Aside from, you know, blues music, what has the American South ever given The Rolling Stones?

Apparently, England’s Oldest Hitmakers don’t think Virginia and surrounding below-Mason-Dixon-Line locales are so sweet after all, as the band’s long-awaited 50 and Counting Tour itinerary — announced this morning — includes not a single Southern date; not even Texas or Florida (which arguably don’t even count anyway). You’d think the band would at least light up Atlanta on this nine-date trek, which kicks off next month at L.A.’s Staples Center. No dice.

At press time, Chicago (on May 28) is the closest Rolling Stones road-trip destination for General Lee drivers. Even Canada — a country that once threatened to incarcerate Keith Richards — is getting a 2013 Stones show.

What gives?

Certainly it takes the widespread perennial adulation of millions to persist as rock ’n’ roll’s biggest band for five decades and counting, and there are certainly a lot of “people” in the South, to be sure. But as anyone aware of the Stone’s eye-watteringly, one-percenter-exclusive ticket prices (or anyone who’s ever seen the eye-openingly embarrassing 2001 VH1 documentary Being Mick, or watched the tour-announcement promo clip above) can attest, Mick Jagger is anything but a man of the people. But it’s a band’s body of work that counts. And few bands artistically owe a greater debt of gratitude to the South than The Rolling Stones, who’ve built a musical dynasty recasting Southern legends from Robert Johnson to Gram Parsons in their own swaggering image.

If recent reports of the band plotting 19 U.S. dates are true, that leaves a potential 10 dates in cities still to be announced. Let’s cross our fingers and hope that at least one of them lands the band somewhere in the region before they completely fossilize.

No,haven't heard anything else. But these guys go to all the big shows. So they know their stuff.

Just looking at that tour schedule, especially the early shows, and it would appear that if theyre going to add second nights in some of those venues theyre going to have to be scheduled quite some time apart with other shows in the middle. Either that or Mick is going to do something he hasn't done for a decade and sing on back to back nights.

LA is 'early May', probably around the 2nd. Oakland is the 5th, San Jose the 8th, Vegas the 11th and Anaheim on the 15th.

Unless they come back a week or two later, the only option for a second Vegas show is the 13th. Theres no window for a second San Jose show around the same time as the one theyve announced. Likewise with Oakland. They could play LA on May 1st and 3rd or maybe Oakland on 3rd and 5th instead., but thats about it. A second Toronto show would have to take place prior to the first one, otherwise theyd have to come back in June. No problems with adding extra shows soon after the dates in Chicago, Boston and Philly though. Plenty of availability, although in Philly's case, June 16, 20 and 21 are the only available options in the same week as the concert scheduled for the 18th.

Odd bit of scheduling.

I agree, I don't seem them adding many more west coast dates with the scheduling so far. Could maybe add the 18th in Vegas to keep it on a weekend. Plus they already have two shows scheduled in the LA and Bay areas. I think they could add a couple/few cities as well as the second dates in Philly/Chi/Boston and maybe Toronto if they are actually going to play 18 dates. There are a lot of gaps in June with the current schedule.

In many ways, its one of the worst Stones gigs ever.

Yet in equally as many ways, its one of their greatest.

Its absolutely, without question, their most iconic, famous and romanticized. And probably their most photographed.

Every time I've ever set foot in that park, I get that 'tingle'.

What an utterly incredible weekend that must have been. A complete rollercoaster of emotions.

Not sure if you can get to the front. This is the map from viagogo (a lot of yesterday's presale tickets are up for sale there). There are a gold circle and diamond circle at the front, and the VIP category includes either gold or diamond tickets plus a Barclays bar pass.
