Direct from the new Rolling Stones i-phone app :

"Stones fans will be delighted to hear that Stones legends Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor are confirmed as special guests for these London shows. This will be the first time they have performed with the band for over 20 years".

Also in the announcement :

The band will "hit the stage at 8 pm (note the revised start time) with a set list packed with hits, classics and one or two surprises.

There is NO SUPPORT ACT for these concerts. The Stones will perform for over two hours and they want to deliver a stunning show to celebrate five decades treading the boards. "

This is fantastic news. And I promise to get pics.  Smiley

I woke up this morning to an email from my ticket agency that started,
"Dear Guest,
Due to circumstances beyond our control the Rolling Stones have announced that they are bringing their concert time forward by 45 minutes on Sunday 25th November. The concert will now start at 8pm."

I almost had a heart attack just reading the "due to circumstances beyond our control the Rolling Stones have announced....."

Negligible in Taylor's case. He has a show in Avila, Spain on Dec 15th - he only rearranged it two weeks ago as it was meant to take place this week.

Wyman?  Doubtful for obvious reasons.

Neither of them have even rehearsed with the Stones until now, so there's no chance they'll be playing for the whole show.

Bill is now 75.

Any truth that the start time was moved up to accommodate Wyman's bed time?

Patience is a virtue - as well as the smaller matter of confirmation of all the surviving band members being present.

Got a pair of tickets for Sunday on Level 1 for £300 below face value on e-bay.

Still not exactly a cheap night out but glad that I didnt pay anywhere near what the Stones were asking..

Now - does anyone want my spare ticket?

I know man.  Just saying that in a perfect world it would be cool, a world in which the calendar still read 1972.  I actually fear the results in 2012 after all this time of not playing together.  I worry that the magic just won't be there and that it will sound forced/contrived and we'll walk away bummed out.

Let's keep fingers crossed for a positive experience and a good bunch of shows with MOST of the men on this planet that have been Rolling Stones. (RIP Brian and Ian)

Cheers. I really did have no intention at all of going until lunchtime today - luckily I'd booked a hotel at a very good price before the dates were public knowledge and hadn't cancelled it yet as I was hoping someone else could use it, so its worked out pretty well. The Taylor/Wyman thing swung my interest and not paying more than I was originally willing to pay on e-bay clinched it.

Spare ticket will be somewhat below face value too in case anyone's interested. Block 108.

I dont know. Whilst it was me who suggested the Pilot Inn last time and then phoned them a week or so in advance to advise them to have enough staff on, I've been totally out of the loop this time as I wasn't intending to go.

I'm due to arrive at Gatwick at 12.40 so I'd probably be at the Pilot Inn around 3. Your fellow Aussie, the legendary Rockman, is getting my spare ticket. So we'll see ya there.

So...now the speculation as to the extent of Bill and MT's involvement w/ the shows...

One or two songs each...
Various throughout the show...
For the encore and curtain call...

I think they will bring out MT for CYHMK and Waiting on a Friend

Bill is a tough one...maybe Miss You and If You Can't Rock Me or Shattered

The thought of EVERYONE on stage for Satisfaction is a possibility...

There are various other songs i would prefer to here but i am going by what they have rehearsed....FINGERPRINT FILE would be amazing to have Bill & MT play on...

I'm worried about that too, especially nowadays where ticketmaster can just e-mail you a ticket with a barcode. What's to stop someone from printing out dozens of copies?

I think as Gazza said earlier...NYC is unlikely due to prior commitments...BUT...let's hope that this will carry on with the "real"tour in 2013

Taylor would obviously not be a band member...but an employee...i can only hope that the RS machine will be fair and possibly make a bit
of a gesture  and not just  pay him scale...

And if it's not Taylor and/or Wyman in Newark/Brooklyn, it had better be someone (or two) equally special -- especially since 12/15 is pay-per-view.

