"pono" means "i put" in Latin.

either that or it's the lead singer of U2 with a cold.

Didn't know whether to put this in the Dylan thread or the Neil thread; settled for the "pono" thread:

Neil Young upgrading sound of classic Bob Dylan albums for new 'Pono' device

...

Neil Young has been upgrading the sound of classic Bob Dylan albums for a new device he's help develop called a "Pono."

While appearing on The Late Show With David Letterman last Thursday, Young discussed a variety of subjects, including his stake in Lionel Trains, his LincVolt car, a new memoir (Waging Heavy Peace), and last weekend's concert in Central Park with Crazy Horse.

He also brought a new hand-held, pyramid-shaped, iPod-like device, which, according to Young, has superior sound. It's called a "Pono," which Young explained is Hawaiian for "righteous." (Pono rhymes with Ono, as in Yoko.) Young pulled out a "working prototype" from his jacket pocket.

Young has been criticizing mp3 and other inferior audio formats for years, because he believes "sound matters," and music suffers when heard through below par audio systems. He told Letterman the Pono "plays back master files ... the best sound anybody can get .... This is what they get in the studio, the highest resolution ... "

Then Neil dropped this bombshell:

"Tomorrow we're in the studio. We're transferring Highway 61 Revisited from the original tapes, and Freewheelin' from the original tapes... of Bob Dylan classics. And we're negotiating with Sony (which owns Columbia Records, Dylan's label) so that we can put all these things out."
Young goes into more detail in the embedded clip at the left.

The friendship of Dylan and Young goes way back. They have shared the same stage numerous times. Dylan name checked Young in his song "Highlands," while Young quoted Dylan in 2003's "Bandit," and a new song, "Twisted Road," from the upcoming Psychedelic Pill album. He has also "borrowed" Dylan's melodies more than once.

Thanks to "Thrasher" at Neil Young fan site Thrasher's Wheat for the head's up.
