There is, in fact, a government program that will provide low-income people with a free or low cost cell phone.
It was started in 2008 under George W. Bush. The idea (crazy, I know) was that maybe poor people wouldn't
die so much if they could dial 911.



The idea of providing low-income individuals with subsidized phone service was originated in the Reagan
administration following the break-up of AT&T in 1984. (It was expanded and formalized by the
Telecommunications Act of 1996.) Obama's only connection to the program was to overhaul it early
this year to eliminate waste and fraud. That and the fact that fly-by-night companies use his name.


The free phones come from the phone companies themselves, and they'll give them to anyone. Even
vulture capitalists and online bloviators are eligible. The shitty little flip-phone I use was free. When it
finally dies, they'll give me a new one. It's called MARKETING.

None of this stuff is paid for by taxpayers. It's paid for out of the Universal Service Fund, which the feds
levy on telecommunication companies. Of course, THEY might pass the cost along to you, but that ain't
Obama. It's the free market. WHY do you hate the free market, Edith? WHY??