I think you're right and it's not like the Stones can't easily arrange for that to happen, but the stuff about a coffee shop is a low blow.

THE STONES WHO ROLLED AWAY

...
The Rolling Stones at their free concert in Hyde Park in 1969

Friday November 23,2012
By Jane Warren

THE STONES are a different kind of group, ex-Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor observed recently – with a prize degree of understatement. “I realised that when I joined them,” he says. “It’s not really so much their musical ability it’s just they have a certain kind of style and attitude which is unique.”
With heroin having made life with the band less fun Taylor, 63, quit in 1974 after five years and ex-Faces guitarist Ronnie Wood took over but on Sunday for the first time in 37 years he will once again appear live on stage with The Rolling Stones on the much-anticipated Doom and Gloom world tour. And not only Taylor, whom many aficionados see as the most musically talented member of the group: bassist Bill Wyman, 76, who left in December 1992 (having joined in 1962, the year after the Stones formed), will also be making a guest appearance.
Keith Richards has made it crystal clear that “guest” is very much the watchword. Indeed it was the controlling influence of Richards and outrageous showman Sir Mick Jagger that was one reason Wyman decided to quit two decades ago. The Rolling Stones have always belonged to Jagger and Richards, something the other long-stayers (second guitarist Wood and slate-faced drummer Charlie Watts, who joined in 1963) have always accepted. But then Jagger, 69, and Richards, 68, are the only remaining original members.
Part of that excitement is wondering if one is going to thump the other
David Roberts, editor of Rock Chronicles
A Rolling Stones tour is always an event. Their sell-out stadium gigs raised the bar for every other band in the world and they have always been defined by their live identity. But this, their 41st tour and the highlight of their 50th anniversary year, could be one of their most sensational ever.
David Roberts, editor of Rock Chronicles, a lavish rock history to be published next month (Cassell Illustrated, £25) says: “Their enduring quality is mainly down to the excitement they generate on stage. There is a tension-filled chemistry between Mick and Keith that excites people to the point where you are never sure what is going to happen next.
“Part of that excitement is wondering if one is going to thump the other.”

