Or if he was invited he declined. He didn't want to sit in NYC for a week just to perform 3 songs.

I thought Taylor's website had said he had cancelled the Spain date, or were those internet rumors?

I'm still gonna say he might be there to play in Newark, maybe didn't want to do the other two gigs.

Exactly. The London shows strived to prove that they were worth the money by going that extra stretch that no Stones show had done before.. but tonight's show didn't reach this level

NY Times Review:

In a filmed montage of celebrity adoration before the start of the Rolling Stones show at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Saturday night, Iggy Pop had a good line. He was remembering seeing the band play in the late ‘60s, and he said, approvingly, that hearing Keith Richards’s guitar sound back then felt like being hit with a dead mackerel.
Related

A few times during the concert, you kind of knew what he meant. The sound arrived in most of “Midnight Rambler” and parts of “Sympathy for the Devil”: dull-toned, loud, heavy, resonant, forceful riffing. It didn’t happen during Mr. Richards’s processions around the stage, which took him halfway into the arena floor. (The stage fit inside a pair of giant open lips, from the band’s logo; the rounded runway jutting out of it, encircling part of the audience, represented the tongue.) It happened when he stayed local, when he and Ron Wood, the band’s other guitarist, came in close to Charlie Watts’s drum set.

What is a Stones show? Musically, now that they’re in their 50th year and a long time before now, it doesn’t seem to be so much about the performances you’re actually hearing in real time. It’s an oldies show that can become a flickering re-enactment ritual: momentarily, you hear a sound that’s both well-worn and alive, with a huge amount of meaning attached to it — it’s almost always a guitar riff or a drum fill — and then it’s gone, pulled under into a more functional or starchier or sometimes sloppier passage.

And visually, it’s about Mick Jagger’s stamina. Saturday was the first American show of the Stones’ “50 and Counting” tour; as long as he was on stage, during the show’s two-and-a-quarter hours, he never stopped. In running shoes and stretchy black clothes, he bounced on his toes with knees slightly bent and swinging independently of each other, like a woman in high heels trying to walk in more than one direction at once.

Obsessively, he kept the crowd engaged, looking at him, feeding back to him — the sign of an expert skill, and also a need. He thanked the audience, semi-formally, a few times. “People always ask us, why do you keep touring?” Mr. Jagger said to the audience at one point. “You’re the reason we really do this.”

This concert improved on the last one I saw in New York, seven years ago, which contained a lot more of what Mr. Richards has called “weaving” — two lead guitars circling around and cutting through each other — but kept falling slack. This one felt careful by comparison, in tune and on point. Mr. Wood often came through unostentatiously as an anchor, playing the right phrase to pull the song together. The rest of the touring band was as it’s been for more than a decade — Darryl Jones on bass, Chuck Leavell on keyboards, Bobby Keys and Tim Reis on saxophones. (For “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” the Choir of Trinity Wall Street sang the introduction.)

It also gained much from two outsiders: Mary J. Blige singing on “Gimme Shelter,” and Gary Clark Jr. playing guitar leads and singing, a little, on a version of Freddy King’s hammering blues “Going Down.” In both cases, the band seemed to inhale the energy of the guests and make them charge harder — especially, demonstrably, Mr. Jagger, who faced Ms. Blige and followed her, inciting her, almost directing her wails. Aside from the full mackerel of “Midnight Rambler,” these were the show’s best parts.

Up close the concert had a sense of purpose. From a distance, perhaps less so. The set list, mostly full of the 1968-78 Stones repertory, contained few surprises, outside of “Going Down.” There were the two negligible new songs from “GRRR!,” the Stones’ 50th anniversary greatest-hits package — “Doom and Gloom” and “One More Shot.” (Obviously, the tour is an opportunity to move product: never will you see such a lavish assortment of tour T-shirts for one band at one concert.) And there was Lennon and McCartney’s “I Wanna Be Your Man,” which the band long ago played in a fast jitter, and has now slowed down and shaped into its familiar mid-tempo formula, with the discrepant cross-chopping of guitars and drums. Formulas are inevitable for 50-year old bands, not that there are many of them to prove the point. The trick, which the Stones figured out long ago, is making them imperfect.

The Rolling Stones will perform at the Prudential Center in Newark Dec. 13 and 15; information at rollingstones.com.

