Gazza wrote on Oct 25 th, 2012 at 2:13pm: Came home tonight to find an e-mail in my inbox from a German Stones fan - and someone I dont really know but who has mailed me in the past - saying he had got two tickets for tonight's show and was offering me his spare one for face value. if I mailed him as soon as possible with my real name for authorisation.
Had I seen it and responded, I could have grabbed a flight and got there early this afternoon.
AAAAAAAARGHHHHH!
Sebi, you are a prince among men and I hope you have the best night of your life. A fantastic gesture by a REAL fan. Just as an update to this, Sebi sent me his review of the show (I had to edit some bits out, the reason should hopefully be apparent in the near future)- I hope he doesnt mind me posting it : Got home Last Night from this Amazing Trip to Paris. Had to sleep the Whole Day to recover. That's why i'm not writing back until now.
Where should I start?? As you know there were these rumors about a secret gig in Paris, and I thought that thursday would make the most sense as i could not imagine, that they will play this corporate gig ( for they charge about 7million $ I think) without a warm up show. My luck was that I have holidays at the moment, but it was no easy decision as I have become a father of twins last year. For my girlfriend it is not easy to handle them alone, especially at night. But she gave me her ok.
So I decided to give it a try and got on the road Wednesday at 17h from Hannover Germany, which is 800km away from Paris.
my friend Oliver and me arrived at 3 o'clock after midnight in Paris, where we were meeting my old friend Gerhard and his wife at the hotel. Gerhard has seen over 120 shows and it was no problem for me to talk him out of his holiday in Italy for this opportunity. After 3 hours of bad sleep, we got up and checked the radio and the Internet for further information for the secret show. Exactly as I was sitting on the shithouse there was this post on iorr, that told, that virgin megastore will be the sales point. We jumped into the car and Gerhard drove like it was the grand prix of Paris. 12 minutes later arrived at the virgin megastore, where about 60 people were still waiting. (you got my photo of the moment). There was already this system organized by fans going on, the everybody chronological got a number, which prevented later chaos. One hour later a lady from virgin megastore came out on the street and told, that everybody can buy two tickets. But they have to be personalized. So we had four more persons that can come with us. I called my best friend from Berlin, wrote you an email and called two other friends and my father. My friends all said yes, that they wanted to come. My father said no. My friend from London, asked me if I have another ticket for his girlfriend, and I said I will want to wait for your (gazzas) answer until the last minute.
So why me you may asked. Ok, very simple. I'm a stones fan since 1989 when I was eleven years old, trabendo was my 64th show (no I'm not a millionairs son) and I daily check the Internet for stones news since iorr got online. And you are by far the coolest (without kiss ass ( did you say it that way in English.)) stones fan in the whole www. You are a living stones/music encyclopedia, and I almost agree with every post you make. Stones, stones politics, politics, sports or whatever else. You put so much effort in it, help people, no matter how dumb their questions are and this in a very smart and funny way. Sometimes I only read your posts in some topics, or I don't read them until your name pops up. You prove that one can be a hardcore stones fan without being an idiot!!!! So when I had the chance, standing last Thursday morning at the champs ellyssee, I got the strong feeling the I wanted to giveyou something back for all that you have done for stones fans all over the world including myself in the last about 12 years or so.
So I checked every two minutes my email, hoping for your answer.
When I got your mail after the show, I feel really sad, cause I was hoping that someone had the same idea like me and you got into the gig. Sad sad sad. But I haven't seen an other way to contact you.
I haven't read any reviews of the show yet, but I try to write my own little review for you.
Having seen more then half of my stones shows from front row, seen them three times i a club)being a (bad) guitar player by myself, and been sometimes very critical with the stones (especially some 2007 shows and set lists overall), I have to say it was a really great show!
When entering the trabendo I could not belief how small it was. I have seen stones cover bands playing in rooms that where three times bigger. Standing in second row, Keith side, only 1,5 meters away from mick & Keith you could see every fillings of micks teeth my focus was especially on Keith and his playing. How many times it was discussed that he can't play anymore. I think it was discussed in the stones camp, too. And I must admit, that I had some slightly doubts, too.
But he proved all of his critics wrong. I have never seen Keith playing more concentrated then in the trabendor. No posing through the whole show, very focused to make no mistake. He looked & played rustier and a bit slower, but not in a bad way. The last bit of energy was missing, ( I think he will never reach that level of playing like on the bridges/ no security tour again) but I think his whole performance was fantastic in context of playing together with band.
The rest of the band was on fire, too. You only have to watch a fan on YouTube of wtwcd, and you will hear what I mean. Fantastic!!!
The set list was great (longer then I expected - there were rumors that they will only play 3-4 songs)(ok, my dream set list would be completely different, and the songs they played are not the most difficult ones -a bit like a safety net for them), all great songs, performed in a great way. They really don't need more back(up) musicians with maybe bobby as an exception.
Micks show performance makes crowd dancing like crazy, I was completely soaked after the show, great rusty, dirty, sweatty rock'n roll at it's best.
What can I say more, it was not best show I ve ever attended, but one of the best.
So don't believe any negativity about this show, I think they are very capable to deliver some great shows in London and Newark.
So after all a fantastic short trip to france, I'm really happy with the only drop of bitterness, that I couldn't get you into this. Honestly
Hope we make it together next time!
All the best from Germany!
Sebi