The chance to see the Stones reunited is such a must-see that tickets are being exchanged for up to £1,000. Throughout much of their career and especially post-1980 the Stones’ success has been based more on sales of tickets than of albums.
“The reason people go is not just to hear the music, it’s to see The Rolling Stones,” says James Medd, rock journalist and music critic, who will be in the audience on Sunday night at London’s O2. “Bill Wyman as a bassist may be hugely underrated but the big thrill here is guitarist Mick Taylor, who had a pivotal role on what are considered the Stones’ greatest albums.
“The Rolling Stones were never really as good after he left.”
The reason, says Medd, is the way Taylor and Keith Richards switched between lead and rhythm on a single song: Taylor’s fluid, silvery lead guitar spurring on Richards’ long, hypnotic grooves. “It’s a meld. It’s not usual and it is definitely one of the band’s secrets.”
Wyman also has allure beyond his historical involvement. “He may be only a decent bassist – even the band say Darryl Jones, the bassist they’ve got now, is better – but the point with Wyman is that he was actually there from the early days and is part of such iconic tracks as Gimme Shelter, Brown Sugar, Wild Horses and It’s Only Rock 'n’ Roll,” adds Medd.
So why did Wyman and Taylor leave the band and what has happened to them since?
“The fact is that none of them have ever been any good away from the group,” says David Roberts, and that includes Sir Mick, who made several disappointing solo albums. “It’s only when they are together as the Stones that they are at the height of their powers.”
Being adored as part of a supergroup may come naturally to Jagger and Richards, both of whom enjoy playing up to their image, but not for Taylor and Wyman.
“Neither of them were cut out to be a Stone,” says David Roberts. “Taylor didn’t see eye to eye with Richards and secondly he didn’t feel comfortable being part of the greatest rock and roll touring band in the world. He was a bit more introverted. He’s a wonderful blues guitarist but he was not made to be a Rolling Stone in the way Ronnie Wood is. Wood is a celebrity figure, although of course he is still only allowed by Richards and Jagger’s strict hierarchy to be a celebrity figure to a point.”
Mick Taylor, who still tours in a blues band from time to time, says he left the Stones following a dispute over song-writing credits. Medd believes it is fair to state that being a Rolling Stone ruined Taylor’s life.
“He left in part because he was heading for an early death,” claims Medd of Taylor who in time suffered from full-blown heroin addiction. He now lives in a two-bedroom semi in Suffolk, a stark contrast to Mick Jagger’s estimated £200million fortune. “Twenty years on, while The Rolling Stones were playing Wembley Stadium, Taylor was playing blues clubs but perhaps that suited his more introverted nature,” says Medd.
“To survive in The Rolling Stones you have to be one of the boys, as well as a great artist. Or you need to be as ‘Teflon’ as Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts, who were both able to ignore the constant and exhausting tension that comes from being in such a famous band.”
But Taylor insists he is content. “I’m very happy, very relaxed and I’m healthy compared to how I have been,” he said this summer.
As for Bill Wyman, he was older than the other band members, married and had a young son (of whom he was later awarded sole custody). “He was there during the best recording times of the band but eventually they felt he wasn’t quite what they needed,” says Roberts.
“He’s such an anonymous figure. It is difficult to know whether he was pushed or whether he wanted to leave but no one was surprised when he did.”
Wyman certainly had a healthy disinterest in the pharmacological excesses that led other band members to behave like bad boys (although Jagger and Charlie Watts also largely resisted).
Wyman’s weakness was women. Since leaving the band he has done very nicely in a number of alternative arenas. He has written meticulously researched history books, owns a restaurant (Sticky Fingers) and is passionate about interests such as metal detecting, photography and cricket. He has also made a success of his eponymous band Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings, with whom he still tours on a modest but successful scale twice a year.
“The years since I left the band have been the best of my life,” says Wyman. “I should have been a museum curator or a librarian because I like that better than being a ‘rock star’. Kids think of the glitz and forget all the hanging around.
“Do you know what the biggest problem is for most musicians on tour? Getting your laundry done.”

Ronnie, in his interview on The One Show this evening more or less confirmed Jeff Beck as a guest in London as well - mentioning about having "Bill Wyman on one song, Jeff Beck on another song" etc.

Little Red Rooster is my guess for Beck. Bill Wyman only one? Lame.

I have only said it once but I need to get it out: YOU LUCKY BASTARDS.

Wyman will play on more than one. Remember Keith on the ropeline (in London or New York, I can't remember which) saying Bill and Darryl will divide up the setlist?

Keith isn't exzactly the go to guy for accurate info. Roll Eyes

research is off, but its not that spiteful really. For a change.

Wyman certainly doesnt play on IORR either, as you know. Mick and Keith were the only members of the 1974 version of the Stones who did.

She's a far better singer and performer than Lisa Fischer for starters.

Why should a guest list be limited to geriatric white males?

So Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton were rumoured to be joining for the PPV show - could it be inferred that Eric will be joining the Stones for the Thursday show? To see that would be my dream come true... Anyone know what Eric's up to for the next week?

Good thing Buddy Guy is one of the guests at the US - at least that's how it's looking so far.

Mary J. Blige isn't on my radar and neither is Jeff Beck.

Lisa is off with Chris Botti's band thankfully.

Darryl shouldn't even be at these shows...Let Bill play all the numbers. He's the real Stones bassist, always was and always will be.
Same for Taylor, really. Or if anything just have Taylor play on all pre 1975 numbers and Ronnie play on all post '75 numbers. Or maybe throw Taylor in for some soloing on the later songs. He'd do a great job as he did back in the '70s.

