20 YEARS AGO: MICK JAGGER’S ‘WANDERING SPIRIT’ RELEASED
by Matthew Wilkening

...
Atlantic

It took him three tries, but on Feb. 8, 1993 Mick Jagger finally released a solo album Rolling Stones fans could fully get behind: ‘Wandering Spirit.’

On his previous two efforts — 1985′s ‘She’s the Boss’ and 1987′s ‘Primitive Cool’ — Jagger was seemingly too concerned with reaching a wider, pop-loving audience. Perhaps this was to prove he didn’t need longtime Stones partner Keith Richards, with whom he was feuding with quite publicly at the time.

But after the pair mended fences to release 1989′s ‘Steel Wheels’ and mount a year-long Stones tour, Jagger was free to express himself without any such pressure. As he put it, “I was very relaxed about this record. No overall atmosphere of hostility. The rest of the Stones had all made solo LP’s. Charlie (Watts) made his Charlie Parker album. Keith made his second solo album and Ronnie (Wood) made a record. Even Bill (Wyman) made a record. In the process of writing my record there were a couple of songs where I said, ‘That’s going to sound great with the Stones,’ so I won’t use it.”

Although ‘Wandering Spirit’ thankfully sees Jagger abandoning the slick keyboard-tinged sounds of his previous records for a raw, guitar-based palette, he doesn’t consider it a straight-up rock album: “If you look at it, there are only maybe three rock songs on it in the traditional form. The rest is R&B, or country, or gospel influenced, or rockabilly, or whatever.”

Indeed, the album showcases Jagger’s abilities in those genres quite nicely, from the covers of R&B classics such as Bill Withers’ ‘Use Me’ and ‘Think’ (made famous by James Brown) to the country-leaning ‘Hang On to Me Tonight’ and the gospel-inspired chorus of the title track. It also finds him stubbornly (and quite successfully) sticking to his love of dance-rock with the album’s lead single, ‘Sweet Thing.’

The only way the album could be considered a failure was if Jagger’s primary goal was to once again avoid clashing with his lead collaborator, in this case producer Rick Rubin. The pair apparently bumped heads more than once during the recording process. As Rubin told the Los Angeles Times, “At one point while we were making the record, Mick pulled me out of the control room and talked to me in the hallway… one of the things he told me in that conversation was I was worse than Keith (Richards). I took that as a compliment. That was the nature of the relationship, and I definitely think good things came out of it.”

Interestingly, there was reportedly another, completely different album created during this time period. Jagger recorded 13 tracks of rough-hewn blues classics with a group known as the Red Devils in a marathon one-day recording session in May 1992. So far only one song from those sessions, ‘Checking Up On My Baby,’ was released, as part of Jagger’s 2007 ‘The Very Best of…” collection.

As recently as 1997, Rubin was still lobbying publicly for the full record, apparently named ‘King King,’ to be released: “It’s incredible, (but) it’s up to Mick. He’s the artist… he gets to do what he wants to do. But it’s great, and I hope it comes out.”

“What rap did that was impressive was to show there are so many tone-deaf people out there,” he says. “All they need is a drum beat and somebody yelling over it and they’re happy. There’s an enormous market for people who can’t tell one note from another.” - Keef

The album is a must-own. It's lots of fun to turn it up and let 'er rip. It does look like it's out of print though, so find a cheap copy on Ebay or at a flea market.

20 years - christ. That would be about right. He played two songs from it on Saturday Night Live the same week as the Webster Hall gig.

Will have to dig it out again - its a very good record. Definitely his best solo album (although I think 'Goddess in the Doorway' tends to get a bit overlooked unfairly)

A lot of people would love Rick Rubin to produce a Stones album, but it'll almost certainly never happen. Rubin is on record as saying how the experience of producing Jagger was the most anti-climactic of all the big name acts he's worked with. He said something along the lines of Mick being so surrounded by yes-men pandering to his every whim that he couldn't deal with his producer coming to him and telling him 'you're capable of better lyrics than this'....

I agree, great record… Jagger seems to have been a bit like people like Michael Jackson at the time. Recording in lots of studios, spending massive amounts of cash. Rubin was the only thing Jagger did right in his solo efforts, and it shows, this record is kick ass!!! Jagger learned to roll with the changing recording climate, they made A Bigger Bang on the cheap, knowing full well, the days of big sellers was over!!! It's hard to beleive, but there was a time artists would sink millions into making an album. nowadays not many artists even make that much in sales…

I won tickets on the radio to see a videocast of that concert he gave for the album release. Only time I ever won anything on the radio. I forget where it was, a small place dontown Atlanta but it was great. When we got there it was sponsored by Labatts I think. They were giving out all the free beer you could drink! It was a cool show. 20 years Wow!! They also gave out free cds. Very fun album that I haven't heard in a long time.

I haven't heard that CD in a long time.  But, I remember some of the songs reminded me of gospel music.

Anyways, I love the front cover!  Micky!  You have definitely got it going on!

I loved the diversity of it as opposed to his other solo efforts but when you listen to it, you can almost feel that, apart from Sweet Thing, his heart wasn't really in it. The songs are actually some of the best songs he's ever put together but there is that same type of vibe of resistance he put up against Voodoo Lounge. I just don't think his heart was ever completely into it. At that time, Rick Rubin's style was to go very raw and get some very core sounds out of records. Mick didn't seem to totally buy into it so you get something a bit soft in the end. The best song in terms of the energy and his heart being into it is Sweet Thing and it sounds like the one song Mick got his way with. Nonetheless, I think that even with the tension, that song would have sounded worse on any one of his other albums.

If you could have somehow, someway taken Wandering Spirit and combined it with Talk is Cheap and had The Stones record it. It would have been the best Stones album ever in history without a doubt.

I have always thought the combo idea would have been a great Stones LP.

Wandering into Cheap.

The problem I have with it is you'd have Mick singing songs like How I Wish and Could Have Stood You Up.
I want Keith singing those songs.

But then you would have had Mick singing Take It So Hard with The Boys backing him. Damn! That had to really piss off Mick that Keef released that song solo.

"Talk is Cheap" was recorded in 1987-88. It pre-dated 'Steel Wheels'.

Presume you mean 'Main Offender' which was recorded around the same time as 'Wandering Spirit' and came out about 3-4 months before it.

Good series of solo albums around that time. Ronnie's "Slide On This" - which came out just after Keith's - was a pretty solid effort, too.

Then again, Mick singing "You Dont Move Me" from 'Talk is Cheap' would have been quite funny  !!

Ok, so Wandering Offender.
I still need Keith singing "Wicked As It Seems"...and they would have to can "Love Is Strong" because of a conflict.
Demon? Keith needs to sing that too

I'm starting to lose faith in this hypothetical project...

Good album.  Several songs on there shine.  And yeah, you can't help but wish sometimes that much of it didn't get on to a Stones record, mixed with Main Offender.

Can't figure how I feel about Handsome Molly......
