Is Lady Jane one of anyone else's favorite Stones' songs?

I don't know what the Stones motive or idea was in doing it; It seems Mick views the song as a bit of a joke, but the actual song itself sounds very powerful, moving, romantic, genuine. I don't think any other Rock N' Roll band could actually make an Elizabethan Ballad sound as authentic and as subtly haunting as they did. And I don't even see a reason WHY the Stones did it. I might be wrong but I don't think Medieval Music was really that big in 1966 and yet here the Stones were making a ballad fit for the court of Henry VIII.

The beautiful music of it, the simplicity in it, seems to take one's mind back to times long ago, when England was a land of forests, little huts and trees, and all they had were simple instruments to play pretty songs. It sounds like something right out of an ancient musical book from the 1600s...I don't think even The Beatles could've accomplished something so odd and yet so beautiful as Lady Jane.

I love the song, The Stones were influenced by The Beatles use of classical music instruments in their song (Penny Lane,etc) Remembering that the Stones were a Blues band & how they ended up in this area I would imagine was the songwriting that Andrew got after Mick & Keith about, & Brian very a very talented musician who could pick up just about any instrument & it was him that made the big difference in this classical type sound, same with Ruby Tuesday.
The Stones & The Beatles were very close friends despite this crazy thing about being rivals, like Keith said, they would phone The Beatles & ask them what time their single was coming out, hold it back 3 Months whatever, there was this big thing that they would never clash.

what you will find about The Stones song itself is good trivia and whatnot... I just read the wiki stuff on the woman the song is about, nothing short of amazing, and for me, brings way more insight inro the song. I knew only a little, never bothered to learn more, until this thread... if you are so inspired, here's the wiki link.

Thats not the same Lady Jane.

King Henry VIII's second wife was Anne Boleyn who was found guilty of treason and beheaded in 1536.

He then married Jane Seymour - who by all accounts was the real love of his life (she was the only one of his six wives to be buried with him) - and who died in childbirth in 1537 after giving birth to the future King Edward VI.

Edward VI died at the age of 15 in 1553 and there was a dispute over his successor. He had nominated Lady Jane Grey in preference to his two (half) sisters (later Mary I and Elizabeth I) but after a nine-day reign the crown passed to the 'natural' heir, Mary I and, as was the custom, the loser literally got the 'chop'!

The Stones song relates to the relationship between Henry, Anne Boleyn and Jane Seymour.

they did a nice job on "New Faces" as well on Voodoo Lounge.

Nowhere near as good a song of course, but one that was quite clearly influenced by the earlier record.