I agree with you about old white males, but I don't agree that Mary J. Blige is a better singer or performer than Lisa Fischer. Her music is unbearable to listen to and just because she is more famous, I don't see why she is the better performer. I don't think that is what you meant but on Gimme Shelter, I've always thought Lisa Fischer holds up very well. I have only admittedly seen Blige in small snippets but nothing I saw showed her to be more dynamic or effective on stage. It really disappointed me when I saw she is joining them. Better than Timbershite and Aguilera, but very upsetting.

Bill quit and he's happy with his choice but he left the band and the few numbers he plays suit everyone well. Darryl has been a solid bassist and loyal. He deserves the role to enjoy this special show. Same thing with Lisa Fischer.

Quit or not Bill was with the band for 21 years and played on 20 albums and all of their biggest hits feature his signature touch and his bass sound...Darryl's been an employee--not even an actual band member--since '94 and has only played on three albums and some singles, and on said albums he sometimes isn't even the sole bassist, sharing that duty with session people. Bill was a Stone and deserves a bit higher status than a hireling at what will probably be the band's last shows/possible tour.

in my opinion, more weight needs to be given to live appearances than his contribution to studio tracks - that's where we see the band in action right? anyone who has followed the Stones' live/touring career will treat the 'extra members' - chuck, darryl, the singers, (not forgetting bobby keys) etc as inherent in the band's stage persona - and it has been this way for a long time. to give darryl the boot for these "landmark shows" after his 19 or so years with the band would be soooooooo disrespectful

I'd like to see Bill play more, but dumping Daryl would be like firing an employee to make room for an old one who already dumped you.

I wasnt talking about the quality of her music. Its ok, I wouldnt necessarily call myself a fan.  I think she's a better singer. And unquestionably a better performer. And it does no harm to shake up the backing musicians on occasion. Its been pretty stagnant now since 1989.

Not a slight on Lisa by any means - but I think this is pretty dynamic...

Thats just daft and pretty much unworkable considering the existing band have been rehearsing for most of the last 7 weeks.

And its fanciful to imagine that any of these people - including Taylor - can perform to the level that they were capable of in their 20's.

We disagree on the singer and performer bit and that Grammy's clip was one of the ones I had seen. I don't see anything dynamic there just a lot of stomping and wailing. Someone may be technically excellent but I look for something more in singers. It's their phrasing, how they bend notes, how they pronounce words, and so on. People like Mary J. Blige fall into the same Mariah Carey, Aguilera, and even Bono (not the style of music but his reputation for his voice). I know people will be shocked to hear Carey in the same group but she's the same crap for me and same with Aguilera. It just bores me to bits to hear them sing. Mick may not be technically amazing but he is one of the world's greatest vocalists for what he does with his voice. But they've surprised me before and may do so again. Singing great songs does tend to be different in hearing the true quality of one's voice. The Fergie Gimme Shelter with U2 was unbearable. I'm not against new because I think Doom and Gloom is the best thing they've released since Tattoo You and I mean the single edit, but I'll take Lisa any day. The greatness of the Stones apart from the songs is how they take risks sometimes with new sounds but this is just crap for me.

Not only is upsetting too much, but the "very" was amusing to read again. Let's just say disappointing.

As witnessed in "Shine A Light",  the second you bring someone into the fold that knows NOTHING of what the Rolling Stones do, have done, or will do (that means you Christina Aguleria), it's an absolute mess.  She was MISERABLE in that film and was only there to be eye candy.

I just want to see the band - past and present - and want to hear all the great songs they have made together over the years.  I don't have a desire for special guests that were never in the band.

They don't. They've had Sheryl Crow guest on numerous occasions. Not forgetting Aguilera either.

I would say its pretty likely they'll play Gimme Shelter with it as to the best of my knowledge Lisa won't be present.

