They can 'categorise' themselves whatever they want, Ian. The evidence suggests otherwise. Just because Keith Richards makes some media friendly soundbite doesn't mean that it automatically deserves to be taken at face value, ya know...

They like to categorise themselves on the same level as old blues musicians as well, as if they're 'carrying the torch'.

The reality is that playing shows where they're asking people to pay almost a weeks' salary to share the experience and where they're keeping the best seats for millionaires who are willing (and dumb) enough to pay four figure sums to listen to shows that have pretty much no blues content at all (as most of said target audience demographic wouldn't be able to appreciate it). Can someone show me the 'connection' to the musicians who inspired them there, because maybe I've missed it!

Good question indeed. They commanded 25 million dollars for four shows? ..that's over a million dollars a piece per show.. How is this promoter going to cover that? I realize it is The Stones, and it is a very long awaited appearance with much anticipation but still?

My hope is they do not move into a Barbara Streisand type situation soon where the only way to see them is this kina scenario with 500.00 tickets for a few shows here or there. I hope this is more-less a "special event" type of thing, which commands such a high price tag.

Still not sure how they can cover four shows, not in stadiums, mind you... at 25 million...? That's MUCH... in every sense of the word.

It's over $6 million apiece, not $4 million

Thats the reported story. It may or may not be the case.  After all, the showbiz411.com guy who posted the info is still insisting his dates are correct - seemingly oblivious to the fact that of the four dates he provided, the venues are unavailable on two of them.

The four shows would be seen by no more than 80,000 people.

That doesnt translate into $25 million for me - especially taking into account that two of the gigs are in the UK, and whilst London is the most expensive Stones ticket in Europe, its still a long way short at the prices they will charge in the US and especially in places like New York (Top 2007 ticket price in the UK last tour - £150, which is about $250. They were charging $450 in the US. The Stones would be publicly disembowelled if they asked the majority of their audience in the UK to pay £300 for a ticket)

The Stones average gross on the ABB tour was about $4 million per show - but a high % of those shows were in stadiums.

The figure doesnt really add up for me unless there's some media spin-off like TV rights etc (and I dont think they'll televise these shows as its too high a risk for a band who have been so inactive). The only other thing I can think of is that Richard Branson's involvement (he has no previous track record as a promoter, unlike Paul Dainty who is co-promoting these shows) would suggest  he's putting up a lot of his own money to enable him to get a foothold in the business.

Legend to Legend: ESPN to Commemorate The Rolling Stones' 50th Anniversary on Monday Nights

Sixteen Classic Tracks to be part of ESPN's Monday Night Football Coverage This Fall And Debut Sept 10.

ESPN will commemorate the Greatest Rock'n'Roll Band In The World, The Rolling Stones' 50th Anniversary on Monday nights throughout the National Football League season this fall with "Legend to Legend", a unique collaboration with the Universal Music Group that will combine Monday Night Football highlights with classic tracks from the legendary band featuring Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood.
ESPN is licensing 16 Rolling Stones tracks, spanning the early 1970's release of Exile on Main St. through the mid 2000's A Bigger Bang. The songs will be a mix of popular hits and deep cuts, including "It's Only Rock'n Roll", "Hot Stuff" and "One Hit (To the Body)". Four different songs will be selected per month and will be used for four weeks at a time on ESPN's Monday Night Countdown pregame show (6:30 p.m. ET), on bumpers and teases within the Monday Night Football game (8:30 p.m.), and in a post-MNF game highlight segment on SportsCenter, ESPN's flagship highlights, news and information show.

"Legend to Legend" will debut Monday, Sept. 10 when ESPN kicks off the 43rd season of Monday Night Football with two games at a special time: Cincinnati Bengals vs. Baltimore Ravens (7 p.m.) and San Diego Chargers vs. Oakland Raiders (10:15 p.m.). Countdown begins at 5 p.m. The schedule continues throughout ESPN's 16-week NFL schedule, which concludes on Saturday, Dec. 22.

______________________________________

When did I say it was 4 million per show? I said it's over a million a show a piece meaning for each band member... 1.5 roughly...  (what the fuk do I have to do here to convince you to see things my way Gazza.... Cheesy)

In seriousness, I think your spot-on... I think their promoter is putting himself at a loss in some way in order to make a name for himself (and I can't think of a better way to do it then by promoting a Stones anniversary special set of shows).