I hope the promoter knows this because he's confirmed it's been cancelled and even made a public statement about it!

He said Mick will be joining the Stones for their US 'tour' - it was a bit disingenuous of him to imply it was for all of the shows, and not just the show (Newark 15/12) that necessitated the Spanish show to be pulled.

Wasn't there some other report, some "insider" who declared MT would be at all US shows? I seem to remember something here and on Shidobee about it.

But the bottom line is Mick's own website has yet to be updated and still shows the 15th as a gig in Spain.

very odd. I still think Taylor will play in Newark (I've never at any time thought Wyman would do the US shows and still dont). Cant really see why the promoter would announce a cancellation if a show was still taking place.

Then again, on the last Stones tour there were plenty of shows which were announced as cancelled by the promoter but where still listed on the band's official website for weeks afterwards and were still being sold through that site (the Euro shows cancelled after Fiji for example and the Honolulu date at the very end of the US tour)

Well, I'll stick with what is posted on Mick's website. They've updated it within the past few days and added 2013 dates but didn't change the 15th. So if his website says the 15th, and you can still buy tickets for the 15th.......

I guess I'll believe it when the news is on the Stones own website.

Maybe the Spanish show is cancelled, maybe they are still selling tickets, who knows.

But I'm done falling for internet rumors. I feel bad for the people who went last night eagerly expecting Mick Taylor.

I'm relieved I waited until it was confirmed for London!  Certainly wouldnt have shelled out for a ticket based on a rumour.

If it makes news on rollingstones.com then it's going to happen. We'll see what they post this week. With Mick and Keith on Letterman, and the PR machine in full swing, we'll know one way or another very very soon.

I think so too. Four days in advance was the time frame for the confirmation of Taylor (and Bill) for the London shows.

Then again, they could keep it as a bonafide surprise for the TV audience.

Looking at the Taylor thing again - the statement from the promoter specifically gives info on how to get a refund. Theyre not going to do that for a show that is still going to take place.

And that thread on shidoobee is mentioning rumours of a Stones club show on the 11th or 12th. Where the hell do people get this stuff from?

Still in shock that Mick T was not there. There had to be palpable disappointment  in the air when Rambler began and Mick T did not appear. Cannot think of any legitimate reason other than ill healh or no invitation. God I feel so sorry for those who were banking on it.

I'm sure all that went were very pleased (except Old KR who gave the show a blistering thumbs down review on Shidoobee) but after the reviews, pics and videos of London, I don't think the US shows can ever compare unless Mick T and/or Bill W are on the stage.

At least they didn't pull the choir from YCAGWYW.

Perfectly happy now waiting for the PPV!!! No more  War horses couldn't drag me away for not breaking my bank to get to one of these shows.

Review from Billboard :

Rolling Stones Give Brooklyn What It Wants

by Jem Aswad, Brooklyn  |   December 09, 2012 3:15 EST

2 Hours/23 Songs/50 Years -- Mick, Keith, Charlie and Ron Fuggedabout Age and Rock Brooklyn for the First Time

...
Kevin Mazur, WireImage

"It's great to be here in Brooklyn, in this great new arena," Mick Jagger said early in the Rolling Stones' first-ever show in the borough Saturday night. "We rode the subway here, I sat next to a guy named Jay Zed," he said, playing tourist by using the British pronunciation of the letter. "I mean -- Jay-Z."

When even Mick Jagger shows some Brooklyn pride, it's hard not to get into the spirit of things. And the Stones were nothing if not spirited on the first of four New York-area performances this month (in addition to two shows at the Prudential Center in Newark next week, they were just added to the 12-12-12 hurricane benefit at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday). But most importantly, even with the four principals ranging in age from 65 to 71, they're a powerful, primal, world-class rock band who are still masters of many disciplines they wrote the book on -- particularly performing in large venues, pleasing a crowd, and just plain rocking.

While crowdmembers ranged in age from upper-single-digits to the bandmembers' generation, the median age was probably somewhere around 45 -- and people were in varying stages of acting it. We saw one more-than-slightly inebriated, provocatively dressed 40-something woman wipe out hard while leaving a ladies' room, erupting into giggles as she splayed on the floor (and this was before the show started); several graying or balding people lit up joints when the lights went down. On the other hand, two friends we saw were accompanied by their dads, and we sat next to a very nice family -- dad plus three teens -- all wearing matching Stones T-shirts, like a living advertisement for the timelessness and multi-generationality of the band's hits.

