other than the Ernie Watts Quartet, this is probably the only thing even closely related to the Stones I will get to post about this year.
The flyer said 9 so I walked by the club and to 7-11 for coffee, get back and hear Get Off My Cloud and a schedule posted at the door with an 8:45 start time so I go inside and The Walcotts are starting Sympathy For The Devil. They are a trio; piano, acoustic guitar and mandolin. The piano sounds very true to the original, the solo is done on mandolin. I was just thinking awhile back how the best way the Stones could make this sound decent would be to really strip it down.
Sets are short, club is mostly dead til Tsar takes the stage and the energy level kicks up a bit. Most of the crowd stayed gathered around the bar. It was a free night and most people were there just to see their friends play. Clem Burk, drummer from Blondie was in attendance.
There was a lot of sheet music, lyric sheets and vocal flubs but it was a pretty fun night, lots of good music, most of the bands put in a decent effort at coming up with good material.
THE WALCOTTS
Get Off My Cloud Sympathy For The Devil
THE SISTER RUBY BAND (they had a sax player)
Sister Morphine Ventilator Blues
PAUL CHESNE BAND (a sax player and trumpet player show up and play with many of the bands)
Miss You Beast Of Burden Hate It When You Leave
TSAR (4 piece rock band)
2,000 Man Let's Spend The Night Together
MICHAEL DES BARRES (female backup singer shows up and stays for the next 3 acts along with horn section)
Jumpin' Jack Flash Brown Sugar Happy Birthday To Keith
BRIAN WHELAN & MITCH MARINE WITH SPECIAL GUEST CHRIS SHIFLETT AND THE DEAD PEASANTS
Little T&A Bitch Rip This Joint Happy
BRETT ANDERSON (of THE DONNAS)
Going To A Go Go (only about a minute) Under My Thumb Live With Me
The Donnas are a fun band but the lead vocals aren't strong enough for this material
***EDITED TO ADD****
HARLAN
Time Is On My Side (slow soulful version, a lot of people were bummed he only did one song)
DUSTBOWL REVIVAL
Dear Doctor You Can't Always Get What You Want
(the lineup is always slightly different every time I see them, this time they had a 4 piece horn section with at least one man I have never seen before, mandolin, violin, bass, acoustic guitar/harmonica, drums, 8 people on stage total, unfortunately singer/washboard player Caitlin Doyle wasn't present, she has an awesome voice and amazing stage presence)
Dear Doctor was done slow, then they sped it up at the end. YCAGWYW is a setlist regular, running anywhere from 12 to 15 minutes, last night they really dragged it out, sounded amazing.