Buddy Guy was on fire in Shine a Light. He is on the recent Checkerboard Lounge set (which nobody bought) and is the leading suspect for guest spotting in the US. His schedule is wide open in December, and it give him some exposure for his upcoming tour:

http://www.buddyguy.com/

Lisa has another job. Lisa is a vocalist with this dude, and has been for some time:

http://www.chrisbotti.com/us/events

Since she hasn't been a part of any of the rehearsals, it looks like she's out for these shows. Which is fine with me - I want a stripped down band relying on the guitar line.  Thanks to Charlie Watts for granting my wish!

My good friend Fred Hardin just posted the following on Shidoobee and to me privately via email:

"Mick Taylor is scheduled to perform all three of the remaining shows.
Great News for the Stateside show goers!"

Fred has a rock solid source within Taylor's camp!

My thoughts on Bill are well documented on here (I'm not a huge fan, and I call BS on the sudden newfound fandom he received since the 50th came around) but I say he needs to get his ass on a plane and do the shows. It's not like he's tied up these days.

That's fine. I don't want to highjack the thread, but show me one website, a messageboard thread, articles, etc. that pine for Bill Wyman. His leaving didn't effect record sales, ticket sales, or anything since he left. Nobody is raving about Bill's appearance the way they are for Taylor's - and Bill is one of the original members. When Voodoo Lounge, Bridges, and Bigger Bang were released nobody said "I wish Bill was on this album." People don't turn down the chance to see the Stones because of Bill not being in the band. Look at the view counts for dedicated Bill threads over the years. People really don't care outside of die hards.

With that said, the US fans and the world wide pay per view customers deserve to see Bill. He's not doing anything that he can't cancel or postpone. He's a musician and he needs to play at all the gigs.

Brian jones death, Taylor joining leaving, ronnie joining, Wyman leaving... none of these ruined the sales, very true... but I listen to the music, live shows and studio albums. I really hear a huge difference from Bill, especially when the band rebounded in the late 70's... His playing on some Girls is awesome, and that record wouldn't be the same without him. I don't listen to music and decide how much I like it, based on how much it sold or I hope it sells... same with a concert...  People don't care about anyone in the band outside of Jagger more the most part if you take those who follow pop culture and entertainment news... These same folks don't get hard ons and dance around the house listening to Midnight Rambler... I'm just sayin'!!!

Beautifully said. I love Darryl but Wyman is in the DNA of the band and these guys. The band's sound was different with him in it and he was, as Don Was said, underrated genius. I don't care about how much things sell but if they really wanted to sell stuff they would put him on a ship, get Mick Taylor on board, and then people would see ticket sales go through the roof.

He is part of the DNA and to see him back onboard is most satisfying but increasing the take of treasure by our favorite privateers couldnt be much larger with his or MTs precense at any port of call...........

Maybe not through the roof, but I'm sure they will improve. By how much, I think is hard to tell because the shows will be better and there will be a bigger buzz around the shows and the tour.

I guess my point wasn't made clearly enough. Nobody was missing Bill until this year. Nobody missed him on records at all. He needs to show up at all the US shows. If he can fly to the US and do an east coast book tour and fan greet for his books that don't sell, then he can show up and do the shows.

I'm not bashing Bill at all. I am calling for him to do the US shows.

I am suspect of the sudden interest in Bill that I see all over the internet outside of Rocks Off/Shidoobee/IORR. Nobody seemed to really care about him for years and years. Even on Rocks Off - look at the amount of threads started for Bill, Bill related projects, tours (the one about his tour with the Supremes member didn't even get a response) - and birthday threads for him that don't exist.

Seeing Mick Taylor in 2012 playing Midnight Rambler makes me very, very sad.  And Keith looked absolutely pissed that Taylor took over the stage from KEITH'S band.

It's not how it was supposed to be, not in my mind anyway.

The Rolling Stones of 2012, however, sounded pretty damn good.

Keith was not pissed. Both he and Ronnie hung by the drum riser in order to give MT the spotlight. That was the whole point of the invitation.

Right. Keith seemed fine and more focused than he has been in a while on playing. Taylor was enjoying his moment and deserved it.
