I was at the concert. There were some amazing moments, and I hope they raised a LOT of money because it is sorely needed. I spend the day in Red Hook before going to the show, and it is sill reeling from the hurricane. When I delivered supplies to New Dorp, Staten Island about a month ago I could not believe the complete devastation for miles around us.
My over-riding impression of the show was that it was way too long. The organizers needed to be more forceful in handling the rock gods. They let too many acts play too many songs.
The highlights for me:
For me, Roger Waters and Eddie Vedder stole the show. They were impeccable. I thought our boys were very good (I wish that every band had a two to four song limit). They were pretty much the only act that had a project get promoted live on the show. This should help the PPV sales. Appetites have been whetted.
Bruce was great, of course, and The Who rocked the place. I had just seen them last week at MSG, and I loved the way they were weaving Moonie and Ox into the live performance. Not sure if the Moonie part could be truly appreciated by the TV audience last night. Note to Roger: keep your fucking shirt buttoned.
Lows: Buschemi blathering....other celebs blathering...Kristen Stewart....Blake Lively...even Colbert and Jon Stweart both talked too long. Kanye running around in a dress to a recorded soundtrack. Bon Jovi...everything he did. Clapton and Chris Martin should have both joined some other act rather than take up time with individual performances.
I have to admit, I left during Macca. It was already after 1:00 AM and I have two REAL Stones shows this week!
WTF were they thinking....putting together a Nirvana reunion that wouldn't start till 1:15 in the morning?
Obviously there were no clocks backstage.
