There was no evidence, that I could tell, of a firesale for the NY/NJ shows last year. I know there were exceptions, but generally speaking they filled the house for no less than the face value of the tickets.

Yep. Likewise with London for the most part. But consider the fact that a couple of weeks before said shows that one ticket agency alone (viagogo, I think) had something like 10,000 tickets left for Newark and London. All on sale for way above what was an already hefty face value price.

If they filled the houses (and the London show I attended didnt appear to have too many empty seats that I could see) it was because these shysters fucked up.  As well as the fact that when they bought up the tickets to begin with, there were enough gullible people around who panic bought the most overpriced tickets in the venue (eg, the £400 nosebleeds in London - truly awful seats) instead of holding out until something better popped up.

The bottom line is that the band and the promoters rely on the public's naivety and gullibility as well as a system that allows anyone to buy a ticket and then re-sell it for above its face value.

There's a lot of profit potential in the lowest priced tickets.

But what I saw on December 15th on the PPV made me damn proud that they could still put on a show worthy of my hard earned money. I watched the concert with 6 people who had never seen the band live before and weren't exactly Stones fanatics. They loved it. They thought Jagger was amazing and the overall show was superb.

I agree. The show I saw in London was terrific and beyond anything I thought they were still capable of. But theres a big difference between half a dozen people watching a PPV for $45 between them and a few beers in the fridge and each of them paying ten or even twenty times that amount apiece to be there in the flesh (with all the other costs added on, like travelling etc)

That's a big demand to make off an audience. If an artist is saying 'I'm worth paying $800 to see' then that (justifiably) raises the bar in terms of audience expectation regarding their performance.  They simply cant have it both ways.

Whether any act on the planet at any time in history can live up to that is a matter of opinion. Personally, I dont think anyone can, no matter how great they are now or were 40 years ago.

Fair enough G.

800.00 a ticket is insane. Figures our band would not only be the greatest, but also the greediest.  Shit!

I am however, prepared to shell it out for one last chance to sit in the same room with them and see a live show. I am insane; and proud of it!   Ouch!

Assuming the AEG story is True...
If they gave the Stones what they want as a guarantee, will that mean they will have to raise the ticket prices?
I'm sure AEG takes into account a % of tickets that won't be sold.

...but they own a number of venues (like Staples) so maybe that will cut the actual cost of promoting the show, while also reducing their profit on their tax return which makes it a win situation for everyone except the government (US tax law loophole).

So this may mean some shows might have to be shifted to AEG venues if they aren't booked already.

I wonder what kind of delay this may create for the tour?
Who stole this one? (Seriously) Are you fucking serious? Perverted Mick You rock! War horses couldn't drag me away

An outside promoter renting Staples Center would pay around $75,000 - at least that was the going rate a few years ago. I doubt AEG is paying a rental fee on it's own venues. Bringing the Stones to AEG venues across the country could reduce associated costs by several hundred thousand dollars or more.

Actually, they would because they would have separate corporations for their venues and their promotion business. But, it's all on paper so there could be a tax write off. In reality, they would save money.

AEG Live Grabs Stones

12:12 PM Wednesday 3/20/13

The Rolling Stones will mount an 18-show arena tour in May and June with AEG Live at the promoter helm, sources told Pollstar shortly after the deal was sealed. The exact routing is still being confirmed but an announcement is expected in early April.

AEG Live takes the reins of the long-rumored tour from Virgin Live, a joint venture formed between Australia’s Paul Dainty and Virgin Group’s Richard Branson last fall to produce and promote the band’s 50th anniversary run.

Though the Virgin Live venture successfully did the Stones’ brief November and December tour, it appears plans – and likely financing – to remain on board for a more traditional tour fell short.

Enter AEG Live, which also bid on the earlier tour.  It’s not known what kind of financial deal was struck, but it was struck quickly – one source told Pollstar the call from the Stones’ camp came early March 19, and the agreement between the parties came together before anyone had time to call out for lunch.

If so, it makes a bold statement that it’s business as usual for AEG Live, less than one week after the announcement that parent Anschutz Entertainment Group is off the market and former president/CEO Tim Leiweke had resigned.  And with the speed the tour was agreed to, how nimbly it can move when a re-engaged Phil Anschutz is needed to cut a check.

Dates are still being locked down, but Mick and the boys made it known they are interested in no more than an 18-show, two-month outing, which will happen in May and June. The number of cities isn’t confirmed, other than they will be major markets and the 18 shows will include multiple-night stands.

It isn’t the first time, of course, The Rolling Stones have switched up promoters between tours, regardless of history.  Michael Cohl worked closely with the band for years after winning a promotion deal that the late Bill Graham expected to continue.

And though it’s not known if Cohl was in the running for the 50th anniversary shows, his separation from Live Nation in 2008 included a provision that his non-compete would not preclude the Canadian promoter and Broadway impresario from making a bid.

AEG declined to comment.  Where this leaves Virgin Live isn’t clear. Dainty, who with Branson formed Virgin Live and continues to run Dainty Corp. from Melbourne, Australia, wasn’t immediately available to comment.

"There will be a lot more to say about Virgin Live soon but, for now, it’s all about the Stones … ,” Dainty teased in October when the partnership and initial Stones dates were announced, adding that a global force was in the works.

Announcment in early April...they better not take longer...
That is going to be tricky with the NHL AND NBA play-offs and championships...
as far as many major markets go...NY is safe...Oakland/SF as well...Vegas...a sure thing it seems...Other major markets are tricky...
UNLESS the Stones book ASAP then the play-offs will have to be scheduled around them.

I'd imagine venues are 'held' LONG before they're announced officially. Lots of logistics to be worked out (hotels etc) before any tour can be announced. Its possible the delay might see a small number of gigs being switched but I cant imagine it'll make much difference.

Remember the time frame for the shows last year. Tour announced mid-October. First London show 25th November. Five weeks after the on-sale date. So, early April is probably still ok for shows in mid-May.

Charlie interview on BBC Radio yesterday

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p016mdg4

Basically its done to promote his upcoming club gigs in London next week, but he more or less confirms that the Stones will play Glastonbury by saying that while he doesn't want to play the festival, the other three do.

AEG Live also 'just happen' to be the promoters of the Barclaycard British Summer Time Hyde Park festival that I reckon the Stones will be playing at in early July.

I don't think that's much of a coincidence!

Has that twit from showbiz411.com edited his 'exclusive' story on them being promoted by Dainty & Branson yet?
