Darryl shouldn't even be at these shows...Let Bill play all the numbers. He's the real Stones bassist, always was and always will be.
Same for Taylor, really. Or if anything just have Taylor play on all pre 1975 numbers and Ronnie play on all post '75 numbers. Or maybe throw Taylor in for some soloing on the later songs. He'd do a great job as he did back in the '70s.

Bill quit and he's happy with his choice but he left the band and the few numbers he plays suit everyone well. Darryl has been a solid bassist and loyal. He deserves the role to enjoy this special show. Same thing with Lisa Fischer.

Quit or not Bill was with the band for 21 years and played on 20 albums and all of their biggest hits feature his signature touch and his bass sound...Darryl's been an employee--not even an actual band member--since '94 and has only played on three albums and some singles, and on said albums he sometimes isn't even the sole bassist, sharing that duty with session people. Bill was a Stone and deserves a bit higher status than a hireling at what will probably be the band's last shows/possible tour.

in my opinion, more weight needs to be given to live appearances than his contribution to studio tracks - that's where we see the band in action right? anyone who has followed the Stones' live/touring career will treat the 'extra members' - chuck, darryl, the singers, (not forgetting bobby keys) etc as inherent in the band's stage persona - and it has been this way for a long time. to give darryl the boot for these "landmark shows" after his 19 or so years with the band would be soooooooo disrespectful

I'd like to see Bill play more, but dumping Daryl would be like firing an employee to make room for an old one who already dumped you.

Why should a guest list be limited to geriatric white males?

I agree with you about old white males, but I don't agree that Mary J. Blige is a better singer or performer than Lisa Fischer. Her music is unbearable to listen to and just because she is more famous, I don't see why she is the better performer. I don't think that is what you meant but on Gimme Shelter, I've always thought Lisa Fischer holds up very well. I have only admittedly seen Blige in small snippets but nothing I saw showed her to be more dynamic or effective on stage. It really disappointed me when I saw she is joining them. Better than Timbershite and Aguilera, but very upsetting.

I wasnt talking about the quality of her music. Its ok, I wouldnt necessarily call myself a fan.  I think she's a better singer. And unquestionably a better performer. And it does no harm to shake up the backing musicians on occasion. Its been pretty stagnant now since 1989.

Not a slight on Lisa by any means - but I think this is pretty dynamic...

Thats just daft and pretty much unworkable considering the existing band have been rehearsing for most of the last 7 weeks.

And its fanciful to imagine that any of these people - including Taylor - can perform to the level that they were capable of in their 20's.

We disagree on the singer and performer bit and that Grammy's clip was one of the ones I had seen. I don't see anything dynamic there just a lot of stomping and wailing. Someone may be technically excellent but I look for something more in singers. It's their phrasing, how they bend notes, how they pronounce words, and so on. People like Mary J. Blige fall into the same Mariah Carey, Aguilera, and even Bono (not the style of music but his reputation for his voice). I know people will be shocked to hear Carey in the same group but she's the same crap for me and same with Aguilera. It just bores me to bits to hear them sing. Mick may not be technically amazing but he is one of the world's greatest vocalists for what he does with his voice. But they've surprised me before and may do so again. Singing great songs does tend to be different in hearing the true quality of one's voice. The Fergie Gimme Shelter with U2 was unbearable. I'm not against new because I think Doom and Gloom is the best thing they've released since Tattoo You and I mean the single edit, but I'll take Lisa any day. The greatness of the Stones apart from the songs is how they take risks sometimes with new sounds but this is just crap for me.

Not only is upsetting too much, but the "very" was amusing to read again. Let's just say disappointing.

But why do they seem obligated to have a black female singer? Are they going to do Gimmie Shelter? If so great. If not,it's just a waste of time.

As witnessed in "Shine A Light",  the second you bring someone into the fold that knows NOTHING of what the Rolling Stones do, have done, or will do (that means you Christina Aguleria), it's an absolute mess.  She was MISERABLE in that film and was only there to be eye candy.

I just want to see the band - past and present - and want to hear all the great songs they have made together over the years.  I don't have a desire for special guests that were never in the band.

Agree, I dont need or want any special guests, they ruin the songs. Dave Matthews is another example.

They don't. They've had Sheryl Crow guest on numerous occasions. Not forgetting Aguilera either.

I would say its pretty likely they'll play Gimme Shelter with it as to the best of my knowledge Lisa won't be present.

Buddy Guy was on fire in Shine a Light. He is on the recent Checkerboard Lounge set (which nobody bought) and is the leading suspect for guest spotting in the US. His schedule is wide open in December, and it give him some exposure for his upcoming tour:

http://www.buddyguy.com/

Lisa has another job. Lisa is a vocalist with this dude, and has been for some time:

http://www.chrisbotti.com/us/events

Since she hasn't been a part of any of the rehearsals, it looks like she's out for these shows. Which is fine with me - I want a stripped down band relying on the guitar line.  Thanks to Charlie Watts for granting my wish!

My thoughts on Bill are well documented on here (I'm not a huge fan, and I call BS on the sudden newfound fandom he received since the 50th came around) but I say he needs to get his ass on a plane and do the shows. It's not like he's tied up these days.

That's fine. I don't want to highjack the thread, but show me one website, a messageboard thread, articles, etc. that pine for Bill Wyman. His leaving didn't effect record sales, ticket sales, or anything since he left. Nobody is raving about Bill's appearance the way they are for Taylor's - and Bill is one of the original members. When Voodoo Lounge, Bridges, and Bigger Bang were released nobody said "I wish Bill was on this album." People don't turn down the chance to see the Stones because of Bill not being in the band. Look at the view counts for dedicated Bill threads over the years. People really don't care outside of die hards.

With that said, the US fans and the world wide pay per view customers deserve to see Bill. He's not doing anything that he can't cancel or postpone. He's a musician and he needs to play at all the gigs.

Look at the view counts for dedicated Bill threads over the years. People really don't care outside of die hards.

With that said, the US fans and the world wide pay per view customers deserve to see Bill. He's not doing anything that he can't cancel or postpone. He's a musician and he needs to play at all the gigs.

Brian jones death, Taylor joining leaving, ronnie joining, Wyman leaving... none of these ruined the sales, very true... but I listen to the music, live shows and studio albums. I really hear a huge difference from Bill, especially when the band rebounded in the late 70's... His playing on some Girls is awesome, and that record wouldn't be the same without him. I don't listen to music and decide how much I like it, based on how much it sold or I hope it sells... same with a concert...  People don't care about anyone in the band outside of Jagger more the most part if you take those who follow pop culture and entertainment news... These same folks don't get hard ons and dance around the house listening to Midnight Rambler... I'm just sayin'!!!

Beautifully said. I love Darryl but Wyman is in the DNA of the band and these guys. The band's sound was different with him in it and he was, as Don Was said, underrated genius. I don't care about how much things sell but if they really wanted to sell stuff they would put him on a ship, get Mick Taylor on board, and then people would see ticket sales go through the roof.
