What would be the incentive for the promoter to add the Stones to an already sold out show?

I would think there would be some recording or TV rights involved that could profit both the promoter and the Stones.

Well there's always a chance that the band actually wants to play at Glastonbury (well, everyone except Charlie) because it's a cool place to be and a good place to measure your strength against other bands. I mean: songbook and legacy wise the Stones own the rest of the lineup. But playing among bands in their prime is a good way to show some flexing muscles. A daring move in a way.

This is just how Glastonbury operates. They sell tickets, people buy up all the tickets because they know it's going to be a good show, then the organizers put together a good show.

If you're a fan of just 1 band you probably wouldn't be buying tickets, if you like a lot of good music and don't mind 3 days in the mud then you can buy tickets and be assured of a bill full of bands you want to see.

Note that while there will be extensive coverage of the Glastonbury festival on BBC-TV and on BBC-interactive channels over the entire weekend, there's no guarantee that the Stones' set will be televised or if it is, if there'll be more than a few songs broadcast. It may even be shown as a 'delayed' broadcast.....a lot of it is down to the artist, they're not 'obliged' to allow their performance to be televised.

As it seems the Stones will be playing Hyde Park after Glastonbury, it wouldnt surprise me if they chose to impose a lot of restrictions on how much of their set can be screened so as to leave some element of 'surprise' for their London audiences.

Anyway, for anyone still wanting to go to Glastonbury, no doubt you know that the event sold out several months ago. Sold out that is, in the sense that all tickets were snapped up by members of the public who paid deposits. However, registration is now open again as some tickets will be made available next month as some of the people who successfully registered will have withdrawn their interest and not paid the balance of their purchase.

You can register here - https://glastonbury.seetickets.com/Registration/Register

Hope they do they dead butterfly thing at Hyde Park again, I loved that….

The show's not REALLY sold out as such. 140,000 or so people have paid a deposit. Now that the line up is announced, they have a week or two to pay the balance.

The worse the line up is, as far as the ticket buyer is concerned, the more tickets will go back on sale.

Its also in the promoters best interest to maintain their reputation for attracting top name acts every year. Pretty much all of the biggest rock acts on the planet have played it in recent years - with one exception. I think Michael eavis can now retire a happy man. Its the gig hes always wanted.

Its worth mentioning also that the Stones dont get their usual multi-million pounds a gig deal for this event. They get paid the standard rate for a headliner - which is probably about 10% of what they'd normally make for a concert.

The Stones have been rumored to be playing Glastonbury for a long time now. So much so that I registered for tickets for this back in September 2012. I never did buy/deposit the tickets because I was unsure if the finances would be available and also a festival would be nice but maybe too uncomfortable in the crowded heat, so I passed. But this is the info they sent me if anyone wants to still try to get the tickets using my registration. If you have any luck, let me know!

Nice.  Considering how involved he was in last year's gigs maybe Mick and Keith will call Bill over to play the cowbell intro on "Honky Tonk Woman."  Don't suck my cock

That reunion would be wasted on that crowd...a crowd who could give 2 Fs about the Stones and whether they were there to play or not...

But...if you choose to go ( see Ellen's VERY generous ... offer above) it would be about $325.00 ttl for the 10-12  songs they will play ( an estimate).
War horses couldn't drag me away I hope they play Satisfaction...JJF...and SMU... War horses couldn't drag me away

I am willing to bet it's a better crowd than your average arena show these days.

Funny that...I would probobly feel really old at this sort of thing ( i am 49)...
but when i saw the crowd at the 12/12/12/ concert...

I felt like kicking everyone in the ass with my size 12 boots and yelling
" WTF are you people here for?!?"

Any show i go to now is like 500 tops, with a few exceptions...Prince...anytime...anywhere...
Others...if maybe at an indoor Theater... 2000ish capacity sorta places...
an amphitheater if i REALLY like the artist ( not a showcase w/ 4 or 5 bands)  and only if  i don't need a sitter.

In fairness, youre paying £205 for five days of music and hundreds of bands. Not just one act.

So even if the Stones play a half length set - it still works out at much the same ratio of £ per song as they asked for 3 months ago!

Generally, Glastonbury headliners play a full length set or thereabouts. I'd expect the Stones to play around two hours.

The crowd's attitude to the Stones will be much the same as it is for any other headliner - after all, every year they buy the tickets and then expect Eavis and co to deliver top performers.

If anything, it'll be more positive as a generation of concert goers have been priced out of seeing a Rolling Stones concert and this is a novelty to them. There wont be too many jaded fans complaining that its not like 1972 anymore.

So, an announcement next Wednesday (3rd April), it would appear.

If nothing else,  I can plan my summer vacation once I know when they are not in Europe. I think cancelling the holidays for a Stones gig would get me in some trouble with the fam..

But it seriously looks like we all get another chance to go see the Stones. That alone brings a grin to my face.
