Andrew Loog Oldham's advice for Stones: Bill Wyman & Mick Taylor reunion, Brian Jones hologram

Rolling Stones
October 5, 2012
By: Carla Hay

Andrew Loog Oldham, who was the Rolling Stones' manager from 1963 to 1967, has revealed what he would advise the Stones to do for their 50th anniversary if he were still the Stones' manager. Oldham says that he would want the Rolling Stones to do a limited-run tour that would include former Rolling Stones bass player Bill Wyman, former Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor and a hologram of the late Brian Jones, the Rolling Stones co-founder/guitarist who died in 1969.

On October 5, 2012, at a Q&A in New York City following a public screening of the Rolling Stones documentary "Charlie Is My Darling - Ireland 1965," Oldham was asked by an audience member what managerial advice he has for the Rolling Stones' 50th anniversary this year.

Oldham replied: "My advice? Try and get Bill Wyman to join you. Get a hologram ... so you can zoom Brian [Jones] in there. Mick Taylor can probably get there himself. Brian, for sure [on the tour]. Right?

"And then go to America, play one album, get comfortable, do the show ... play the cities, do an album for a week. It would be a bit of history, as opposed to, oh you know, 'Here we are. You're in walkers; we're not yet.' I think it could be 'nail it to the floor of America.' Bill and Brian are the essence of it."

During the hour-long Q&A (which was moderated by Steven Van Zandt and took place at the 92nd Street Y), Oldham covered topics that he has already written about in his memoirs or talked about in other interviews. However, he did note that even though Mick Jagger and Keith Richards get more screen time in "Charlie Is My Darling" than the other band members, Oldham thinks that the camera loved drummer Charlie Watts the most. Hence, the title of the movie.

Oldham was a producer of the original "Charlie Is My Darling" film, which has been restored with additional footage that was not in the original 1965 edit of the movie.

The current members of the Rolling Stones (Jagger, Richards, Watts and guitarist Ronnie Wood) reunited with Wyman and Taylor for jam sessions that took place in London in December 2011. The sessions were reportedly filmed for the official Rolling Stones 50th anniversary documentary "Crossfire Hurricane," whose world premiere is at the 2012 London Film Festival on October 18. The Rolling Stones will attend the premiere.

"Crossfire Hurricane" will premiere on TV on networks and dates to be announced. There will also be a limited release of the movie in cinemas sometime in the autumn of 2012. Eagle Rock Entertainment will release "Crossfire Hurricane" on DVD and Blu-ray on a date to be announced.

"Charlie Is My Darling" will also have a TV premiere and limited release in cinemas, on dates to be announced. "The Charlie Is My Darling" soundtrack, DVD, Blu-ray and deluxe box set are set for release by ABKCO on November 6, 2012.

There is also a Rolling Stones 50th anniversary greatest-hits collection titled "GRRR!," which will have two new Rolling Stones studio songs: "Gloom and Doom" and "One Last Shot." ABKCO/Universal Music will release "GRRR!" in the U.S. and Canada on November 13, 2012, and in other countries on November 12, 2012.

They (remaining Stones) should listen to Oldham's advice, but I don't think they will, especially Mick & Keith, A Brian Hologram would really pay tribute to the guy who started this band to begin with, but you think Mick & Keith would listen? they'd probably laugh at it!