And make no mistake, even though the set included the two new songs featured on "GRRR!" -- the latest in a seemingly endless line of greatest-hits albums -- this was a hits show. After a self-tribute video featuring Iggy Pop, Martin Scorsese, Elton John, Pete Townshend Johnny Depp, Perry Farrell, Nick Cave, Cate Blanchett (huh?) and others testifying about the Stones' legendary-ness, the band took the stage and charged straight into "Get Off of My Cloud," Mick clad in tight black pants and a sparkly black jacket, guitarists Keith Richards and Ron Wood chugging out the riff side by side. The group then eased into a short showcase of '60s highlights, leading with their second single and first British hit, the Lennon/McCartney-penned "I Wanna Be Your Man" (you know a band's got confidence in its catalog when the second song in the set is a Beatles cover); following with their first American hit, "The Last Time" (Keith messed up the song's signature riff no less than four times -- dude, you WROTE it); then going darker with "Paint It Black," following a groove slower and more laid-back than the familiar version.

The crowd erupted at the opening chords of "Gimme Shelter," but the band willingly let special guest Mary J. Blige steal the song - her soaring high notes were one of the night's many goosebump moments. The evening's other special guest, rising star Gary Clark Jr., joined the band for "Going Down" not long after, and they willingly ceded the spotlight to showcase his formidable blues playing, although Wood and Richards took solos on the song as well. (Let's just take a moment to recognize just what a mark of respect it is for a guitarist to perform onstage with the Rolling Stones: that's Clapton/Beck territory, Gary.)

Gimme Shelter video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=o7LlSzN1Ki0

The best Stones shows have an edge, an element of unpredictability about them, and tonight's edge came in part from some comic uncertainty about the setlist: Jagger introduced the new single "One More Shot" (people began heading for the bathrooms) but the band went into "Miss You" instead (those same people made a mad rush back to their seats); before "Going Down" he said "It's blues time! [he turns around, looks at Keith] … Oh, it's not? … [more conferring] .. It's blues time!"

But despite those minor miscues, the show's pacing was masterful: the new songs were followed by "It's Only Rock N' Roll" and "Honky Tonk Women," then Jagger got a bathroom break when Richards took center stage for "Before They Make Me Run" and "Happy," both of which curiously found him singing with more strength than we've heard him in decades.

The latter end of the show focused overwhelmingly on the band's late '60s/early '70s glory days, and the evening's musical highlights were the darker, more primal songs from that era: "Gimme Shelter," "Sympathy for the Devil" (which closed the main set), and especially "Midnight Rambler," which found Jagger blowing some fierce harmonica and, during the song's chugging middle instrumental section, found him, the two guitarists and bassist Darryl Jones hunched together in front of Charlie Watts' drumkit, pumping out the pulsing rhythm like it was 1972 instead of 2012.

Start Me Up video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=s6ZYR2Atfrk

"People ask us why we're still doing this," Jagger said to the audience late in the show. "It's for you." While the cost of the tickets (floor seats exceeded $800; obstructed views $150, including service charges) and the merch (cheapest t-shirt: $40) makes that statement feel maybe a little ingenuous, the Stones still give a crowd its money's worth. Sure, there are several supporting musicians - two keyboardists, two singers, two horns - but the core four still do the bulk of the work, and while Jagger isn't running the onstage triathalons he was 30 years ago, he's a physical marvel who had the crowd in the palm of his hand from the jump. He's got the energy and physique of a man at least 20 years younger - and, especially when he's doing that undulating-letter-X dance he's been working since the '60s, there's never any question who you're watching. (Besides, how many 69-year-old men can shake their asses and not look preposterous?)

Yet for all of Mick and Keith's supremacy, there's no question that the heart of this band is and will always be Watts: At 71, his whipcrack snare and preternatural sense of swing drive the songs with peerless authority, and define the contradictory uptight-laid-back-ness that's at the heart of the Stones' rhythm.

For the encore, the band was joined by the Trinity Wall Street Choir (who scored a Grammy nomination earlier this week) for "You Can't Always Get What You Want," which got a refreshing charge toward the end when Watts briefly shifted into a double-time gospel-style rave-up before downshifting.