On another note... WHEN are we supposed to officially hear about this? I mean...it IS September and supposedly these gigs are basically in two short months?? You'd of thought they would of announced the special set of shows by now?

On another note... I disagree that they are going to be touring or doing more shows in a relative short amount of time after this. I can't see them touring in the late winter or early spring. Why? I just think this is kind of it after these shows, the movie, the book ...etc.... (for their anniversary)...then that's it. Now...if if they do something next year I think it'll later in the year, and for different reasons and not related to these. I am not seeing any type of carry-over. Why? because it's being touted as this year (see ESPN's latest...that's for this season in 2012 in celebration of their 50th...as the latest example). I don't see em trying to sell this thing into next year as I told you. But we agree to disagree. I also admit, I see where your comin from and you have a worthy argument.

*Not to go around and around about it but I just think your underestimating and really missing the concept that... in fact... the party for this anniversary thing is this year....2012 ... a one year thing. There is action, it's labled, and that's the way it is planned at this point. The media and public are becoming pretty aware of it. Not to go around and around but it's becoming more evident by the day... (especially with the latest ESPN celebration) its a one run through thing and its happening in the fall of 2012.

(now now... unless you have some more of that good inside info you get that says completely otherwise ... come on now mate... spill it out!! naaahhhh I know you must and should keep it quiet and hold honor... hehe)

"Mid September" was what I was led to believe.  So - maybe next week if that story is accurate.

I dont see that theres any great urgency. We're only talking about two shows and 35-40,000 tickets per continent, after all.

As it's already Sept. 10th today temperature is rising.
I'm really looking forward. But to be honest, I just can't imagine Keith goin' properly through a 2 hours show.
Hope they prove me wrong.

Oh yes certainly...those shows will sell out in hours...very easy. No need to even market/promote it to sell them out pretty darn quickly, really.

Actually, what I was meaning is that I thought it would be more a planned big event with some media focus as a special set of shows commemorating their 50th... and with that... I figured they would of announced it a solid while before hand in order to kina to build it up  ... that's all.  After all... it is a pretty special show (I am ..GUESSING???  Undecided.... geez didn't hear anything eles about it yet?)

I think its more a case of seeing how these shows go first before they commit to anything on a larger scale. If, for the sake of argument, they turn out badly and Keith's clearly not up to it, then I cant imagine Mick (or the rest of the band) wanting to tarnish their reputation by signing up for a lengthy spell of touring.

Earlier in the year, Keith publicly stated that the band would not perform in 2012. That was before they got together in the spring - it wasnt really until Mick said in July that they would do shows before the end of the year that it seemed possible. Must admit I was skeptical myself as it just sounded like an off the cuff comment to shut up a few journalists, but I guess he saw enough signs of hope when they played together to think that it was doable.

This small number of shows strikes me as more of a trial run than anything else. And without wishing to sound over-dramatic, how they go could very well decide the future of the Stones as a performing entity.

Worked out around $4 million per show.  $558 million gross - 147 shows. I suppose you could remove the two Beacon shows from that list and probably the Robin Hood Foundation benefit at Radio City Music Hall.

This comes from a GRRRRRRRRRReek website  (sorry, couldnt resist!) - hence the "loose" translation.

An interview with Chuck Leavell. Interestingly, "One Last Shot" is one that Keith brought in.

Are you participating in the new Rolling Stones songs “Gloom and Doom” and “One Last Shot”, which will be released in November?

Yes, I’m very excited about the songs which will be released about the anniversary of 50 years in November.  We were in Paris to record them. Keith brought the song “One Last Shot”, which has a really great title and with this I think about how we could have another shot. We had a great fun during the recordings, we were all together, very close, and we all had some joy during the process. We will see if the men will decide to some other activity. Right now, there is no announcement to be made. But, I ‘m certainly hopeful to be able to do some other activity. More than it is.

Full interview is here : http://www.hit-channel.com/chuck-leavell-solothe-rolling-stonesthe-allman-brothe...
