Unless you have inside info Gazza, I don't agree. Mick has always been adamant that the lifeblood of the Stones has been creating new music. I know the output is seriously down but I still suspect they will make records or record songs as long as they physically can. Also, watch the Charlie Rose interview when he says his songwriting partnership with Keith will always endure. I just think that deep deep down (very deep, I know) they love the whole process of getting together and doing it. There are serious personal issues that seemed to have never died between him and Keith and I think Life was a lot more serious than people think, but I think they will eventually call each other up and play in a studio. What I think is dead for sure are the big tours. No surprise for anyone there but I will miss that just as much because it was always incredibly exciting to go to different places around the world and see your favorite band.

No inside info and I'm no Nostradamus, but one album of new material in 15 years from a band who arent a boot in the balls off 70 years of age and dont have any contractual obligation to make new music doesnt suggest much of a creative drive.  Agree with the end of big tours for sure, but in an era where recording and releasing new music appears to be a dying art and the band are driven primarily by money, I cant see them being arsed with it.

I think continued tweaking of old outtakes is a more likely scernario.

Quite a few 'wow' moments in that time - Start Me Up, Undercover, Love is Strong - and a few 'WTF?' ones as well (Emotional Rescue, Streets of Love)

NO SONG PUMPS PERKS UP LIKE EMOTIONAL RESCUE.
THE FUNKIEST AND MOST ORIGINAL THING THEY HAVE EVER DONE !

Dont hate it as much as I used to (musically its excellent), but coming as it did after the Some Girls album which really got me into the Stones, the reaction when first hearing the opening lines of a song which sounded like a cross between the Bee Gees and Mick Jagger having weights tied to his scrotum before being attached to a rocket blasting off from Cape Canaveral was pretty disconcerting and traumatic to say the least.

I'm thinking that this Doom and Gloom had a pretty soft launch. A few Twitter announcements and an email blast and this thing blew up to 2 million hits. For those who watch the NFL - did the Stones announce anything about the video or the new single during their Legend to Legend tie in?

I think I need to focus on just enjoying the fact that it's 2012 and the Stones are releasing two new songs and giving serious signs that there's going to be live gigs. Two new songs is better than nothing, so I'll take it and like it! Charlie's band will soon be hitting a stage!

I am seriously enthralled someone here has my take on their possibilities in the future. Wick, hats off to you. Gazza, The Stones very well may record again as in another album.... why wouldn't they?

They can't just do six or ten shows here and there... sooner or later ...they are not going to be guaranteed this big paycheck as they are getting right now for these.

An album wont do much for selling the concerts at all...but it's something for them to do (at their pace) and they are still showing
interest in recording... after all they got a brand new single out. Sure... it is for a greatest hits but seriously...it was not really needed...

As far as the money foes....guy that is almost a non-issue to them on whether or not they want to get together and do something at this point I am sure. They have millions and millions, an astounding legacy, and..... they are 70 years old..... Charlie wouldn't do this, neither would Mick and Keith if they didn't love it.

They plan on continuing ... just differently... and in Micks words...he and Keith plans on writing together shall endure as long as it's viable. My thought is there will be at least one more album.  They still have an interest in recording together and writing together. It just is not anywhere NEAR as it used to be ....not even in the same ball park to be (there is no argument there from any of us).

However there is solid interest and a want at times (just not as consistent as they used to be) ,,,and that time will hopeffully come once again (provided they are in health and ok shape).

Please tell me your thoughts - (though I am guessing they will be the same as always). Btw...the song from the sound of it seems like if they really hunkered down, they could make another darn good album... (the energy is still there and so is a solid sound).

That was pretty much my feelings towards it too. A big disappointment at the time. But I have grown to appreciate it more and more . As you say Gazza, musically it was excellent but the lyrics and vocal style left me more than a little dumbfounded.  Now I see the inherent humour in that "knight in shining armour/ arab charger" couplet which at first I thought was ridiculous (in a bad way). It was a good as it made me think WTF is going on here, which is what great music does, Getting what you expect is satisying but without a challenge to pre-concieved ideas.

That said, I still see no redeeming features in "Let's Work" despite it considerable "shock value".

Gloom And Doom
by the Rolling Stones

I had a dream last night
That I was piloting a plane
And all the passengers were drunk and insane
I crash landed in a Louisiana swamp
Shot up a horde of zombies
But I come out on top
What's it all about?
It just reflects my mood

Sitting in the dirt
Feeling kind of hurt
Aaaaall I hear is doooom and gloom
And aaaaall is darkness in my room
Through the light your face I see
Baby take a chance
Baby won't you dance with meeeeee

Lost all that treasure in an overseas war
It just goes to show you don't get what you paid for
Battle to the rich and you worry about the poor
Put my feet up on the couch
And lock all the doors
Hear a funky noise
That's the tightening of the screeeeews

I'm feeling kind of hurt
Sitting in the dirt
Aaaaall I hear is doooom and gloom
But when those drums go boom boom boom
Through the night your face I see
Baby take a chance
Baby won't you dance with meeee
Yeah
Baby won't you dance with meeee
Oh yeah

Fracking deep for...
But there's nothing in the sump
There's kids all picking
Ar the garbage dump
I'm running out of water
So I better prime the pump
I'm trying to stay sober
But I end up drunk

We'll be eating dirt
Living on the side of the roooaaad
There's some food for thought
Kind of makes your head explode
Feeling kind of hurt
Yeah

But aaaall I hear is doooom and gloom
And aaaaall is darkness in my room
Through the night your face I see
Baby come on
Baby won't you dance with me
Yeah
Yeah
Baby won't you dance with me
I'm feeling kind of hurt
Baby won't you dance with meeeee
Yeah
Come on
Baby won't you dance with me
I'm sitting in the dirt
Baby won't you dance with me!

If Mick Jagger is healthy enough to go out and perform, and do other things, I simply can't see him continuously tweaking out-takes from other albums from thirty years ago in keeping his attention.

Amazed he's done it once, and then again...especially almost back to back. This alone, at every juncture with The Stones from here on out will never keep his interest. He will have to do something eles. If he is going to go into the studio again with The Stones, for the next time anyway, I am sure it will be to work on new material ...not tread water from old albums from past decades. Definitely not the Mick Jagger we know.

Not saying they won't try that again, but next time I am sure Mick would want to do something fresh if The Stones are to record. After the documentary, greatest hits, Exile, and Some Girls re-issue not to mention a book and a set of special anniversary shows I am sure if he hooks up, or continues with The Stones he will want something fresh and new. Mick isn't in to working on projects concerning the past anyway ...for the most part. All of us were very surprised he revisited two albums. He always wants to do something new (so long as he still can).  Going into the studio to revisit another previous album from their past the next Stones project will never cut it with him. IF that is to occur once again right away... it will be very evident that they finally lost all interest in recording fresh material together and I don't think that is the case.

"We'll be eating dirt, Living on the side of the road' is party-ly a reference to "There's some lovely filth down here" in MP & the Holy Grail, shirley. Swamp Castle and so on.
Ok, probably not, but there's some blooming marvellous stuff in the hairy-air, if I'm not Miss Shaken.
Mr Richards considered a career in plumbing apparently and the saucy Stains certainly seem to be plumbing the heights at the mo.