Ignore the Video Title, This is 'You Can't Always Get...'   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRIeXLno2SI&feature=player_embedded

And the show ended, predictably, with a double shot of "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and "Satisfaction" that found Jagger, Richards and Wood taking one last turn around the circular walkway that reached into the crowd before saying goodnight at a very civilized 11:10 p.m. - and any hope of a backstage bacchanal was quickly quashed as the crowd was politely but firmly shooed out of and away from the Barclay's Center by venue staff and, outside, a blaring announcement from a police car.

Not that most people seemed to mind: It had been an enormously satisfying two hours in the hands of masters, and babysitters, bedtime and deadlines beckoned. And for all the controversy around the borough's new billion-dollar arena, this writer was one of many Brooklynites who crossed Flatbush Avenue after the Rolling Stones concert that just took place in our neighborhood and walked home, even though it was raining -- because we could.

I think they should hunt down that Spanish promoter & bring him to the US to explain his actions from the stage, during one of the next two shows.

Is it the feeling here that a concert given by The Stones will never be good again without a guitarist who left the band 38 years ago playing one song?

Wasn't there a video of fans talking too, or was that interspersed with the celebrities, before the London show?
I rather thought there'd be US fans shown who were interviewed but I guess that didn't pan out.

Well...the show was very good and Barclays is a pretty cool arena. Massive disappointment in the house over the absence of Mick T. I'm so very glad now that I went to the London shows. This one would rank #3 of the 3 so far.

Just back home from New York.

Scattered thoughts: the show started off somewhat rockily, but cohered nicely. Crowd energy surged during the final third of the show. Much as I would like to hear non-warhorses, they're the ones that work. Alas. Still, if they do tour more extensively next year, I really do hope they crack the catalog some more. Just two or three rarities would make a *huge* difference. Something especially memorable for us psychotics.

Mick is an absolute physical marvel. It's stunning what he's able to do onstage at his age, and it shouldn't be taken for granted. Best Ronnie I've seen since '94. The solos and fills are thoughtful and tasty, and he's locked in with Keith on rhythm. The two of them know they're driving the sound completely on these gigs, and they've really stepped up their game.

I sat on the lower-level on Keith's side, and it seems to me playing has become a heavy lift for him. Joyful, but burdensome. It's almost like he's afraid of breaking something when he moves around. He and Ronnie do this thing on "Sympathy" where they hide behind the drum riser until the first chorus. Keith leaned on it with an outstretched arm as he waited to hit his mark, and for the first time he looked to me like an ordinary oldish man at rest. Shook me up in a weird way. He interacts a lot with Darryl, which I'd never noticed before. I think he looks to him for cues, or at least a general sense of "How we doing here?" All that said, he's actually playing really solidly. His powers are diminished — but he's making the most of what's left.

I'm going to Newark Night 2, and really looking forward to it.

Collectively I'm treasuring these five shows in a way that I didn't expect I would.

Mel, you just caused me to be late for work as I now have to reapply my mascara.

Time truly doesn't wait for anyone, even Keith Richards. At some point, we have to say "Farewell my love".  Happy to hear he's giving it all he's got.

SW, I appreciate your enthusiasm and your devotion to Keith.
You are how old?? Early 30's??
When you hit 50 you'll understand.

Keith does NOT withstand it all. That, my friend is a myth.
I hate those damn pics of "Keith Richards outlived the Twinkie" "Keith Richards outlived Michael Jackson" "Keith Richards outlived Whitney Houston".
I hate them because the man is mortal, despite whatever myths we have embedded in our hearts.

Long may he live and long may he deliver the riffs.
Just realize that nothing lasts forever.

I'm in my late 30's but I'll take early 30's!

I just saw 87 year old BB King in Atlantic City. When he touches that guitar it's pure magic. For me, Keith is the same. Hearing him hit an open G riff is life affirming. Also, I play guitar. In my eyes, the older a musician becomes, the more economical they become. Less flash and more focus on the instrument. I've heard from musicians who look at Keith and say he's on the money. His fretboard work is all about focus and intensity, and he's playing better than he has in years and years.

Both Ronnie and Keith have cut way back on the goofing and mugging. It's all to the good.

Funny moment at Barclays: he flubbed the intro to "The Last Time" — twice! — and smiled as if to say, "F*ck, there I go again!"

