. Because if we had such a system, AEG could lower the price and sell out. But now they can't.

Oh, they'll find some way to fill the hall. The biggest stars paper, from Springsteen to Kenny Chesney.

And a loss is in the offing, unless the Stones give back.

But they won't.

But maybe they will. Dainty dropped out because he couldn't come up with the money. Maybe if AEG does a great job they'll get a better, profitable deal in the rest of the world.

Yes, at some point, everybody drops out. The deal becomes too expensive. Not only for the promoters, but the public.

But this is what income inequality has wrought. Acts pissed that record sales have dropped have raised ticket prices so high the public has now cried UNCLE!"

He's spot on, for the most part. I wasn't surprised they sold the tickets for the 2012 shows, but only because it was 2-3 shows and 40,000 tickets per continent, because the shows took place in their richest market and because there had been a five year gap.

And significantly because they'd (cleverly) banked on the number of would be scalpers buying up most of the tickets instead of real fans (and the promoters allowing them free rein to do so)- and letting the scalpers and brokers take the strain of trying to fill the venues while the band sat back and counted their $25 million.

Those prices were unsustainable outside of a couple of 'special events'. What has surprised me though was that while I thought they'd struggle to fill venues in some markets, I really didn't imagine they'd be doing so poorly in a city like Los Angeles, considering the place is crammed full of their target audience - ie, millionaire celebrities. To paraphrase a song about another city, if they cant make it there, they wont make it anywhere.

Said it before, but the 'multiple night residency' concept isnt workable when youre charging people those prices.  Prince filled the 02 for 21 nights in 2007. The Stones couldnt even sell out three. Most people simply cant afford one show, let alone multiple shows.

Could be a very anti-climactic and embarrassing end to their years as a touring act unless they choose to become more reasonable in their demands, but their legacy in the closing chapter of their career could be one of a monster that became so out of touch and greedy that it ended up devouring itself.

Is there still time to do what they did in Germany in 2003 and add AC/DC to the bill to sell a few thousand extra tickets? Smiley

They better do something!

And here they thought the Mick Taylor factor was going to allow them to justify these prices.  These next few days will surely be interesting to see what they to stop the bleeding on the current ticket sales.

I can see the tarp being rolled out for the upper levels and the $85 tickets becoming sweeter and sweeter! Watching the secondary sites in the next few days will be fascinating for me and the Stones greed will probably result in a lot of fans getting in for reasonable(ish) prices. I hope thousands do!

It's really amazing that they added all those extra shows in cities BEFORE any of them even sold out.  3 shows in Chicago with rocket high prices?  The logic here is shocking.  I was there for that arctic cold show in Chicago in 2006.  The first night the tarps were used.  They are in essence doing that again: overstaying their welcome with unreachable prices.  I really don't want to see tarps in any of the shows I go to.  With only days to go, it's sinking in just how much they just shot themselves in the foot.

See how behind I am!!.  Was gonna post this when I got home from work and you already had, Mel-LOL

Could be a very anti-climactic and embarrassing end to their years as a touring act unless they choose to become more reasonable in their demands, but their legacy in the closing chapter of their career could be one of a monster that became so out of touch and greedy that it ended up devouring itself.

Or it could be I was right a year ago when this whole 50 and Counting thing was floated, when I said that if it wasn't
a joke, it was Mick's deliberate plan to bring this ridiculously vapid reactionary charade to an end asap, without
his fingerprints being all over the murder weapon.

Mick confirmed this when he wrote, "I was piloting a plane, all the passengers were drunk and insane, so I crash
landed in a Louisiana swamp, and shot up a horde of zombies, but I come out on top"

Mick wants the Stones over so he can do other things. That's how simple it was over a year ago when he hatched
this plan, that's how simple it is now. Well done Mick! Thank you!

The current Stones have become a disgrace to their own brilliant legacy, a constipated cultural embarrassment,
and it will be a great day when they formally end, so that their legend can get back to growing, instead of being
constantly chipped away at by Mick, so that he can escape it.

The upper decks are overflowing and it would take a herculean effort on the part of the band and venue to move thousands of people downstairs.

Maybe they should build the stage a little higher and move people upstairs?
