2013 New Orleans Jazz Fest to welcome Fleetwood Mac, Black Keys, Billy Joel, Frank Ocean, Jill Scott, Dave Matthews Band

...
The 2013 New Orleans Jazz Fest will welcome Fleetwood Mac to the Fair Grounds this spring.

By Keith Spera, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune NOLA.com
on January 17, 2013 at 9:20 AM

The 2013 New Orleans Jazz Fest will feature Fleetwood Mac, the Black Keys, Billy Joel, the Dave Matthews Band, Frank Ocean, Widespread Panic, B.B. King, Hall & Oates, John Mayer and Willie Nelson. They'll join hundreds of Louisiana musicians at the Fair Grounds for the 44th annual Jazz Fest, formally the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival presented by Shell, from April 26-28 and May 2-5.

One familiar name not on the schedule: The Neville Brothers. As first reported on nola.com this morning, Aaron Neville has left the family band to focus on his solo career. As a result, he is booked at the Fair Grounds on the final Sunday with his own quintet. His brothers Art, Charles and Cyril will perform without him as The Nevilles on the first Sunday.

Fleetwood Mac, a group that knows a thing or two about internal band politics, makes its Jazz Fest debut in 2013. The band's most recent New Orleans performance was at the New Orleans Arena in June 2009; guitarist Lindsey Buckingham performed a solo show at the French Quarter nightclub One Eyed Jacks in August 2012. The current incarnation of Fleetwood Mac includes Buckingham, drummer Mick Fleetwood, bassist John McVie and vocalist Stevie Nicks, all of whom date to the band's mid-'70s classic period.

The Black Keys performed a free show at Woldenberg Park along the Mississippi Riverfront as part of the NCAA men's basketball tournament in March 2012. Guitarist/vocalist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney formed the Black Keys in Akron, Ohio, in 2001. After a decade of dogged touring, the duo's stripped-down rock 'n' roll, heavily influenced by the raw electric blues of the Mississippi Delta, finally connected with a broad audience.

The Dave Matthews Band is no stranger to the Fair Grounds, having made multiple appearances over the years. Matthews and company last deployed to the fest in 2009. Widespread Panic has also made frequent stops at the Fair Grounds.

Joel performed a rain-soaked set at the 2008 Jazz Fest.

John Mayer was initially booked as 2012's first Sunday Acura Stage closer. He agreed to move to an earlier time slot to accommodate the late addition of Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, but ended up canceling his entire tour due to a recurring throat ailment.

Jazz Fest is owned by the nonprofit New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation; proceeds fund a variety of cultural enrichment and education programs and free festivals. The festival is produced by Quint Davis's Festival Productions Inc.-New Orleans and AEG Live

Tickets for the 2013 Jazz Fest are on sale now. Early-bird daily tickets are $45 plus service charges. The price increases to $50 later this month. Tickets at the gate will be $65, the same as in 2012.

Single-day tickets are weekend specific. Tickets are available at nojazzfest.com and ticketmaster.com, at all Ticketmaster outlets or by calling 800.745.3000. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Jazz Fest ticket office located at the New Orleans Arena Box Office. All general admission Jazz Fest tickets are subject to additional service fees and handling charges, which are generally the lowest when paying with cash in person at the arena box office.

In addition to single-day tickets, Jazz Fest's various VIP ticket packages are also on sale.

The Big Chief VIP Experience includes numerous amenities, including daily admission with re-entry privileges, access to covered viewing stands with seating at the Acura and Gentilly stages, and a private hospitality lounge. Big Chief passes are $1,125 for the three days of the first weekend, $1,275 for the four days of the second weekend.

The Grand Marshal VIP pass allows access to upfront, reserved, standing-room-only viewing areas at the festival's big three stages -- Acura, Gentilly and Congo Square -- and in-out privileges. Grand Marshal passes are $750 first weekend, $850 second weekend.

The Krewe of Jazz Fest pass grants access to a covered viewing area with folding seats at the Acura Stage only, and allows for re-entry privileges. Krewe of Jazz Fest passes are $550 first weekend, $600 for the second weekend.

VIP ticket prices include all service charges and fee except for a $25 delivery fee. VIP tickets are available in limited numbers, as are parking passes for the VIP tickets, which are available at an additional cost.

Also, tickets are available for the 15th annual Jazz & Heritage Foundation Gala, April 25, 2013 at the New Orleans Hilton Riverside Hotel. The gala, sponsored by the non-profit foundation that owns the Jazz Fest, supports the Don Jamison Heritage School of Music, a free music instruction program that teaches 85 students each week. This year's gala theme is "Glass House Reunion," a salute to the South Saratoga Street nightclub that hosted the likes of Kermit Ruffins, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and the Rebirth Brass Band, all of whom will perform at the gala.

Gala tickets are $500 and include passes to all seven days of Jazz Fest. Go to jazzandheritage.org or call 504.558.6100 for gala tickets.

Yeah, but I'm glad Jazz Fest ain't getting the big mega-draws this year like they did with Springsteen last year.

The festival grounds just ain't big enough to hold big names on that level.

I wish they would have no big name headliners....OR have them have some association with Jazz, NOLA music. I've been down for four Jazzfests, haven't been back since my wife and I had children. 2014 seems like it will be possible.

With the exception of Willie and Jimmy, I think it would be better without the remainder of the headliners. IMO.

Bingo, I agree to a certain extent.

Headliners keep the interest high for most people, but I'm glad to see they're not having any mega acts like the Stones, Springsteen, McCartney, etc.
You know the layout of the Fair Grounds, and it just can't hold those size crowds.

Last year, Springsteen was an absolute clusterfuck.
I couldn't get within sight of even a viewing screen, much less a vision line to the stage.
I also witnessed EMS fighting through that crowd to get a stretcher to a patient.

I wonder if Quint Davis learned his lesson from the Springsteen experience last year, but I doubt he'd ever admit it.

Coachella is a festival more geared towards The Stones. Kind of like Bonneroo. Jazzfest should eliminate the popular white boy bands.  Jazzfest IMO is the coolest musical event in the states, except, as Edith said, when it gets out of hand.   Nolte - The Rocks Off patron saint