Here's my review, I saw three different shows in one show....Part A

1.      Get off my cloud
2.      I wanna be your man
3.      The last time
4.      Paint it black
5.      Gimme shelter (with Mary J. Blige)
6.      Wild horses
7.      Going down (with Gary Clark Jr.)
8.      All down the line

This part of the show in my opinion kicked ass, the crowd was rockin throughout these 8 songs, even a quite rocking during Wild Horses. I was literally in the last row of section 210 and hardly anyone was sitting down. People came out to rock and the first 8 songs provided a nice mix. I Want To Be Your Man and Last Time had some special old time magic, both sounded great.
Paint It Black and GS both had a NY kind of edge to it. If you weren't sweating from dancing by now, you were missing something.

Wild Horses was a nice way to catch your breath and admire the nice playing by The Stones. Then the intensity went back up with Going Down and ADTL. Again, our section was non stop rocking, must've been the weed, hash, coke , LSD and mushrooms going around our section. We saw it all and were asked to par-take in all the above. The party was in the last row.  Doo'h

Part B

9.      Miss you
10.      One more shot
11.      Doom & Gloom
12.      It’s only rock and roll
13.      Honky tonk woman
14.      Before they make me run
15.      Happy

This was a transitional period, Miss You started out a little slow, but seemed to pick up strength...OMS and D&G seemed to take a little energy out of the show, people were starting to sit down and the energy was a little low.

IORR got the people back up to dance again, the energy level was back to the first part of the show. HTW, was nice. Everybody singing and dancing, lots of smiles on peoples faces.

The two Keith songs were good,, but BTMMR, was a little lackluster...Happy got things back on track again.

NOW the MOMENT everyone was waiting for.......Midnight Rambler

16.      Midnight Rambler (wo/Mick Taylor)
17.      Start me up
18.      Tumbling dice
19.      Brown sugar
20.      Sympathy for the devil

Well MR started and they was a collective vibe going around the arena...Where's Mick Taylor? I shrugged it off and thought, "cool, he'll come out later and do a different song." I have to say it almost looked and sounded like they had to get their street cred back by ripping into MR, which Keith and Ronnie did. The strong guitars ripped the song from beginning to end.

SMU, was SMU, it is what it is. When Tumbling Dice was played I thought, "OK maybe Taylor will come out and join them and lay down some tasty leads" The guitars were a little muddied during TD, not as clean and crisp as Rambler.

Brown Sugar was played like a warhorse, no special feeling, just accentuating the the Yeah, yeah, yeah, woo!   over and over.

SFTD, keith laid down some nice leads, but nothing jaw dropping, it was a strong number...BUT, the energy was down, and I have a feeling it was people wondering "Where the fck is Mick Taylor?"  We heard he cancelled his tour in Spain and he would be here, everyone was talking about it before the show...where is he?

The Finale....

ENCORE
21.      You can’t always get what you want (with local chorus)
22.      Jumping jack flash
23.      Satisfaction

By now, even us who were hopeful that maybe Mick Taylor would join for the encore, knew it wasn't going to happen.

YCAGWYW was very very sweet, nicely done and people around me had tears in their eyes. A very touching song done wonderfully.

JJF and Satifaction sounded like the tired warhorses they are. The energy was next to none in the section I was in...it felt like..."Not this shit again" Say what you want they they must do the warhorses, I feel like the energy is much higher for songs that people know but are not warhorses.

I give this show a solid 7, it could've been a 10 by throwing out three of the warhorse and an 11 if Mick Taylor showed up.

It's a tough riff, especially without ANY reverb on it.  It did sound like he was teasing it.  Glad to see Keef so focused on playing and even at 69 years old, refusing to rest on his laurels.  It really is moving to see him bust his ass out there.  God bless him.  Guy is my fuckin' hero.  I know "work ethic" isn't something that leaps to mind when we hear the name Keith Richards, he always has seemed as more of a beautifully intoxicated antenna when it came to writing and playing.  But to me, this looks like the Keith that kept a journal of notes after every show in the early days in London.  Love the man. Are you fucking serious?

Richards may well have been teasing. I think the two "aborts" sound cool as hell.
And the song's really jumping these days - much better than the No Security version (Charlie's really popping it and the vocal sounds great).

It was a screw-up. The smile on his face was the "tell." Also Mick's head-tilts: "Nope, try again. Nope, try again, again." Then turning around -- "everything all right back there?!"
